A Note from the Principal

Over my long career in education I have built a strong belief and conceptual framework of what constitutes effective teaching and learning. In leading Butler Primary School I have been able to apply that knowledge and utilise my experience to influence and impact on our continuous improvement agenda by establishing clear expectations for staff and students; creating the conditions that enable everyone to perform at their best; and working collaboratively to strengthen our accountability processes so that we can demonstrate our effectiveness.

Throughout 2019 Butler Primary School Staff are continuing to build on and strengthen our culture of high performance and high care. In response to ongoing self-assessment findings our improvement planning will focus on:

  • developing and embedding an explicit school wide approach to teaching literacy and numeracy
  • strengthening our approach to student health and well being
  • strengthening our approach to positive behaviour
  • implementing opportunity for students to participate in academic extension and challenge programs

The level of care and commitment of the staff at our school is second to none and I am proud to work with people of their quality.

A love of learning is evident throughout the school and in week ten I will be privileged to have lunch with six outstanding students who display respect, responsibility, integrity, community and aspiration every day.

I wish everybody a safe, restful and happy vacation break.

Mrs Julie Woodhouse
Principal

Academic Extension

Year 5 and 6 students participating in the Academic Extension Science program at Butler College participated in a special tutorial on the science and technology used to build traditional Aboriginal tools. The session was led by Jason Barrow, Cultural Awareness Officer, from Edith Cowan University. Students learnt about the components needed to make tools including how to make glue from naturally occurring materials including the sap from grass trees.

WA Police Pipe Band

On Friday 8th March we were extremely lucky to have the Western Australia Police Pipe Band visit our school. They entertained the whole school with their fantastic music. They gave an explanation of each instrument and the names of the various parts of their uniform. They even had some staff members entertain us doing the Hokey Pokey. The students and staff thoroughly enjoyed this incursion and what a great way to promote positive relations between the community and the Western Australia Police.

Old Ways New Ways Program, Edith Cowan University

Butler Primary School is proud to be involved in a partnership with Edith Cowan University to participate in the ‘Old Ways New Ways Program’.

Old Ways, New Ways is a multi-award winning outreach initiative which links Aboriginal cultural competency and the ‘Old Ways’ of Aboriginal science with the current or ‘New Ways’ of scientific knowledge.

Creative, hands-on science activities are at the core of the program. Students are taken on a journey of scientific exploration, where traditional methods of Aboriginal toolmaking and ancient techniques for bushland survival are celebrated, shared and linked to practical, current scientific methodology and enquiry. The practical nature of the workshops strongly engages the students, giving them a fresh vision into educational possibilities for their future. There is an emphasis on capacity-building and raising aspirations for higher education attainment and participation. This hands-on approach seeks to motivate students to study science at high school and beyond, and to improve understanding of Traditional knowledge and it is complementary to current scientific methodologies.

The program team comprises both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal staff, and models strong cross-cultural partnerships. The initiative brings together ECU staff from Kurongkurl Katitjin and the School of Science.

  • Mr Jason Barrow
  • Ms Caroline Bishop
  • Dr Kristina Lemson
  • Dr Magda Wajrak

Term 1 saw our Year 5/6 Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students participate in traditional Aboriginal games and forms of messaging, as well as digital coding using traditional signs and symbols.

2019 Cricket Club

On Friday, 22 March Butler Primary participated in the annual Super 8’s Cricket Competition at Butler College. Ten Year 6 students represented the school in a competition featuring East Butler, Quinns Beach and Merriwa. Butler entered the contest as reigning champions having brought home the trophy in 2017 and 2018. Led by Ben Aresti, Josh Whent, and Stephanie Potgieter Butler faced a strong Quinns Beach side first up that won comprehensively. Not giving in, Butler bounced back with great fighting spirit and teamwork to win our next two games against East Butler and Merriwa and qualify for the Grand Final against Quinns Beach. Bowling first with the wind, Butler took early wickets and got off to a great start. Batting proved more difficult and ultimately the game became a nail biter- with Butler needing 5 runs off the last over. Unfortunately we couldn’t quite get over the line and Quinns stole the victory. A big thankyou to the small contingent of parents for coming down and showing their support. The High Performance cricket coordinator, Luke Edwards from Butler College, has once again organised a thoroughly enjoyable and WACA endorsed competition this year. Butler will be back again in 2020 to try and reclaim the trophy!

Class Assemblies in Review

Room 8 – 21 February

In Week 1 the students of Room 8 learnt about The Catastrophe Scale. The catastrophe scale helps us to put bad events into perspective, allowing us to bounce back and move on rather than overreacting to events.

Room 8’s performance was incredible considering the time they had to prepare. Students came up with the ideas for the scenes in groups and were always keen to rehearse their parts. Their dedication and persistence allowed them to perform the play well. Well done Room 8!

Mr Riley
Class Teacher

Room 2 – 28 February

To start 2019 off with a bang… The Year 1’s in Room 2 decided to present the first Junior Assembly of the year. Our theme was “Everyone is special” – We are smart, strong, brave, musical, and special.

All the students worked hard at learning their lines, telling everyone how special we are. Some great examples were:

“I can do 10 push ups with one hand” – Makuei
“I can build shelves with my Dad” – Stella
“I can ride my bike” – Noah
“I can do front flips on the grass” – Mason
“I can run super fast” – Lincoln

We performed an amazing song called ‘What I Am’. It was great to sing and dance in front of the audience. After merit certificates, we surprised everyone by doing the ‘Twist and Shout’. It was great to see everyone join in with us.

WHAT’S ON IN…

Pre-Kindy

The Pre Kindy Group has been meeting fortnightly on a in the PP5 Kindy room. The children and their parents have been making new friends, enjoying stories and participating in lots of activities to help develop fine motor, social and listening skills. If you would like to know more about this group and would like to join us next term please enquire at the School Office.

Mrs Johnston

Kindy

PP4

This term in Kindy Purple PP4 we have been focussing on the Early Years Framework of Being, Becoming and Belonging. We have provided lots of opportunity for the children to become socially responsible and show respect for our environment. Sustainability and care for the environment has featured daily in our discussions so we chose to investigate and create our own garden. In our garden we chose to plant not only edible items, but to also plant flowers that respond positively to the full sun they will receive.

We spent quite a bit of time preparing the soil by weeding and turning the soil over. Then we planted sunflowers, nasturtiums, tomatoes, lettuce, basil and parsley.

Every day we water and watch carefully to see if any of our plants have started growing.

We are observing and reflecting on the changes we see depending on the sunlight, temperature, clouds and rain.

When you are walking by the garden beds please take a look and talk with your child about what they expect will happen and how long it might take.

We look forward to extending their knowledge and enthusiasm by utilising the herbs and vegetables in our cooking. Stay tuned.

Mrs Davidson

PP5

In the PP 5 Kindy class this week we have been very busy exploring Michael Rosen’s story “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt”. After listening to the story and creating their own story maps the children took turns to act out the story in our home corner. We experienced the texture of the long wavy grass and the feeling of the water and mud on our feet. The swirling, whirling snow storm was a favourite with many. Our hunt finished inside the cave where we found several friendly bears.

Mrs Johnston

PP6

Throughout this term PP6 have been exploring the exciting concept of ‘Me’ and ‘the Family’. This has been an excellent way of getting to know each child individually. Our classroom has many wonderful pieces of work which have been created by the children in PP6. Here are a few examples for you to enjoy.

Mrs Saunders

Pre-Primary

PP1

In PP1 the students always have fun engaging in hands-on Mathematics activities. On this occasion they have been practising number recognition whilst fishing and playing bingo. They have been matching numbers to quantities with cookie jars and on the interactive whiteboard. Some of the students have mastered numbers 1-10 already and will be moving on to larger numbers and quantities in our differentiated program.

Mrs Sukiennik

PP2

Wow! What a term! We have read exciting books, like Mrs. Wishy-washy and are discovering how combinations of sounds make different words.

During Maths we have been looking at counting and extending our Maths vocabulary by investigating length and recording data. We have looked at words like longer, shorter, more than, less than, least and most.

We have also been answering questions such as 'Do you like strawberry ice-cream?' and recording everyone’s answers. We even created a bar graph based on the data collected. Wow! Our Pre-Primary students are cleaver.

Ms Irving

PP3

We started the year meeting up with some old Kindy friends and we made new ones too. We have been discussing various ways to show kindness, friendliness, honesty and respect both in and out of the classroom. Last week we began learning Indonesian and our parent roster started. Some parents came in to help with activities like woodwork, making of kites, art and craft, all of which was integrated with our maths and literacy program. We have been learning how to double numbers and sound out letters to make words, we even had a go at writing. Finally we celebrated Harmony Day.

Mrs Rowlinson

Chaplain’s Corner

Hi Everyone,

I hope this term is going well for you all. The celebration of Harmony Day in week 7 was a great reminder of our diversity and that we all belong.

Working together to create a harmonious school environment is a key area of focus for Butler Primary School. To assist everyone achieve this I encourage you to pause and think before you act. Proceed if your words and actions will be kind and positive.

As the end of term is nearly here I wish everyone safe and restful holidays.
