A Note from the Principal

Our teachers inspire our students to achieve their best!

At Butler Primary School we ensure that every child achieves success. It’s not WHAT makes the difference, it’s WHO. Our teachers are the heartbeat of our wonderful school.

Characteristics of our talented, dedicated teachers:

Passion: Our teachers love to teach. They love being educators, and they love the challenge of helping each of their students learn. Their passion is contagious, and they infect their students with a love of learning. Passion is what drives our teachers to put so much energy into our teaching.

High Expectations: Our teachers expect all of their students to work hard and to learn. They acknowledge that their students are at different stages and have varying levels of ability. However, they believe that all of their students can learn, that all of their students should achieve real, measurable progress every year.

Knowledge: Our teachers know the content that they need to teach, and they know the most effective ways of teaching it. Our teachers help students move from surface knowledge to deeper levels of understanding. They connect new knowledge to students’ prior knowledge, including knowledge from other curriculum areas, and they offer individualised suggestions to help each of their students improve.

Conscientiousness: Our teachers are great teachers and great teachers work hard. Teaching is not always easy, and it certainly isn’t a 9 to 3 job. Our teachers are driven to do well, and they understand the link between effort and success.

Care: Our teachers genuinely care about our students as people in much the same way that a loving parent would care about their child. Our teachers are approachable, respectful and empathetic. Our teachers believe in our students and challenge them to excel while simultaneously supporting them to do so.

This caring attitude lays the foundation for classrooms where students:

  • Believe in their own capacity to learn
  • Are not afraid of having a go or making mistakes
  • Are receptive to feedback that will help them learn.

Future Focused

I am looking forward to leading our school into the future to ensure our students imagine the possibilities, believe in themselves and create their brightest future. Innovation and positive partnerships creates the platform for us to provide extra opportunities for our students. In partnership with Butler College, we are introducing an Academic Enrichment Program for selected Year 5 and 6 students. The Academic Enrichment Program will challenge and extend our students in Science and English. The program will be a six week program, beginning week two of term two, and will be run on a Monday afternoon from 3.00pm to 3.45pm at Butler College. Butler Primary School Staff will walk the students to Butler College and parents will collect their children from Butler College. As this is an academic enrichment program selection of participants is based on academic achievement. We are very excited about this initiative and are extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to work with the dynamic staff from Butler College.

P&C: Embracing change in 2018

Firstly, I would like to acknowledge and thank the outgoing P&C executive members for the outstanding effort and contribution they made to our school. I am looking forward to a new and wonderful journey as I work alongside the newly elected P&C Executive for 2018. Working collaboratively we strive to ensure that our students can access the most innovative learning opportunities and that our school community comes together as one. I encourage you to be involved in our vibrant school community and attend the P&C meetings.

The P&C is a business as they employ staff to operate the canteen. Just like any business the P&C are required to meet legislative and legal requirements, and also need to be able to demonstrate that the business is financially viable. Financial viability, with regards to the canteen, has been an ongoing struggle for the P&C. In partnership with the P&C, I would just like to draw your attention to a few changes that will be happening in Term Two.

  1. The P&C have overwhelmingly voted to cease running a business and to work in partnership with the school to outsource the business. As an interim arrangement, for term two, Butler College Canteen will take responsibility for the running of the canteen and during this period the business will be advertised through a tender process.
  2. Ordering from the canteen will continue to be done online. There will be no over the counter lunch orders.
  3. The canteen will provide over the counter sales for recess.
  4. Arrangements for emergency recess/lunch remain unchanged.

Included in this newsletter is important information from the Butler College Canteen.

As I reflect on our first term of the 2018 school year I can’t help but be impressed with the collaboration and cooperation that happens across our school. A love of learning is evident throughout the school and at the end of the week I will be privileged to have lunch with six outstanding students who display respect, responsibility, integrity, community and aspiration every day.

I wish everybody a safe, restful and happy vacation break.

Notice to all Parents

Students arriving late to school after the siren sounds at 8.35am, need to enter the school through the front office to collect a late note which is to be given to their class teacher. This will help alleviate the problem of parents receiving an SMS at 10.00am advising that their child is absent when in fact they are at school.

WHAT’S ON IN?...........

Year 1 - Cockman House Excursion

The Year One classes took a step back in time on the 7th, 8th and 9th of March when they took part in an excursion to Cockman House. Cockman House is the oldest remaining residence in the City of Wanneroo and the students experienced first-hand what it was like to live in the olden days. They participated in a fun and interactive role-play timeline activity which tracked the Cockman and Backshall family history. The students then worked in small teams to crack a heritage code. They located each letter of the alphabet within the Cockman House grounds to find snippets of information about life and times of the pioneering Wanneroo families. The children also participated in old-fashioned games that children of the past played. The Year One students thoroughly enjoyed the trip to Cockman House and received a true insight into the history of our local area.

Year 1 – Learning Indonesian

'In Year One, the students have been learning Indonesian. The program focuses on language and cultural learning with key emphasis on speaking and listening in the early year levels. The students have been enjoying learning about the geography, the culture and the language of Indonesia. Each lesson, Ibu Sarah chooses two helpers, the girl helper wears a selendang (sarong) and the boy helper wears a udang (hat). The students have been trying hard to learn how to speak Indonesian. Here are a few phrases we have learnt so far- ‘Selamat pagi(good morning), bagus (good) and Terima kasih (thank you). Amazing effort Year Ones, keep up the hard work!'

D4 – Year 2

D4 presented their assembly in Week 6. The students sung a Tricky Words song and an Adjective song. They have since been busy using the tricky words and adjectives in their sentences to create WOW sentences. Great work D4!

YEAR 6 - Cricket

On Thursday the 29th of March, Butler Primary participated in the annual Super 8’s Cricket Competition at Butler College. 18 Year Six boys and girls represented the school in two teams across two divisions featuring East Butler, Quinns Beach, and Alkimos. Coached by Mr Milner, Butler was under some pressure to defend their title from 2017. Led by Jonah Klemke and Harlee Wallace, both teams competed with great spirit and sportsmanship to make both Grand Finals. Butler B proved too strong for Quinns Beach B, whereas Butler A had their work cut out for them to chase down 105 runs set by East Butler A. Excitement and suspense was building towards the end of the game culminating in the announcement and presentation of the trophy to Butler Primary for two famous victories! A big thankyou to Mr and Mrs Reid for helping out on the day and all the other parents for coming down and showing their support. The High Performance cricket coordinator- Luke Edwards from Butler College has once again organised a thoroughly enjoyable and WACA endorsed competition this year and will be presenting the engraved 2018 Champions Trophy to Butler Primary in Week 11 on Monday during line up. Bring on the three-peat in 2019!

Term 1 Swimming

Students in Years 3, 4, 5 & 6 participated in interm swimming lessons at Yanchep Lagoon during Weeks 8 & 9. The weather was beautiful and on all accounts the students had a wonderful time while learning very important water safety skills. The students are to be commended for the way they conducted themselves both on the buses and during the swimming lessons. We had many positive reports from the swimming teachers and bus drivers.

Harmony Day

On 21st of March it was Harmony Day! Harmony Day celebrates our differences and cultural diversity. In support of this, students and staff wore orange and each class participated in different activities.

PP5 celebrated by making a musical poster.

We had a photographic competition as well. Students got the opportunity to take photos that represented the theme, ‘Everyone Belongs’. Some year groups even decided to work together to create a class photo. What an exciting day!

Parent Parking

To help ease congestion around the school during peak times we encourage families to walk their children to and from school wherever possible, especially in fine weather or park at the Community Centre car park and walk your children across the oval.

All Staff park at the front of the school. This will free up all bays in the public car park off Cambourne Way.

Families are reminded that parking is not permitted on grassed kerbside areas around the Pre-primary car park and along Tollesbury Avenue, as well as the bricked median strip in Cambourne Parkway or across any footpaths. Parking is also not permitted in bus bays. Please consider the safety of all other road users and pedestrians when parking and leaving schools grounds.

Please also give consideration and respect to owners of properties surrounding the school.

All usual road and parking rules apply around the school and parking fines are issued by rangers (who visit frequently) to those not adhering to the road rules.

School Payment Options Available

Butler Primary School now has eftpos facilities available in the front office!

Payment methods for charges and contributions can now be made via:

  • Eftpos
  • Cash or Cheque (please use the school money envelopes and place the sealed envelope in the black letter boxes. The boxes are located in the wet areas of each of the blocks and the office)

Absentee Messaging Service

Due to the ease of this service, the sending of a text message to Butler Primary School to notify us of your child/ren’s absence has been embraced by many families. Please send absentee messages through to 0419 091 075 with all of the following details so we can correctly update student records:

  • Full name of your child/children
  • Reason for absence
  • Date of absence

Absences can also be phoned through to the office on 9562 1804.

As per Department of Education policy, it is the parent’s responsibility to notify the school of the reason for your child’s absence/s within three days of the absence. Failure to do this will mean that the absence will be marked as “unacceptable reason” affecting your child’s education and attendance record.

Students Arriving Late

Any student arriving late to school, after the siren sounds at 8.35am, will need to enter the school through the front office to collect a late note which is to be given to their class teacher.

Update Student Contact Information

If you have recently changed mobile numbers or moved address, it is important you update your contact information with the office. Please also advise if there is a change to any of your emergency contact information.

Donating Uniforms

Butler Primary School is seeking donations of uniforms, including polo shirts, dresses and suitable navy bottoms, especially in sizes 8-12. If you are able to assist please drop the clean clothing at the front office.

From the Library

We have had a very successful Term 1, introducing Kindy students to borrowing and Year 4 students to the Lexile reading program.

We continue to restock the Butler Primary School library, which is a costly task. So, it is important that books are cared for and returned in the condition in which they were borrowed.

Parents please ensure your child has a library bag which will keep borrowed books dry and clean, so that the books can be borrowed by another child. Unfortunately, if books are returned damaged or soiled, you will be invoiced for the replacement cost.

We wish you all a relaxing and safe school holiday.

Mrs Pengelly and Mrs Dowrick

Chaplain’s Corner

HI Everyone,

I hope you are well, and you enjoyed your Easter break. Hopefully it was restful for you and you were able to take time out from your busy schedules.

This brings us to the end of Term 1, already! Wow!

Well done on all your hard work and all you have achieved and learnt throughout the term. I hope you have reached the goals you set for yourself, and can now celebrate your successes.

As we move in to the holidays, let’s take a moment to remember our school’s Core Values –

Integrity, Community, Aspire, Respect & Responsibility.

Ask your children about these, what they have learnt and how they describe these values. As a family you could talk about which ones are most important to you, the role of having values in our lives and your own personal core values and beliefs.

I wish you all a happy holiday. Keep safe, look after one another and I’ll see you in Term 2.

Kind regards,
Ms Hunter
