A Note from the Principal

We have had a very smooth start to Term 2. We have had a number of new students and two new teachers join Butler Primary School. We warmly welcome our new students along with Ms Gates and Ms Scally.
I am very proud of our students who continue to demonstrate our school expectations of good citizenship, respectful behaviour, proudly wearing our school uniform, responsibility and aspiration.
This week our Year 3 and 5 students have been participating in the National Assessment Program known as NAPLAN. The online assessments are responsive to the students’ answers and adjust the questions that they are posed. This is designed to deliver a more tailored, meaningful and reliable experience for each individual student.
NAPLAN provides the school with a detailed picture of students’ academic progress and the assessments should confirm what we already know, and that is our students participate in highly effective learning programs.
NAPLAN is one of many assessments we use to build a picture of what our students can and cannot do. It is important that we don’t place too much pressure on our Year 3 and 5 students. Whilst we want them to do their best it is one test on one day.
Over the vacation break the Department of Education removed two of our transportable classrooms. The area has been grassed and it is our intention to purchase some outdoor furniture so that our year 2 and 3 students have an area to utilise.
Friday 17th May is National Walk Safely to School Day.
We have many students who regularly walk or ride a bike or scooter to school, but would like to encourage those who live close enough to walk, but usually travel by car to give walking a go. By walking to school our students have the opportunity to develop vital road crossing skills and they will be increasing their health and fitness. Research tells us that Australian children are becoming less active.
Wear Orange for PWS – 30th May 2019
May is Prader-Willi Syndrome awareness month and last year one of our families was faced with the challenge of having a child who has been diagnosed with this syndrome.
Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) affects every aspect of the person’s life. Their brains struggle to regulate every aspect of their body. With a life expectancy of ~30, they have global developmental delays, challenging behaviours, mental illness and, the hallmark feature of the disease, a feeling of relentless hunger. Without very careful management, this leads to morbid obesity and early death. But these children are also fighters with giant hearts. The strength, resilience and courage they show each and every day to do things that most children take for granted are remarkable.
Prader-Willi Syndrome is a rare condition; research is grossly underfunded, and unfortunately will not happen unless driven by the PWS community. PWS research also has the opportunity to provide insights into some of society’s most challenging problems, including obesity, mental illness and autism.
The Prader-Willi Research Foundation of Australia (PWRFA) is a small not-for-profit, established in 2015, run by parents of children with PWS. PWRFA approach to finding treatments are twofold – in the short term to identify and fund projects to mitigate the most crippling symptoms and to improve quality of life, and in the longer term, to develop a genetic treatment (PWRFA are already funding such genetic research). With today’s bio-tools, a genetic treatment is absolutely achievable.
More information can be found on the website and Facebook page.
Butler Primary School will hold a free dress day ‘Wear Orange for PWS’ on Thursday 30th May.
This will be a free dress day and students are asked to donate a gold coin to raise much needed funds for this cause. Teachers will incorporate a relevant activity into their learning program so that our students have an understanding of why we are raising money for this cause.

Class Assemblies in Review
D4 – 4 April
In Term 1, D4 and the other Year 2's received a GIANT delivery. This sparked an exciting discovery of some giant clothing and a new book about a smart giant. In Term 1, we also started a new whole school program called Talk for Writing. This saw us reading our new book and acting out the actions to help us remember the book (even without the words!).
Dressed in their giant clothing and as animals our smartest giant had met, D4 amazed the school as they recited and acted out the entire story to ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’. D4 also learned the valuable lesson to always be yourself and be kind to others. D4 should be proud!
Miss Brennnan
Class Teacher

Room 7 – 2 May
To start off Term 2, The Year 6’s in Room 7 performed our assembly entitled ‘I’m Australian Too’. After realising the rich cultural diversity in our school during Harmony Week in Term 1, we decided to uncover where our families came from and then research information about those places. We then surveyed the rest of the school to find out some statistics about where Butler students and their parents hail from. So for our assembly we decided to share the information we researched as well as some cultural performances from some of these countries including the Haika and some soccer skills. We then capped it off with a fun dance called the ‘Cha, Cha Slide’ to celebrate coming together.
All the students worked hard to research, complete the survey, create the PowerPoint slides, practise their performances and learn the dance. We are all very proud of how it all came together and how the effort paid off. We also all had so much fun!!
Mrs Martin and Mrs Bruce
Class Teachers

Room 1 – 8 May
The theme for Year 1 Room 1’s assembly was ants. The students really enjoy singing and ‘The Ants Go Marching’ was a firm favourite to perform at our assembly. We learnt the words and worked out actions to fit the song. While making ant masks, one student asked if ants have teeth. That led to some research about ants, which we incorporated into the assembly. As we had been learning about question marks, the students presented the facts as questions such as… Do you know ants are insects? Do you know ants have six legs? Do you know ants live in colonies with lots of other ants?
We finished off our assembly with a tribute to all the mums for Mother’s Day. Everyone joined in a sing-a-long to ‘I Can’t Stop This Feeling’. Congratulations to all of the students. I am super proud of each and every one of them!

Whats On In…
Year 1
YEAR 1 BUCKINGHAM HOUSE EXCURSION – Room 1, 2, 3 and 4
At the end of Term 1, all Year 1 students participated in a visit to Buckingham House in Wanneroo as part of our History Curriculum. We learnt about what life was like in the olden days.
We cooked Damper in an old kitchen – we saw a wood stove with a fire in it, and there was no fridge! There was no electricity so the teapot was on the stove. We also saw an old bedroom, with a metal bed and lots of handmade rugs and blankets. There was even a bucket to go to the toilet at night and newspaper instead of toilet paper – we weren’t very impressed with that idea and decided we like our modern day houses that we live in now!
In the olden days there were no clothes shops, so people had to sew their own clothes. We learnt how to sew our initial on some hessian cloth.
Then we went to the laundry – we each learnt to wash some material on a washboard with soap. We had to use our hands and our arms got tired! Then we squeezed the water out of the material, and learnt how to hang it on the clothesline with dolly pegs.
We learnt where milk came from, and had a turn at milking the pretend cow! We also saw machinery that was used on the farm and a cart that used to be pulled by a horse.
Finally we went to an old school. The teacher was very strict. We had to write on a slate with chalk, and the teacher showed us what happened in the olden days if a student was misbehaving at school. We were glad we didn’t go to school back then!
We ate our damper for morning tea and played olden day games at recess. It was an amazing day to share with our teachers and our wonderful parent volunteers who came with us.

D1 Gardening
D1 has been busy giving the raised garden beds a makeover with help from Activities Officer, Julie, from Bunnings in Mindarie. The Year 3’s have been talking about sustainable practices and food and fibre production as a part of their Design and Technologies work. The students discussed what they would like to plant and voted on their favourite choices before creating posters outlining the best ways to take care of the space. We would like to sincerely thank Mindarie Bunnings who were generous enough to donate soil improver, seedlings and gardening tools to help establish the space.
The Year 3’s are especially excited to watch the vegetables grow and to use these in some cooking later in the term.

From the Library
Welcome to Term 2.3
We are pleased to advise that all students have settled back into Library life particularly our gorgeous Kindy borrowers, who enjoy making their own choices in books.
We like to keep up with the latest trends in books and restock our collection continuously. Children are invited to put forward their suggestions for books they’d like to see in the Library.
Please remind your children of their Library day and please encourage them to return their borrowed books in the due date. Overdue books will incur a replacement fee so that we can replace the overdue/lost book.
Book Fair
We hosted a Scholastic Book Fair in Term 1 and would like to thank all families who supported the Fair. We will be holding our usual end-of-year Book Fair in Term 4, and will advise dates as soon as possible.
Thank you for your continuing support of the Butler Primary School Library.

Absentee Messaging Service
Please send absentee messages through to 0419 091 075 by 10.00am with all of the following details so we can correctly update student records:
- Full name of your child/children
- Explanation for absence
- Date of absence
Absences can also be phoned through to the office on 9562 1804, emailed via the website or a message sent via the Absentee tile in the School App.
As per Department of Education policy, it is the parent’s responsibility to notify the school of the reason for your child’s absence/s within three days of the absence. Failure to do this will mean that the absence will be marked as “unacceptable reason” affecting your child’s education and attendance record.
Update Student Contact Information
If you have recently changed mobile numbers or moved address, it is important you update your contact information with the office. Please also advise if there is a change to any of your emergency contact information.
