A Note from the Principal

As Term 2 draws to an end, I would like to thank our wonderful school community for being so supportive and positive as we navigated our way through COVID–19 territory. Throughout this time, we have listened to your feedback about what has worked and what you really want to stay as we progress through the remainder of the school year. I will provide an Update before the end of the week to outline how Butler Primary School will be progressing into Term 3.

Throughout this term, I have been extremely lucky to have shared many wonderful interactions with our K to 2 students and families before and after school, and when one of those ‘sensational’ moments occur it makes me stop and think about how lucky I am to be the Principal of Butler Primary School.

Many of us express gratitude by saying ‘thank you’ to someone who has helped us or recognised us in some other way. Gratitude is not just an action: it is also a positive emotion that produces longer lasting positivity.

Gratitude is an emotion, a virtue, a moral sentiment, a motive, a copying response, a skill, and an attitude. It is important to realise that showing gratitude is much more than a simple’ thanks’ without further thought. Practicing gratitude daily goes a long way to improving your happiness in all areas of your life. Gratitude opens the door to building positive relationships, improves physical and psychological health, enhances empathy and reduces aggression, helps with sleep and improves self-esteem.

We live in such a busy world. Sometimes we need to take stock and ‘smell the roses’ as they say and be thankful. Remember to let the people in your life know just how much you appreciate them and savour the small things in life. Say thank you a lot because when it comes to gratitude, you really can’t overdo it.

I am very fortunate to get to see a large proportion of students in a variety of settings. I continue to be impressed with the respectful nature the vast majority of students demonstrate on a daily basis.

I also get to see the professionalism of our staff, who do such a great job in educating our students. When I say ‘staff’ I refer to teachers and support staff. At the moment, it is especially busy and all have earned a well-deserved break.

I would like to wish all staff, students and their families a happy and safe break.

Reports

COVID-19 has presented us with extraordinary challenges throughout Semester One of 2020 which has meant our teaching and learning programs have looked different and our assessment tasks have had to be modified. For this reason, the information you will be given about your child/children’s progress at the end of term two will look different.

Your child’s report will not provide the same information that you would have previously received. This report will not include any A to E grades and there will be no attendance information. The depth and breadth of curriculum covered throughout this period has changed due to the many adaptations that have been made to accommodate students accessing on line learning, face to face teaching and printed materials. For these reasons you will not be provided information on every learning area. Reports will be emailed on Wednesday 1 July 2020.

What’s On In

Year 2

Hooked on Writing

This term in Year 2, we have been having a fantastic time with our Talk for Writing lessons. We have been so clever, studying Information Reports and learning a lot about emus. On Tuesday of Week 7, we got a surprise when some of the teachers found some strange green eggs in the garden at school. We had a good look at them and discussed what kind of animal we thought these eggs could belong to. After some think-pair-shares and brainstorming we tried to figure out what could possibly be growing in the egg. Some theories were dinosaurs, rabbits, emus, lizards, scorpions, turtles, aliens, snakes, chickens, ducks and even chocolate.

From this, the students were hooked into learning all about what was in the egg. We have integrated this with our Design and Technology lessons so the students have enjoyed various lessons on informational report writing and creating and designing.

Languages – Indonesian

In Kindy, we have introduced the ‘Early Languages Learning Australia’ (ELLA) program. The students are enjoying learning Indonesian with the help of Talo and his Polyglot friends. A Polyglot is someone who can speak many different languages. Look at our paintings of Talo!

This is Butler Primary School’s second year being involved in the national ELLA F-2 Schools trial. The Pre-Primary’s have learnt lots of new Indonesian words. This term we have been learning Indonesian greetings, numbers and songs. We also learnt how to say ‘Saya suka’ (I like) and ‘Saya tidak suka’ (I don’t like) in Indonesian. It was Bagus!

Library

Thank you everyone for your support throughout this term.

Overdue Books

Unfortunately, we have over $850.00 in overdue books. Students who have overdues, have had invoices sent home asking for payment of the replacement cost of these books. Please help us by ensuring your child returns his or her Library book on the due date. This will ensure that they will be able to continue their borrowing and will keep our Library collection up to date.

Book Club Orders

Book Club Issue 4 has been processed and orders will be delivered to classes as soon as they arrive.

End of Term Arrangements

The last week of borrowing for students will be next week, Week 9.

All students must return their books to the Library by Wednesday the 1st of July.

School Parking Information

To help ease congestion around the school during peak times we encourage families to walk their children to and from school wherever possible, especially in fine weather or park at the Community Centre car park and walk your children across the oval.

All Staff park at the front of the school which frees up all the bays in the public car park off Camborne Way.

Families are reminded that parking is not permitted on grassed kerbside areas around the Pre-primary car park and along Tollesbury Avenue, as well as the bricked median strip in Camborne Parkway or across any footpaths. Parking is also not permitted in bus bays. Please consider the safety of all other road users and pedestrians when parking and leaving schools grounds.

Please also give consideration and respect to owners of properties surrounding the school and do not park on their properties or verges without the permission of the homeowner.

All usual road and parking rules apply around the school and parking fines are issued by rangers (who visit the school frequently) to those not adhering to the road rules. We encourage you to obey all parking and road rules for the safety of all families.
