A Note from the Principal

Welcome back to Term 3. Our term calendar is packed with sensational learning opportunities for our students. With Science week, Book week, our Faction Carnival, Interschool Carnival, the Nusantara Festival (this is our community event on the 15 September) and the exceptional everyday classroom experiences we will all be exhausted by the end of term.

We have had some staff changes this term. I would like to welcome Mr Callum Hawes and Ms Lorreen Brand to Butler Primary School. I hope they find our school community welcoming and enjoy their time with us.

Often at this time of year, we see an increase in conflict and friendship issues between students. Sometimes they forget to think about what strategies they can use to resolve social and emotional issues.

One of the things that helps our students to maintain that sense of spirit, and enjoy calm and peaceful relationships is having a process to use in solving problems and dealing with conflict. I have shared the ‘High 5’ previously and it is a great strategy that students can use both at home and at school so that they don't have to just run on anger and emotion. They can use their clear thinking parts of their brain and apply the ‘High 5’ to respond at times when their “button is being pushed”.

There are five parts to the High 5 strategy:

1. Talk Friendly 2. Talk Firmly 3. Ignore 4. Walk Away 5. Report

It is important to remember that when students are feeling irritated or annoyed by something and they are aiming for an outcome they need to use a strong assertive voice. Using appropriate language and names, they can tell the person what it is that they are doing that is affecting them, and tell them to stop. Often, the other person is trying to get a reaction, so ignoring is important. It doesn't give them what they want, and helps us self-manage and not make the situation worse. The final step in reporting is important. The adults in our school can't help if we don't know what is going on, so it is important to follow up.

Please discuss it with your child, role play the firm and friendly assertive voice, and encourage your children to report where they need to!

This message leads into ‘Taking responsibility for your own actions’. This ties in nicely with the High 5 as it provides a great avenue for self-managing and being responsible. I would like to think that we all have a value of honesty and taking responsibility is one component of honesty. We all make mistakes in life, it is important that we are honest with ourselves and others around us because it is in doing this that we truly learn and grow.

So, it is important that our students know that if someone is using the High 5 strategy because they are not happy with what is happening, the person being asked to stop has the responsibility to stop, listen and refrain from continuing the annoying or disrespectful behaviour. In this way we can ensure that all students feel safe and respected (two of our very important school values) every day.

Inaugural Year 6 Butler/ Quinns Beach AFL Shield

On Friday, 7 June the Footy Gods were looking down on the Butler Primary School AFL team as they gifted us a rare break in the wet and windy weather to allow us to walk to Quinns Beach Primary school to participate in the inaugural Butler/ Quinns Beach AFL shield. Both teams came to play which was shown in a strong commitment by all to win the ball. It was a deadlock with one goal apiece at halftime.

Some positional changes were required with Haylen thrown into the ruck, Trevon at full forward, with Chayse and Jayden on the wings. This had an immediate impact with Butler winning the clearances and pumping the ball forward with greater ease than Quinns Beach. We then built some unassailable scoreboard pressure with nippy forwards Chloeand Ashleigh chiming in with goals. Midfield stars Isaiah B, Isaiah C, and Laith must be acknowledged for their dominate performances. The final score was Butler - 6.5 def Quinns Beach - 1.4.

A big thankyou to Mr Ben Sweet from Quinns Beach to help facilitate the event and Daneka Utan for assisting with the walk and supervision of students to Quinns Beach. Students from both schools played with great spirit and sportsmanship. Bring on the first defence of the shield!

2019 Year 6 Winter Sports Carnival

With the addition of Merriwa, John Butler, and Alkimos Beach Primary schools into the Northern District Sporting Cell the 2019 Winter Sports Carnival was shaping up to be bigger and better than ever.

On the 21st of June the new additions joined long time staples- Quinns Beach, Alkimos, East Butler, and Butler Primary School in entering teams in all three sports- Netball, Soccer, and AFL. Mrs Danielle Martin walked the Netball team on the familiar route over to hosting school Butler College who kindly organised and umpired the event. Our team competed in six games to finish the round robin fixtures with the most wins and on top of the ladder! Well done to all involved and a big thank you to Dawn Davidson, Puawai Herewini-Tukere, and Elmarie Richardson for walking with the team and helping out with some coaching on the day.

Soccer was split into two events with Merriwa Primary hosting the girls, and Alkimos Beach Primary hosting the boys soccer. Mr Malins coached both teams throughout Term 2 and took the boys on the day. Short on numbers the boys battled hard and often played consecutive games without a break with the B division finishing an admirable 4th. Well done boys!

Fiona Park took the girls to Merriwa Primary and without much preparation did a fantastic job to manage the girls to an undefeated run to the Grand Final. Led by star striker Scarlett who bagged multiple goals throughout the day from inside and outside of the box, the girls went the distance against East Butler in the final to take out the flag 3-1. Congratulations girls!

Mr Riley and Mr Milner teamed up with success for game day coaching duties for the AFL team. Undefeated throughout the day Butler made the Grand Final in what would become an epic Butler/ Quinns Beach rematch. Once again the first half was neck and neck with Quinns proving they were hungry to reclaim bragging rights. It was goal for goal in a tough first half with both teams five goals apiece at halftime. Haylen was thrown back into the ruck in the second half, and Laith was required as a marking target at Full Forward. Butler appeared to have more legs in the midfield and delivered the ball truly into the forward line to run over the top of Quinns with commanding final score line of Butler 9.11.54 to Quinns Beach 5.2.32. Once again midfielders Isaiah B, Isaiah C, Laith , Chayse, Razique and Cooper must be acknowledged for their consistently excellent performances. Stephanie also kicked some wonderful goals, and brothers Noah and Koby put on some great defensive pressure. Fantastic effort from the AFL team!

The whole Year 6 cohort must be congratulated in all sports for representing the school values at all times and showing great spirit, attitude and sportsmanship throughout the day. Thank you to parents and teachers for your continued support.

NAIDOC Week 2019 at Butler Primary School

NAIDOC Week 2019 was celebrated in Week 1 of Term 3. Students from K-6 were immersed in cultural sharing and learning during the week, including language, art, history, singing and storytelling.

Lessons during the week were held in the Yarning Circle, and students learnt about Acknowledgement of Country, the six Noongar Seasons and the Noongar names of some animals in our area.

Thursday, 25 July was our day of celebration. Students dressed in Yellow, Red and Black colours to show respect for the Aboriginal Flag.

Alton and Jaye from Aboriginal Productions joined us for a wonderfully interactive performance which including singing in Noongar Language, dancing and storytelling.

Following this, the whole school went onto the oval to form the Aboriginal Flag.

Thank you to Erin & Nathan Lovell for volunteering to take photos and video using a drone.

Cultural sharing is an important part of the WA Curriculum. NAIDOC Week was a fantastic opportunity to show our Butler school values of respect and responsibility for both Noongar and Aboriginal culture.

Thank you to all staff, students and parents for a great NAIDOC Week 2019.

Class Assemblies in Review

Room 13 – Thursday, 13 June

On Thursday, 13 June Room 13 had our assembly. Our assembly was themed around Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history and traditions.

Firstly, we spoke about the way that Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander peoples used to hunt and gather their food. We showed the school some dot paintings and rock carvings.

Next, we performed a popular dreamtime story called “How the Kangaroos Lost Their Tails”. Lastly, we sang the Marrin Gamu song in our local Noongar language.

We worked so hard and Miss Gates was so proud of our efforts!

Miss Gates
Class Teacher

Room 4 – Thursday, 20 June

On Thursday, 20 June Room 4 presented their assembly. As a class we decided that it would be a good idea to share one of our favourite books, ‘The Recess Queen’. The book is about friendship and how it’s important to include others in the games we play. We had lots of fun and were very grateful that Frankie was able to step in as one of the main characters when somebody was absent on the day.

Mrs Romano
Class Teacher

Room 17 – Thursday, 1 August

On Thursday, 1 August Room 17 had the pleasure of hosting the Senior Assembly. We have been exploring the different ways in which people learn and how we can include everyone. The students had fun performing Fight Song in Auslan, which is the language of the deaf community in Australia and stands for Australian Sign Language. There are many different sign languages throughout the world, usually there is a different sign language in each country. Experts have identified at least 137 different sign languages. We then had the opportunity to share our reflections on what inclusivity means to us. We hope that we got everyone thinking about the importance of this value and what it means to you. The children are to be congratulated for enjoying their special day and for speaking so clearly into the microphone.

Whats On In…

Year 3 - Technology

This term the Year 3 students are learning to code with Dash and Dot. Dash and Dot are robots that can sense, act and think. Students use block coding on four different iPad apps to control their robots. We have enjoyed taking Dash on driving lessons, teaching him to look around, move in different directions at different speeds, light up in different colours and make sounds. Dash is always entertaining us with the way he reacts to different situations. We can’t wait to see what he will do next!

Music News!

IMSS

Well done to the Year 6 clarinet, Year 5/6 brass and Year 6 guitar students on their performance in Week 8.
