A Note from the Principal

Butler Primary School is a busy vibrant place and we love it!
The staff work tirelessly to ensure that our students have every opportunity to learn new things, participate in in-school events, and go out of the school to visit places and experience for those once in a life time opportunities. They work collaboratively planning activities, checking that their assessment of student work is fair and consistent, developing an in-depth shared understanding of the WA Curriculum and they are constantly watching over our students to make sure they are growing and developing into happy well adjusted individuals.
In the last month the students at Butler Primary School have participated in our Athletics Carnival, the State Cross Country Competition and the One Big Voice Festival which was held at the Perth Arena. They have also participated in and celebrated National Science Week and Book Week. Throughout this week the students had the opportunity to be immersed in innovative activities that link to the Indonesian culture. The learnings from these activities connect beautifully to the Nusantara Indonesian Festival which is being held at our school on Sunday, 15 September. I encourage everyone to make the effort and come along to enjoy the music, dance, food and friendship.
To ensure that our broader community is a fun, respectful and safe place to be a part of, Butler Primary School is working in partnership with the Western Australian Police to keep kids in school. The program provides a framework for schools to work with local businesses to send a united message to the community regarding school attendance. This program actively discourages students from accessing shopping centres during school hours.
A big thank you and congratulations to staff, students and parents for the collective contribution to ensuring our school is a huge success. It is a privilege to be part of this fantastic school community.

Class Assemblies in Review
Rm 14
Each year schools across Australia celebrate Book Week. Book Week is a celebration of reading and great literature. Room 14 had their assembly the following week. It was based of variations of the classic fairy tales Cinderella and The 3 Little Pigs.
As a class we adapted the fairy tales for a modern twist, where the wolf was the victim and was just after a cup of sugar. We also adapted Cinderella so that it was Prince Cinders and the three hairy brothers.
The students did a fantastic job and loved practicing for the assembly.

Whats On In…
Science / Technology Week
This term we had science and technology week. Each year a theme is picked for all activities to focus around. The theme for 2019 was “Destination Moon". This theme is a way for teachers and their students to discover past missions to the Moon and space programs that have solved some of the seemingly unsolvable problems—and current and future space programs, operations and missions. Many of these use big picture thinking in science to solve problems, and technology, engineering and mathematics to design new solutions. This will help forge our future paths in the areas of space operations, space science, Earth observations, positioning systems and communications.
Students from Pre- Primary to year 6 engaged in a day full of science and technology activities. All classes competed in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) challenges and winners from each year group were awarded certificates and prizes. Students created solutions to problems that may encounter in space.

Creating an astronaut.

Students coding Bee bots to collect the materials needed for things to grow.

“Coding” other students, similar to coding the bee bots.

Year 4– Creating a moon terrain to be navigated by Sphero’s.

Year 2— Students created a moon buggy for the moon’s surface.

Year 6 - Students in year 6 completed their STEM challenge based on Forced Perspective Photography

Year 4—Students in Year 4 designed a space bridge from the Airlock to a space station. This had to support weight and be fully enclosed.

Students in year 6 constructed a Space station making sure it had all necessities for survival.
Physical Education 2019
It’s been another massive year for Physical Education in 2019 at Butler Primary School! Following the senior Summer and Winter Sports Carnivals it was straight into Interschool and State Cross Country this term. Interschool Cross Country was held at Quinns Beach Primary School for Years 4-6. All distances were 1500m and with six boy and girl representatives for each year level, Butler Primary School finished third overall with six schools participating. Dedicated weekly running club participants showed some great individual results with Mia Haast finishing 3rd in Year 5 girls, Lucas Masterman finishing 2nd for Year 5 boys, Dean Smythe finishing 2nd for Year 6 boys, and Ashleigh Whiteman finishing 1st for Year 6 girls!
State Cross Country was held at UWA park in Mt Claremont and was done on a much larger scale with longer distances and a combination of 59 public and private schools. Butler Primary School held its own finishing an admirable 29th overall. Our students were well trained for the longer distances of 2000m (Year 4) and 2500m (Year5/6) and some individual brilliance must be acknowledged from Dean Smythe and Jayden Stone who finished 20th and 21st respectively, out of 269 competitors!
Our faction sports carnival was bigger and better this year with the addition of a separate half day Jumps, Throws and 800m Carnival for Years 4-6 along with our whole day Athletics Carnival for every student. Faction and individual championship points were accumulated across both events culminating in a close victory to Alkimos! This year a Butler Primary School athletic records perpetual shield has been created for the 100m, 400m, 800m, 2000m, Jumps, and Throws events. The following new records will be recorded on the shield:
100m
Zoe Hammond 15.38sec
Isaiah Bropho 14.18sec
400m
Ashleigh Whiteman 1.05m
Dean Smythe 1.07m
800m
Ashleigh Whiteman 2.44m
Lucas Masterman 2.28m

Music News!

2019
Friday, 30th August saw the arrival of the much anticipated One Big Voice Festival at the RAC Arena. This year saw 6000 students from 110 schools come together for the first time to rehearse their part of different songs. Our choir practised each song and its choreography many times until they were mastered. It wasn’t until we arrived at the RAC Arena that afternoon that we had our first and only rehearsal as the One Big Voice Choir. Shortly after, their much loved family and friends arrived in the audience to witness an EPIC concert!

Songs chosen by the OBV Committee and OBV Director, Donna Marwick-O’Brien are songs that empower us and have a positive message. The One Big Voice Choir entertained us with 11 songs!
- One Big Voice
- Platypus
- Words of Peace
- Rain
- A Tisket, A Tasket
- High Hopes
- We Believe in Music
- Like a Bird
- Can You Hear the Children Marching?
- A Million Dreams
- Unbreakable

A massive congratulations to each and every one of you from the school choir, for the way you represented Butler Primary School and your extraordinary performance of each and every song. I am one pretty proud and lucky music teacher!
And to our comperes Rori (Room 6) & Lottie (Room 8), and soloists Imogen (Room 8) & Sophie (Room 16) - you were superb! You amazed me with your exuberant speaking and beautiful singing. Nice one!
Here are some quotes from some of our choir members about the One Big Voice Festival.
I found the OBV concert to be an amazing event. It was very enjoyable and special to my family because they love the songs they had selected and it was a pleasure to hear me sing. One Big Voice has made an epic turn on my singing confidence. It has made me realise that everyone in the OBV Choir has an amazing voice – Sophie (Room 16)
I had a really great time and I would love to do it next year! I will try really hard next year to get a solo piece! – Lucas (Room 16)
OBV was great, it was the best experience of my life. I’m very excited for next year and of course we have the best music teacher in the world to help us get through all the songs – Lucas (Room 13)
One big voice made me feel like I can do anything, it felt like one big family!! – Imogen (Room 8)

And lastly, thank you to our wonderful parent helpers Mrs Padley, Mrs Joubert and Mrs Masterman for giving us their time to assist with the day. Also, a huge shout-out and thank you to Ms Botma for being an amazing help to not only myself but the choir too. We couldn’t do any of it without any of you.

From the Library

The library has been very busy during this term with student borrowing, class timetables and Book Week. The Pre-Primary and Kindy classes enjoyed their story time during book week with the book “Winston the Book Wolf’ being read to them by Winston himself!

These are some of the books we have recently purchased through our Book Request Box in the library. Students are invited to complete one of the request forms which we use to help us in our purchasing decision. Students who have requested books are the first to borrow them when they come in.

A gentle reminder for all students to return/renew their library books on their classroom library day. If students fail to return books, an invoice will be sent home for the replacement cost and they are unable to borrow until the book/s have been returned, replaced or the replacement costs paid for.
