A Note from the Principal

It’s amazing to see that the end of the 2019 school year is coming to a close. I want to thank you all for all the support and patience shown throughout the year. We have had successes and some challenges, yet despite all, we continued the work that had to be done. Together we’ve learned much and shared many experiences.
Special thanks to all of you who have contributed in ways small, large and unimaginable! So many of you have supported our work in countless ways and contributed to the P&C to provide additional resources to do what we dream and know is good for children. Thanks for getting your children to school on time each day, for kind notes of encouragement that mean so much, for sending your kids with healthy lunches obviously packed with love, for making sure homework gets done… and handed in. Thank you for providing rich and engaging, well-rounded experiences for your children and knowing that education is about joy, wonder and fostering curiosity, along with the development of social skills so needed to succeed. For these, and a million other things, the Staff at Butler are truly grateful.
To those of you who are leaving us for new places and adventures, we wish you all the best. Congratulations to our Year 6 students who are venturing onto a new stage in their academic career!
And, best-wishes, albeit with saddened hearts, to Mrs Anne-Marie DeCampo, Mrs Pauline Evans, Mrs Kerry Buhner, Mrs Colleen Hurt, Mrs Lorreen Brand, Mr Callum Hawes, Mr Scott Riley, Ms Nerine Botma, Mrs Wendy Clements, Mrs Danielle Martin, Miss Candice Mastaglia, Mrs Amy Shanley, Ms Sarah Cotter, Ms Kagumi Parasya and Ms Lauren McQuillan as they move to embrace new challenges. Butler Primary School has been extremely lucky to have had such outstanding professionals as part of our team and with the exception of Mrs Martin and Ms McQuillan, who will be welcoming new additions to their families, they will undoubtedly be a great asset to their new schools.
To quote Dr Seuss ‘Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory’. We hope that the students and staff farewelling our school look back fondly on the many moments that turned into memories at Butler Primary School.
As we farewell some of our staff we will also be welcoming Ms Gemma Parker, Ms Rachel Strickland and Ms Rebecca Carey to Butler Primary School in 2020.
Student reports will be sent home on Tuesday 17th December and class lists for 2020 will be displayed on Wednesday 18th December. The class lists are subject to change depending on any variations in enrolments.
2019 has been a year full of surprises and many changes. Our commitment to continuous improvement has helped us to remain focused on the things that are important. We have reviewed many of our programs including spelling, mathematics, writing and our approach to positive behaviours. We have worked hard to embed our school values (respect, responsibility, integrity, community and aspire) in everything that we do.
On behalf of the staff I would like to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a terrific New Year. Stay safe and healthy and we look forward to welcoming everyone back at the beginning of 2020.
Mrs Julie Woodhouse
Principal

Jump Rope for Heart Jump Off Day
On Wednesday, 27 of November the basketball court was rocking for the Jump Rope for Heart Jump Off Day for Years PP-3!
The day was a celebration of all the hard work the students have been doing with their skipping for Term 3 and an opportunity to raise some money for the Heart Foundation.
Each year level had a 50 minute session to display their skills to parents and teachers by rotating through four activity stations. Years PP-1 enjoyed wiggly snake skipping, long rope run through, single rope free skipping and a skipping relay. Years 2-3 enjoyed partner skipping, long rope skipping, single rope free skipping with skills cards, and endurance skipping testing who can skip for the longest without stopping.
The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience with music and prizes rewarded for resilience and effort. Thank you to the teachers and parents who assisted and supported the event and to all the students who donated.
Look forward to a bigger and better event in 2020!

ECU Old Ways New Ways Project
In Term 3 Jason Barrow and Carolyn Bishop from ECU shared some traditional knowledge with our students involved in the ECU Old Ways New Ways Project. Students were taught how to throw a Kylie (Noongar name for Boomerang). Students learnt that there were two types of kylie, with one used for distracting the animals and one used for hunting. The hunting kylie does not come back!
Jason also showed us how to build a Mia Mia – a shelter that Noongar people used to make a long time ago. We learnt how to create the frame, made rope and used leaves from the Balga tree to make the roof and floor. We also learnt the science behind why the shelter is shaped as a dome, and where to build a Mia Mia so it doesn’t blow down.
For the final session of this project students were invited to ECU Joondalup to see where Jason and Caroline worked. The students participated in a smoking ceremony and then received a certificate and gift for completing the project. Jason and Caroline then took us all on a tour of the campus and spoilt us with a delicious morning tea.
The students involved in the Old Ways-New Ways project displayed leadership, cooperation, team work and friendship during our sessions.
We would like to sincerely thank Jason Barrow and Caroline Bishop for sharing their vast knowledge of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and culture. The students and teachers involved have thoroughly enjoyed each session and learnt a lot.

Pre-Kindy
We have had a wonderful time at Pre Kindy this year. The children have interacted with new friends and some cute animal visitors. The children and their parents and caregivers have enjoyed exploring the outside environment. The children have practised lots of fine motor activities and had fun with number and shape games, construction activities and dramatic play. Story time was enjoyed by all as each week “Albie”, the puppet, would introduce the story theme to the children.
Pre Kindy will be running again in 2020. If you would like to join us every second Wednesday next year please contact the school office.
Mrs Alison Johnston
Kindy Teacher

Colour Explosion Fun Run
Students had a great time at the Colour Fun Run this year, despite having to wait a little longer for the weather to cool down! Thank you very much to all the families who supported this event through fundraising for the school, helping the P&C organise the event and for those who even participated! A very big thank you to the P&C for all your efforts in organising this fantastic event for the students and the school.

Class Assemblies in Review
PP1 – 7 November 2019
On Thursday, 7 November PP1 hosted the assembly. The theme was “Addition” and we demonstrated how to follow the Big Maths addition steps 1 to 8. We sang The Friends of 10 song and some of us dressed up as party guests and super heroes to attend the number 10’s birthday party as her “friends” (the number bonds to 10). We then solved some number stories with the pirates using giant props. We worked hard on learning our lines and the song lyrics. We had lots of fun and were very proud of ourselves.

PP2 Assembly – 21 November 2019
On Thursday, 21 November PP2 were delighted to perform their assembly based on community helpers. Across the term we have been learning about people we see every day who have important jobs in our community. Each of the students got to dress up as what they want to be when they grow up. We had firemen, police, teachers and even a McDonalds worker. It was wonderful to see everyone making such an effort with their costume. The students looked incredible. For the performance the students recited a poem they had learnt in class about what some community helpers do in their jobs. Then we sang a song about growing up and what fun it can be. Esmai wanted to be a principal when she grows up and she even got to help Mrs Woodhouse hand out certificates. The students of PP2 worked very hard to learn their lines put on a wonderful performance. They all spoke clearly into the microphone and sang with expression and enthusiasm.
I am very proud of each and every one of them. Well done PP2.

PP3 – 28 November 2019
On Thursday, 28 November PP3 were very excited to put on their very first assembly. We spent some time memorising our lines and on the day we did a very good job of speaking into the microphone. We started our assembly by telling the audience everything we have learned this year. Then we sung an ABC Rap and the 3 Bears Rap, followed by Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer and We Wish you a Merry Christmas. As Mrs Bryan said, “It was cuteness overload!” Some of the parents even cried happy tears. We hope you all have a happy holiday break.
Best Wishes from PP3.

Whats On In…
Visual Art
Junior Art Students
Students in Pre-Primary have been learning about Community for HASS, so in Art we've been making paper collages of ambulances and doctors. We've enjoyed drawing, cutting, pasting and colouring our collages!
In Year 1, we've been creating Treasure Maps, which ties in to the students' studies in Geography. We loved the adventure of creating an island full of misty rainforests, deep lakes and lost treasure!
Students in Year 2 have been studying 'People Are Connected to Many Places' in HASS, and as summer approaches, we've created a beautiful painted background of the beach and the ocean, and pasted on a colourful pair of thongs. Thongs come in handy when the sand is so hot!

Mr Radford
Visual Art Teacher, PP-Yr2
Senior Art Students
2019 has been another busy and exciting year in the art room. We have seen the emergence of many talented artists across years 3-6. I am extremely proud of the enthusiasm, energy, effort and achievements of all the students in my classes this year. They have also demonstrated great team work! Well done, everyone.
We have continued to explore various art elements and principles including; weaving, print making, one- point perspective drawing, 3D paper sculptures, 3D drawing and shading, mask making, wire flower garden and Pop Art to name a few. The students also enjoyed learning about the artworks of Keith Haring, Andy Warhol and Claude Monet to inspire them to create their own artworks.
The students have consolidated on skills they already know, as well as acquire new ones, which are reflected in the examples shown.
I look forward to beautifying our school again next year and wish the Year 6 students all the best. I hope they enjoy and embrace every opportunity available to them in the Visual Art department at their respective high schools!!
Happy and safe holidays everyone!!
Ms. Carolyn Banfield
Visual Art Teacher, Yr3 – 6

Year 6
Year 6, 2019 in review.
For our Year Six students, 2019 has been a busy and exciting year. Starting from Term One, they participated in their first Summer Carnivals against local schools in the sports of cricket, basketball, lacrosse and tee-ball. The Year Sixes represented Butler incredibly well and our basketball team were so successful that they were invited to participate in the 2019 Champions Cup. In Term Two, they continued their sporting success at the Winter Carnivals, participating in football, soccer and netball. But the highlight of the year for many was the Year Six camp. Students attended a three day camp at Kerem Adventure Camp in Bullsbrook. They were able to experience some of the amazing activities on offer such as glow sports, the high ropes course, archery, orienteering, disc golf and many more. As teachers, we were so proud of their attitude and behaviour on camp and it was an amazing experience for us and the students. Now we are looking forward. Graduation and the Maze excursion will soon be here and our sixes are well into their transition to high school. We hope they enjoy the rest of their time at Butler Primary School and all the adventures that are ahead of them.
Mrs Jones, Mr Malins, Mrs Bruce, Mrs Martin and Mrs
Hurt.
