A Note from the Principal

Wonderful Start to 2019

We have had a wonderful start to the 2019 school year. I would like to thank our staff members, old and new, for their contribution to make it such a smooth start and to our fantastic students and their families for the manner in which they presented themselves. We certainly are fortunate to be part of such a committed and caring community.

Going to school every day is the single most important part of your child’s education. Students learn new things at school every day –missing school puts them behind.

At Butler Primary School we want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day. If students miss school regularly, they miss out on learning the fundamental skills that will set them up for success in the later years of school. There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses can put them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes. Each missed day is associated with progressively lower achievement in numeracy, writing and reading.

Attendance patterns are established early – a child who regularly misses days in kindergarten or in the early years of school will often continue to miss classes in the later years, and achievement is often less than their classmates. It’s vital that students come to school every day – even in Kindergarten.

Did you know that if your child misses 3 weeks of school per year they will have missed half a year of school by the end of year 6?

Procedures for K-6 Students who arrive at school prior to 8.20am

Student safety is important to us and our classroom doors open for students at 8.20am each morning.

Students who arrive at school before 8.20am must go directly to the undercover area and sit quietly. Supervision can only be guaranteed in the undercover area after 8.00am. An exception to this is when children are attending a school organised activity (e.g. choir, sports).

Even if parents are with their children, we ask that all children (and parents) move to the undercover area on arrival at school and wait there until dismissed by one of the Administration Team. Duty of Care requirements determine that children who arrive at school before 8.20am be in one designated area.

For safety reasons, students are not permitted to play sport or go on the playground equipment before or after school. Arrival and dismissal times at Butler Primary School are busy times. These procedures have been implemented to ensure the safety of all students at our school.

Your patience, courtesy and willingness to work with us is greatly appreciated and valued.

Cyber Safety

Your children’s online world is as much a part of their life as offline, so it is crucial that you are as involved in supporting their online wellbeing, as you are their physical health. Your skills in rule setting, support, guidance and respect are just as important to helping ensure your kids enjoy positive digital experiences and to help them gain confidence in asking for advice and support. Knowing they are equipped to make sound decisions and manage risks online is so important, especially with the number of internet-enabled devices that can be used without adult supervision. From time to time, the school is approached for assistance regarding social media issues and cyber safety.

We would recommend parents visit iParent website where there is a multitude of assistance including information about current apps that children are accessing:

Parent Parking

To help ease congestion around the school during peak times we encourage families to walk their children to and from school wherever possible, especially in fine weather, or park at the Community Centre car park and walk your children across the oval.

There are Kiss and Drive bays marked on Camborne Parkway for dropping your children off. We encourage families to not park and leave your car in these bays during the busiest times, keeping these bays free for Kiss and Drive.

All school staff park at the in the carpark off Tollesbury Avenue. The public car park off Camborne Way is available to parents.

Families are reminded that parking is not permitted on grassed kerbside areas around the Pre-primary car park and along Tollesbury Avenue, as well as the paved median strip in Camborne Parkway or across any footpaths (including the main driveway on Tollesbury Avenue). Parking or stopping to drop of students is not permitted in the school driveway on Tollesbury Avenue. Parking is also not permitted in bus bays. Please consider the safety of all other road users and pedestrians when parking and leaving schools grounds.

Please also give consideration and respect to the owners of properties surrounding the school.

All usual road and parking rules apply around the school and parking fines are issued by rangers (who visit frequently) to those not adhering to the road rules.

From the Library

Welcome back to our Library!! We hope you all have enjoyed your Christmas holiday break. We are looking forward to seeing all students coming into our library and borrowing some of the wonderful books we have on our shelves.

Lexile

Lexile books can be exchanged before school 8.20am to 8.35am Monday to Friday and after school 2.45pm to 3.00pm Monday to Thursday.

Student Overdue Library Books

Students are unable to borrow if they have any overdue books. A verbal reminder along with an individual overdue report will be issued to the student. If by the 2nd week of being overdue the books have still not been returned, parents will be invoiced for replacement costs. Students are unable to borrow from our library until the books are returned or replacements costs paid for. Our library has a total value of $412.00 worth of books that were not returned in 2018.

Parents, please ensure your child has a library bag which will keep borrowed books dry and clean, so that books can be borrowed by another child. The library bag can be a plastic A4 sleeve, plastic folder, shopping bag or fabric bag. Unfortunately, if books are returned damaged or soiled, you will be invoiced for the replacement cost.

Book Fair

Our school Book Fair will be held in the library Week 7 of Term 1, 18th March – 20th March.

We wish you all a great Term 1 and look forward to seeing you in our library.

Chaplain’s Corner

A warm hello to everyone,

Welcome to the first term of 2019! A special welcome to all students, parents, caregivers, staff and volunteers who are new to Butler Primary School.

I hope you are all looking forward making this year a great chapter in your life. New chapters in our life can be very exciting but also very challenging and overwhelming.

You can’t erase the bad chapters nor go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.

Forgiveness to another says, “I love myself more than I dislike your actions towards me”

So, when you forgive you don’t change the past but you’re sure change the future.

My name is Milda Nortje and I have the privilege to serve as the new chaplain at Butler Primary School this year.

Chaplaincy is a service offered by YouthCARE in schools across Western Australia. This service is available for students, families and staff. Part of the role of a chaplain is to listen, support, encourage and empower those who seek help.

Often in life we have to face challenges and trials we have not asked for or neither deserved. Especially during these times we need someone who is willing to really listen and support us through these difficult times.

A chaplain is not there to fix problems but can help with providing tools like referrals and resources to empower others to enable them to cope the best they can.

Anxiety

Anxiety in children and teens can make everyone feel helpless. It can come from anywhere and nowhere, and often it makes no sense at all. This is because anxiety is a primitive, instinctive response, not a rational one. Anxiety is driven by a strong, beautiful, healthy brain that is doing exactly what brains are meant to do – protect us from threat. Sometimes though, they can work a little too hard and have us avoiding the things that we’d be better moving towards.
