A Note from the Principal

Public School Review
All Western Australian public schools are reviewed every three years by the Department of Education’s Public School Accountability directorate.
We participated in our public school review on 5 June 2019. Ms Kath Ward Director, Public School Review and Mr Gary Quinn Principal, Dalyellup Primary School, Peer Reviewer met with a number of staff, Board members, Parent and Citizen’s representatives and key partnership personnel to validate our self-assessment of the school’s performance.
For all Western Australian public schools the school’s performance rating can be either effective or needs improvement. Based on these interactions and our self-assessment evidence the school’s performance rating is effective. This means that as a school we demonstrated effective practice in creating the conditions required for student success.
The following areas of school performance; relationships and partnerships; learning environment; leadership; use of resources; teaching quality and student achievement and progress were the focus of the review.
The following comments were made by the reviewers:
Relationships and partnerships
The school’s leaders have forged a culture of high care and high expectations, both within the school and the wider school community. The influence of the Principal in fostering an environment where stakeholder engagement and collaboration is valued, is widely acknowledged. Staff are empowered to lead and engage in the core business of ensuring success for all students. Strategic partnerships enhance the opportunities for students.
Learning Environment
A shared responsibility for ensuring a safe, orderly and inclusive learning environment is evident. Quality formalised processes for the management of attendance, engagement, behaviour and students at educational risk (SAER) exists. A proactive approach to meet the shifting needs of the school community highlights a genuine sense of care for all stakeholders. This nurturing ethos is reinforced by the positive reward culture in the school.
Leadership
There is clear evidence of a highly effective distributed leadership model. A high level of trust exists in, and toward, the school’s leadership team. Staff engage actively in decision making processes and are well supported to implement programs aligned to the school’s direction.
Use of Resources
The leadership team ensure appropriate resourcing to support student achievement. The use of resources is aligned clearly to school operations, in turn optimising the conditions for student success. Decision making processes are transparent and accepted.
Teaching quality
The school’s vision to be recognised as having a focus on high quality teaching is underpinned by a sophisticated continuous improvement agenda. A strong culture of data literacy and reflective practices has led to a shared and unified approach to teaching and learning.
Student achievement and progress
The school gathers and analyses a broad range of data, both school-based and systemic, to assist in identifying the most suitable evidence based strategies to pursue. A strong ethos of high care and equally high performance expectations underpins all of the school’s practices.

Prestigious Honour for Mrs Elliott
Many of you will be familiar with the outstanding service that Mrs Kay Elliott provides in the front office of our school, and has done since its foundation. (You may also be familiar with her passion for the West Coast Eagles!) Perhaps you did not know that she has also been working tirelessly for an association, the Western Australian Education Corporate Services Staff Association, which provides support and training to School Officers and Manager of Corporate Services. Kay has served on the committee of WAECSSA/WASSRA for over 12 years and helped to build and shape it in to the professional association it is today. Kay has recently resigned from working on the committee of WAECSSA and at this year’s Conference was awarded with a Life Membership. Past Presidents nominating her for this award honoured her hard work, professionalism and the lasting relationships she built with sponsors.
We would like to congratulate Mrs Elliott on receiving her Life Membership with WAECSSA.

Medical Information
Asthma Management
It is important the school is aware if your child has Asthma, please contact the school office 9562 1804 to advise if you child has any level of Asthma.
Please also find following some helpful information about asthma.
Managing your asthma means taking control of your health so that you can live a full and active life. While asthma can’t be cured, for most people it can be well controlled, which means hardly any symptoms or flare-ups, or limits to your lifestyle.
With the correct knowledge, skills and medication you can do just about anything – asthma shouldn’t stop you!
Taking your medication, having an asthma management plan, knowing asthma first aid and regular check-ups with your GP are the most important steps you can take to improve your asthma control.
Monitor your symptoms
What you’re aiming for is to get control of your asthma. That means:
- You have symptoms no more than 2 days a week;
- You need your reliever medicine no more than 2 days a week, or not at all;
- Your activities are not limited by your asthma;
- You don’t get any symptoms at night or when you wake up.
If you’re having symptoms more often, or needing to use your reliever, then your asthma could be better controlled and might be holding you back.
Know your triggers
A trigger is something that sets off or starts asthma symptoms. Everyone’s asthma is different, and everyone has different triggers.
For most people with asthma, triggers are only a problem when their asthma is not well-controlled with medicine.
Understand your medication
Asthma medications keep you well and help you to maintain good asthma control.
Relievers are fast acting medications that give quick relief of asthma symptoms. They relax the muscle around the outside of the airway to open it up. They start to work within minutes and last for up to 4 hours. Everyone with asthma should have a reliever medicine so they can use it whenever they have asthma symptoms. But if you find you need to use your reliever more than two days per week (other than before exercise) your asthma may not be well controlled and you should see your doctor. This type of medication is also used in asthma first aid. You should carry your reliever medication at all times in case of asthma symptoms.
Preventer medications make the airways less sensitive, reduce redness and swelling and help to dry up mucus. Preventers need to be taken every day to reduce symptoms and asthma attacks, and it may take a few weeks before they reach their full effect. If you have a preventer take it every day, even when you feel well, to reduce your asthma symptoms.
Check your inhaler technique
Using your inhaler correctly helps your medications work better and reduce side effects. Up to 90% of Australians are thought to be using their inhaler incorrectly.
There are many different types of medication inhalers, one of the most common is the puffer (metered dose inhaler). Spacers are recommended to be used with puffers as it help deliver the right dose of medicine into your lungs.
Contact Asthma WA and ask a respiratory health educator to check your device technique. You can also talk to your GP or pharmacist about how to use the different devices.
Asthma Action Plan
Your asthma action plan outlines:
- What medication to take.
- How to tell if your asthma is getting worse.
- What you should do if your symptoms are getting worse.
- What to do if you have an asthma attack.
As asthma changes over time your plan should be reviewed once a year.
Know Asthma First Aid
Do not wait until your asthma is severe to use your reliever. You should call an ambulance and start asthma first aid if:
- You are struggling to breathe
- You can’t talk in a full sentence
- Your symptoms worsen quickly
- You have blue lips
- Your reliever has little effect
Asthma WA can help you learn about asthma, symptoms, triggers, medication and asthma first aid. Call us on 1800 ASTHMA to book your free consultation.

Class Assemblies in Review
Room 12 Assembly – 16 May 2019
Last term in Room 12, we learnt about biomes. For our assembly, we decided to take a tour around the world with our Bear Grylls and Room 12 exploration team and discover 4 of the biomes which exist in our world; Savannah, Desert, Tundra and Tropical. The students worked hard on researching these biomes and were excited to showcase both their knowledge and their acting skills.
Mr Henderson and Mrs Pierce
Class Teacher

D5 Assembly – 23 May 2019
D5 presented their assembly in Week 4. This assembly was all about the students reflecting on what is means to them to be a good friend along with how they like to use the Butler Values and Zones of Regulation in our classroom. We had a class discussion about it and then each student made their own sentence that they wanted to say to the audience. We also incorporated a fantastic (and catchy) Friendship Song into our item. The students did a great job – well done D5!
Miss Kelly
Class Teacher

Room 5 Assembly – 30 May 2019
This Semester, the Year six students have been focusing on the Asian continent in their Geography lessons. To demonstrate their learning and research skills, Room 5 performed a play for their assembly item. Much of the play’s content was developed by the students themselves (with a little creative assistance from Mrs Jones). The class used their inquiry skills to research different interesting facts about Asia, which the students clearly and confidently shared at the assembly. The play also focused on the use of Kahoot, which is an online quiz creation tool that the year sixes will be using to demonstrate their learning. Room 5 organised, practised and performed their item with very little influence from Mrs Jones and their efforts definitely paid off. The class spoke and performed fantastically. Well done Room 5!

Whats On In…
Butler Pre Kindy Group
During this term at Pre Kindy we were excited to have a visit from a baby alpaca. We enjoyed showing him around the playground and feeding him with a bottle. Mrs Johnston read a story about “Macca the Alpaca” and we made an alpaca picture to take home. We have been busy doing lots of fun, learning activities throughout the term as well as getting to know new friends and learning to share with them. Every session we listen to a story together and join in with music time. If you would like to join us next term with your Pre Kindy child please enquire at the school office.
Mrs Johnston

Kindy – Circus Incursion
This Term the Kindy children participated in a Circus performance and workshop with “Scooby” from Ricochet Circus. The children were amazed by “Scooby’s” skills with diablo, juggling balls, spinning plates, flower sticks and his unicycle. After “Scooby” demonstrated his skills it was time for the children to have a go at the spinning plates. Each child took great care to focus on the top of the stick in order to balance the spinning plate. Following on from this experience the children have been involved in some guided play sequences about going to the circus and putting on a performance. They have practiced their story telling skills, mathematics activities and gross motor skills as they explore the theme of Circus in the classroom.
Mrs Johnston

Pre-Primary - West Oz Wildlife Incursion
On Tuesday 7th May Kendall from West Oz Wildlife came to visit the pre-primary classrooms. She brought along her friends Kira the koala, Hero the woma python, Rocky the Stimson’s python, Lizzie the bobtail lizard, Larry the blue-tongue lizard and Luna the kangaroo.
We all got the chance to pet the animals and hold the snakes whilst learning some interesting facts about the animals and how to safely respond to a wild snake.
Luna the kangaroo enjoyed PP1’s Australian bush home corner and joined the toy animals! We all had a wonderful time.

Year 2
This term in Year 2, we have been having a fantastic time learning about Technologies through our CLIL lessons. We have been so clever, studying the Indonesian language and embedding Technology into our learning. All the students have loved going into Ibu Kellie and Ibu Kagumi’s engaging Indonesian themed classroom and we have been learning so much about technology (teknologi) while using the iPads and the laptops. On the iPad we have looked at the Quiver app and discovered how amazing the Indonesian flag and a volcano looks in 3D. We have created our own tally of family members using Indonesian words for family members, Indonesian numbers in the tally and then Indonesian colours to create a key in our picture. We then used the laptops to create a picture on the “paint” program and incorporated all the information we had collected from our tally. The Year1/2 and 2 classes have looked forward to our weekly CLIL lessons, eager to be challenged whilst having fun along the way.

From the Library
Hello from the Library!
As we race toward the end of Term 2, we can report that ‘business’ has been very busy in the Library with new books being added to our collection, book club orders processed and distributed and displays renewed.
Our recent display was a sports theme to advertise our new sports books as well as to showcase some of our school’s sports stars, who have achieved amazing successes in various sporting arenas.

Next week and until the end of term, the Library will be hosting a display of Year 5 and Year 6 science models and posters. Please visit the Library and view some of the amazing work from these two groups.
Book Club
Issue 4/2019 has been processed and will be distributed to students before the end of term. Please remember that ordering through the Scholastic Loop process is very convenient and items ordered through this method are delivered to school and we distribute them to students.
