A Note from the Principal

Welcome back to students, families, staff and friends of Butler Primary School for the final term of the year. I hope you had an opportunity during the holidays to rest and replenish energy for the remaining weeks of the 2019 school year.
I would like to extend a very warm welcome to our Edith Cowan University pre-service students who will be completing their practicums with us. On behalf of all the staff and students I hope their time with us is both productive and enjoyable.
During holiday times we all have the opportunity to develop an appreciation for an improved quality of sleep and as I reflected on this I realised that in such a busy world the importance of sleep can be overlooked for both children and adults.
Sleep quality and quantity is an important consideration for all our students. The amount of quality sleep influences a learner’s readiness and good humour to embrace all that the school day has to offer. Recent research from Harvard University suggests that regulated bedtimes and wake times equates with better achievement in comparison with students whose sleep patterns are irregular. Arianna Huffington (How to succeed- Get more Sleep. Ted Talk) also advocates the importance of sleep and screen free time.
TIPS FOR IMPROVING CHILDREN’S SLEEP HABITS
- Restricting use of electronic devices in the hour before bed. The blue light emitted by some electronic devices stops the production of melatonin (the hormone associated with sleepiness). The stimulation of using electronic devices for games etc may also make it harder for children to ‘switch off’.
- Consistency in daily bedtime routines will help associate set behaviours with sleep.
- Consistency in times for going to bed and getting up – including on weekends as well as on week days – will help regulate body clocks.

Nusantara Festival
On Sunday, 15 September, Butler Primary School was very fortunate to host the Perth Nusantara Indonesian Festival. It was a celebration organised by Balai Bahasa Indonesia Perth (BBIP) and the Westralian Indonesian Language Teachers Association (WILTA) to introduce Indonesian language and culture to the local community.
Supported by the City of Wanneroo, the event featured the music of Indonesian Idol, Michael J and V1MAST, collaborations with our Butler Primary School students, Indonesian food, activities and market stalls. It was a great success and a fun day out for the whole family.
Our choir did a wonderful job learning and singing ‘Kicir Kicir’ and our new Indonesian Dance Club performed the ‘Tari Piring’ for the first time. The ‘Michael J School Concerts in Oz’ workshops added great value to our Indonesian program and also gave our Year 5 and 6 students a chance to get involved.
Terima kasih to all the students, staff and families involved.

Indonesian Dance Club Performance
The Indonesian Consulate General was so impressed with the skills of our Indonesian Dance Club at the Nusantara Festival, that she invited them to represent Western Australian Schools learning Indonesian at a special Gala Dinner event held last week. The event commemorated Indonesia's 74th Anniversary of Independence Day and celebrated 70 years of Diplomatic Relations between Australia and Indonesia.
Students from Years 2, 3 & 4 in the Dance Club performed the ‘Tari Piring’, a traditional Indonesian plate dance from West Sumatra. It was a great honour to represent WA schools and we were extremely proud of the students’ dance skills, the way they conducted themselves and their courage to dance on such a big stage in front of Government officials and very important guests. They gave up many lunchtimes to practice and they did an amazing job representing Butler Primary School.

New Playground – The Orb!
Butler Primary School recently received funding for a new playground and it was installed during the last holidays. The playground is currently available to year 2 to 4 students who are having a great time challenging themselves on the Orb.

Undercover Area Upgrade.
Have you seen the new flooring in the undercover area? It looks amazing. Thank you very much to the P&C for providing the funding for the new floor and the wider school community for supporting the fundraising initiatives of the P&C.

Maths Week 2019
We have had another amazing week of education and fun at Butler Primary School. During Week 2 of this term, the students and staff celebrated all things Mathematics for Maths Week 2019. The students had a week full of interesting and engaging Maths activities that involved the whole school. The students started the week with a giant times tables chant in the undercover area which showcased their excellent knowledge of a specific times table for each year group. Daily problem solving challenges were happening every morning before school in all block wet areas. A take home Maths challenge for families to complete together was sent home whilst an in class tessellation challenge amongst the year levels was occurring in the classrooms. Each year level organised a Maths tabloids activity and throughout the week a UNO challenge for Years 1-3 as well as a Numero Challenge for the Years 4-6 was being conducted. The students and teachers all had an amazing week learning new Maths skills.

Early Childhood Play Area
Due to an increase in negative behaviour, unsupervised children and some injuries we need to remind you that the Early Childhood playground is not open before or after school.
Could we please ask that you support us by collecting your children from their classrooms and respect our school policy of no playing.
Fortunately, we are surrounded by some lovely parks so we encourage you, in this lovely weather, to utilise those.
We thank you in anticipation and hope you understand how much we value your child’s safety.

Class Assemblies in Review
Room 16 Assembly – 12 September 2019
On Thursday, 12 September, Room 16 were delighted to perform their assembly based on Indonesian culture, as Butler Primary school was hosting an Indonesia Festival on the following Sunday. The students of Room 16 performed a play where a family was sent on a surprise holiday through Indonesia. They learnt about the Indonesian language, food, sports, dance, animals and physical features. In preparation for their assembly, the students of Room 16 also created artwork including masks and puppets to place on display. The students worked hard to all learn their lines and spoke with great clarity and expression into the microphone.
Congratulations on a brilliant assembly Room 16!

Kindy
Farm Term at Kindy
Third term was an exciting one at Kindy. We began the term exploring the Talk for Writing text of “The Little Red Hen”. Several hens and chickens came to visit. The children grew their own wheat just like the Little Red Hen did. Later in the term, the children were hooked into the story of “Mrs Wishy Washy” with the strange appearance of muddy footprints all through the classrooms. Was it the visiting calf, the ducklings or maybe those cute lambs who made the muddy mess? Farm term inspired us to enquire about the world around us, practise number and literacy skills and enjoy caring for friendly baby animals.
Mrs Alison Johnston
Classroom Teacher

PP6

The children in Kindy PP6 have enjoyed being with the farmyard animals throughout Term 3. We would like to say a great big thank you to Mrs Johnston for bringing a calf, lambs, dogs, ducks, hens and chickens, to Butler Primary School. We all had so much fun together.

Year 5
Classy Café
Over Term 3, the Year 5 students completed studies in Business and Economics and Technology: Food and Hygiene. The students created their own business called Classy Café and developed a logo and mission statement for their business. Over the course of the term they looked at how they could optimise their profit, what would make their cafe stand out from their competitors and researched food and hygiene practises that their restaurants needed to follow. The students then had the opportunity to put their learning into a real life scenario when the Classy Café was open for business on Thursday 26th September. Parents and family members came to come dine in the restaurant and were thrilled to have their child serve them amazing food. It was an absolute success and the students had an amazing time.

Planet Shark Excursion
On Monday, 23 September, the Year 5 students excitedly visited the WA Maritime Museum. The focus of the day was to explore the Planet Shark Exhibition and watch an interactive show all about sharks. Some students were lucky enough to be chosen to take part in the show and even had the chance to dress up as a shark or a fisherman. A lot of fun facts were learned and the students were surprised that 12 000 sharks are killed per hour and how sharks have adapted to their environment through physical adaptations. The Planet Shark Exhibition showcased the teeth of sharks and included some real-life size replicas of sharks and their jaws. One of their favourite parts was seeing how their whole bodies would fit inside the jaws of the shark on display.
After the WA Maritime Museum we ate lunch at the Esplanade Park and had some time to play on the playground. It was a lovely way to finish off the day before our long journey back home to Butler. All the students wore smiles on their faces and had a fantastic day. We would like to thank the parent helpers who came on the day as they did a wonderful job.
