A Note from the Principal

In today’s world, the stressors of daily life can cause children and adults alike to feel frustrated, overwhelmed and anxious. To build calm classrooms staff are utilising practical mindfulness-based tools to help our students manage stress and achieve emotional well-being throughout the day by activating the body’s relaxation response. When we’re feeling focused, relaxed and energised, we are empowered.
Our approach to building and embedding calm classrooms provides our students with a positive proactive approach to addressing both the energy and stressful anxiety that they may encounter.
During times when emotions are heightened by students, breathing techniques can be effective in calming down situations and, as a result, the learning environment has a higher level of student engagement.
Mindful awareness practices improve executive functioning, which includes working memory, emotion regulation, and self-monitoring. Research shows that participation in a program that utilises some mindfulness techniques leads to improvements in behavioural regulation and overall executive functioning in students.
Daily practice of relaxation response techniques and self-care strategies like the our 5 3 1 (5 minutes of mindfulness, 3 acknowledgements of gratitude and 1 act of kindness) can lead to improved positive academic and behavioural outcomes. One study found that middle primary school students who were exposed to two or more semesters of classes that included these practices demonstrated better work habits and higher cooperation amongst students than those who had less exposure. Similar studies have shown significant increases in self-esteem, greater improvements in levels of perceived stress and anxiety, as well as an increase in health-promoting behaviours.
As we go about our everyday life, germs accumulate on our hands. When children come into contact with germs, they can become infected just by touching their eyes, nose, or mouth. And once they're infected, it's usually just a matter of time before the whole family comes down with the same illness.
We recognise the importance of children washing their hands whilst they are at school and in-order to promote good hygiene Butler Primary School continually reviews our approach. To minimise the misuse of soap in the toilets and to address the numerous allergies that can affect children, the use of waterless hand rub has been the accepted practice at our school. All children have access to an alcohol-based hand rub (hand sanitiser) throughout the day and this is considered a good way to clean your hands if you don't have access to soap and water.
Feedback from our school community has highlighted a couple of gaps in our practice and to address these gaps we are going to trial a ‘hygiene bag’ initiative. Each child will bring their own personal hygiene bag which gives parents the opportunity to address allergies and select the most appropriate soap for their child. Hygiene bags will be kept in the child’s school bag so that they have access to it at all times throughout the day. It will be up to each parent to determine what specific items are placed in the child’s hygiene bag and throughout the term parents will need to monitor if items require replacement. Hygiene bags usually include soap which may be in a liquid form or a bar, sunscreen and hand sanitiser.
We look forward to your support in this matter and will monitor the initiative for the remainder of term 1 and term 2.

Class Assemblies in Review
On Thursday, 20th February Room 2 hosted the assembly. The theme was based on the “5-3-1” concept that we have been applying at Butler Primary School. This means that we try to practise 5 minutes of mindfulness, 3 thoughts of gratitude and at least 1 act of kindness each day. We are participating in “Smiling Mind” every day to help us be calm, focussed and ready to learn. Some of the students shared some of the things which they were thankful for, and everyone’s thankfulness paintings were displayed. We sang the “Kindness” song to show different ways that we can be kind and threw “kindness” cards into the audience at the end. We have found that practising the 5-3-1 makes us feel happier. I am very proud how all of the students learnt their lines and the song in less than two weeks. Well done Room 2!
