A Note from the Principal
As Term 3 draws to a close I to continue to see fantastic developments happening in our classrooms due to the hard work of our teachers. Staff are always looking at ways to improve what they do. They are continually talking to their colleagues about teaching and learning, seeking feedback from others and talking to their students about what interests them.
It has been an extremely busy term with NAPLAN, interm swimming lessons, Book Week, Science Week, athletics carnivals and Year 6 camp.
Our Twilight Family Night on Thursday 6th September was a huge success. I felt extremely proud and privileged to be the principal of such a wonderful school. The effort of our students and staff and the support of the community is to be celebrated. Noel Nannup presented a very moving Welcome to Country and then had the audience enthralled with his Aboriginal astronomical dreamtime stories. The school choir entertained us all, before the rest of the school joined in with community singing. We were lucky to have a clear sky for some of the evening and many children and adults made use of the telescopes which were on loan from ECU and the Astronomical society, managing to get a clear view of some stars and planets. The open classrooms and artwork on display was a huge credit to the students and staff. Many parents made a donation to purchase their child’s artwork, raising over $2000 for drought affected farming families. A huge thank you to the school staff and the hundreds of families who supported the evening. Please see below for some of the photos taken during the evening.
Wishing you all a safe and relaxing holiday break.

Mrs Julie Woodhouse
Principal

Notices for all Parents
Arriving Late
Students arriving late to school, after the siren sounds at 8.35am, need to enter the school through the front office to collect a late note which is to be given to their class teacher. This will help alleviate the problem of parents receiving an SMS at 10.00am advising that their child is absent when in fact they are at school.
|
2019 School Planning Parents please advise the school front office as soon as possible if your child/children will not be attending Butler PS in 2018. Thank you |

A friendly reminder to all families that no dogs are permitted on School grounds at any time.

One Big Voice 2018
On Friday 17th August, a very excited group of students known as the Butler Primary School Choir performed as part of One Big Voice at the Perth Arena. They arrived by train and went straight into rehearsals where they practised with other school choirs for the very first time.

After ironing out the wrinkles in each song in rehearsals, students earned a well-deserved, break. They met new students just like them and watched the Young Talent performance. Then it was time - 7:00pm came around just like that! Parents, family and teachers found their seats, eager with excitement to experience the epic showcase.

The One Big Voice Choir’s repertoire included:
- One Big Voice
- Smile
- The World
- Raining
- Coming Home
- Pelican
- A Child of This World
- Skye Boat
- Tomorrow Needs Us
- We Celebrate – Congratulations to Salvo on his solo in this song!
- This Is Me
A huge thank you goes to the following people –
- Ms Jones – Thank you for all your help on the floor, assisting the choir all night!
- Our wonderful parent helpers – Mrs Pierce, Ms Thomas and Ms Young. Thank you for your commitment and being there for our choir.
- The One Big Voice Committee and Donna Marwick O’Brien for making this magical night happen.
- And to the students and their parents for getting up early, each Friday, to get to rehearsals. It couldn’t have happened without your dedication and love of singing. A BIG thank you from me! And by the way, your behaviour was outstanding!!

Space Rocks for Year Threes
During Week 7 the Year Three students were very lucky to have an incursion with Julie Boston and Brad Mettham from ECU. The students learned how to use geologist hand lenses whilst making observations about rocks. They learned about meteoroid, meteors and meteorites. The students were able to observe and hold a meteorite that was 1.7 billion years old. The students made either a Chondrite or Pallasite (type of meteorites) using materials brought from ECU. The students were very engaged and asked some insightful questions. Ms Boston was amazed at how good the standard of some of their observations and drawings were. The Year Three students thoroughly enjoyed the incursion and learning about space rocks.

Surf Safe Online Workshops
Do you want to know what your child is doing online?
On the 17 October 2018 Butler Primary School will be hosting an Online Safety workshop provided by online safety expert, Paul Litherland from Surf Safe Online.
Year Five and Six students will attend student workshops during the day and a special parent workshop will be held in the evening. Parents are invited to attend this workshop for free; however, seats are limited and tickets will be provided on a first come first serve basis.
Paul Litherland is a knowledgeable and experienced presenter with great reputation who is highly sought after in the educational community. He has been presenting Online Safety workshops for the past 5 years, going from 5 schools to over 400 schools and organisations across Australia. Paul’s presentations are age appropriate and up-to-date with all the relevant information and research into Online Safety. He presented to our students and staff last year and they were all impressed with his captivating style and knowledge base and also his sense of humour.
The parent session is available to any parent or caregiver who is interested in knowing more about the most effective ways to keep your child safe in the online environment. The workshops are incredibly worthwhile and we encourage as many parents and caregivers to attend as possible. Bring your smartphones because you are going to want to change some settings once you hear what Paul has to say. A notebook would also be worthwhile to jot down all the safety tips he provides. More information regarding these workshops will be sent out early in Term Four. This is an evening not to be missed!
For more information about Paul and his presentation please visit the Surf Safe Online Website at:

Smiling Minds Workshop
At Butler Primary School we prioritise student wellbeing. Just as we teach kids to eat well and stay fit to keep their bodies healthy, we teach children how to proactively care for their minds through daily mindfulness activities in each classroom across the school.
Our students have busy, overstimulated lives, with times of stress in school and in the home. Without being taught, many children have difficulty regulating their emotions causing them to be reactive, letting thoughts and emotions drive their actions and behaviour. Mindfulness teaches children to manage their thoughts and actions and instead of reacting, thinking in circles or repeating old habits, they learn to choose to act in ways that are clear, positive and empowered.
Research has shown that mindfulness meditation strategies can:
- improve learning readiness by enhancing working memory, processing and the ability to focus on tasks,
- encourage brain development in areas important for cognitive and emotional processing and wellbeing,
- reduce anxiety, increase optimism, improve attention and reduce aggression.
Staff are currently training to use the Smiling Mind program with students to further enhance students behaviour and wellbeing. An eight weeks study into the Smiling Mind program found that students who participated in the program reported significant improvements in sleep, engagement with school, and reductions in classroom disruptions and bullying. They also noted improvements in emotional wellbeing and a marked reduction in psychological distress, especially for those students who were more at-risk for anxiety.
As part of the training, parents are invited to attend a free parent workshop to provide them with strategies and tools to use at home.
Date: Wednesday 10th October 2018
Time: 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm
Location: Butler Primary School
Seats for this event are limited so please return the slip attached to the note that was sent home by this Friday 21st September if you wish to attend.
You can read more information about the Smiling Mind program at the following link:

Book Week
Butler Primary School enjoyed another fun filled week of literary excitement during Book Week. The theme for 2018 was “Find Your Treasure” and students enjoyed many treasured filled moments throughout the week.
Perform Education entertained the pre-primary to Year 3 students with an exciting musical play entitled “Treasure Hunt”. The performance was based upon several of the 2018 Children’s Book Council Short List of Books.
Students from Year 4 to Year 6 enjoyed another outstanding workshop with Jason from KaBOOM! Toons. Jason is an animation artist who has worked for Disney and we have been very blessed to have come and share his expertise with the students.
The library was bursting with students ‘guessing the book’ every day during the week. Teachers left clues to well-known texts and the students used their skills and knowledge to work out what each one was. A lucky winner was drawn and announced daily. It was great to see so many students enthusiastically participating and, even better, to see so many getting the right answers.
Thursday’s Mad Hatter’s Tea Party was another exciting event. The school was filled with creative hats and families enjoying a picnic with each other. This is an event that the students look forward to each year and is a great opportunity for families to join in the fun and atmosphere of Book Week.
Friday, the last day of Book Week was such an exciting day! Students and teachers delighted in dressing up for the day as their favourite story character.
Winners of the Book Cover Competition and the Book Raffle were announced to much applause.
The staff enjoyed presenting their performance that they had been secretly rehearsing over the last few weeks. The theme of the play revolved how The Twits came to be the ugly human beings they are. It was a cautionary tale of how we treat others and how this reflects upon ourselves. It was debatable who had more fun –the actors or the audience! Acting and dancing talent shone brightly and for just a little while the students seemed to be part of the fairy tale…
Thank you to the Book Week committee, teachers and the talented actors for their efforts in producing a Book Week that was so magical and engaging to our students.
Thank you Woolworths Butler
Last year Woolworths provided Butler Primary School with a very generous donation after our Choir performed at the opening of their Butler store last year. We would like to acknowledge this donation and say a very big THANK YOU as it has enabled our school to purchase new Lego kits for the Year 3 Lego/Science Club. The new Lego adds to the kits the students use for challenges and for building onto Edisons. It will enable them to use their imagination, creativity and problem solving skills in new and exciting ways.
The donation has also assisted the Music program by purchasing headphones which will provide students with the opportunity to have individual practise on the keyboards along with purchasing Kazoos to help students develop their in voice whilst having some fun!
In addition our Library was able to purchase a number of new books. To read about the exciting new titles in the Library, please refer to the ‘From the Library’ section of this newsletter.

Room D6 Poetry Assembly - 16 August 2018
Wondrous poetry! As Robert Frost said, “Poetry is when an emotion has found its thought and the thought has found words.”
On Thursday, 16th August D6 had the pleasure of hosting the Junior Assembly. We have learnt that poems are designed to be read aloud, allowing us to tune in to rhythm and sound. They help build awareness of the world, different cultures or eras, expose us to abstract ideas and engage with words in different combinations. The students had fun dressing up and performing the poem The Magic Box by Kit Wright. They then shared some of their own innovations where they demonstrated the use of powerful, well-chosen words, alliteration, similes and personification. We discovered imagination will take us everywhere! D6 then got their dance moves out to I’ve Got this Feeling. The children are to be congratulated for enjoying their special day and for speaking so clearly into the microphone.

Room 1 & 2 Assembly - 6 September 2018
On Thursday 6th of September, it was Room 1 and Room 2’s assembly. The Pre-Primaries were there to watch as the children perform their assembly based on the Twilight Family Night event. Room 2 began with some information detailing what would be happening that evening. Then they sang The Planet Song and told some awesome facts about planets. Room 1 performed the dreamtime story, Where the Stars Came From. Congratulations on a wonderful assembly Room 1 and Room 2, you are all STARS!

Room 5 Assembly - 30 August 2018
On Thursday 30th August, Room 5 performed an interpretation of the story “The Wrong Book” which was shortlisted on the Children’s Booklist Awards for 2010. This was in honour of another fantastic Book Week we had all experienced the previous week. The Year Sixes shared some amazing facts about the benefits of reading for 15 minutes a day. Some of these facts were:
- Between kindergarten and twelfth grade, students with an average daily reading time of 30+ minutes will encounter 13.7 million words. At graduation, their peers who averaged less than 15 minutes of reading per day are likely to be exposed to only 1.5 million words. That’s a difference of more than 12 million words.
- If you read just 15 minutes a day — every day, for one year — you can complete 20 books!
- If you read just one book per month for 12 straight months, you will be in the top 25 percentile of all intellectuals in the world!
- Einstein said that if a person studies a subject for just 15 minutes a day in a year he will be an expert, and in five years he may be a national expert.
Room 5 performed amazingly and spoke with character and expression. They performed their very last assembly item with enthusiasm and I was very proud of them.

WHAT’S ON IN….
Physical Education
What a busy year it has been for the Butler sports program.
The years sporting calendar kicked off with the continuation of the Sporting Schools Program for the Year 5 and 6 students. During Term 1 students from Year 6 were offered the opportunity to participate in a volleyball clinic run by Volleyball WA. The clinic was a great success with all students enjoying the Volleyball activities and participating in a full game of volleyball by the end of the clinic.
During Term 2, 20 of our Year 5 students were invited to participate in an Indoor Lawn Bowls program. Students had the opportunity to practice and develop their lawn bowls skills over a number of weeks focusing on correct skills and game play. By the end of the clinic a number of students were demonstrating a natural talent for the game.
At the beginning of May the students from Years 4–6 participated in the Butler Primary School Cross Country Carnival. It was great to see all students finish the course, earning a point for their faction. The top five boys and girls were invited to join Butler Primary School Cross Country Team. This team had been training Thursday mornings and afternoons with Mr. Piperis and Ms. Banfield. The state cross Country Carnival was held early in Term 3 at the UWA’s Sports Park in Nedlands, where we competed against schools from around WA.
Term 3 also saw the Butler Primary School Athletics Carnival. On Friday, 31st of August the school oval was inundated with all Butler Primary School students competing in a variety of athletics based activities to see which faction will take out this year’s championship trophy. We had a great turn out on the day with lots of people enjoying the cakes from the Parents and Citizens cake stall. Gemini won the carnival this year. Well done Gemini!
Week 8 saw the Interschool Athletics Carnival being held at Quinns Beach Primary and Alkimos Beach Primary School. Butler competed against four other local schools in athletic based activities. Over the course of the two days Butler came in second place, with a number of our students taking home the champion boys and girls medallions. Go Butler!

PP5 Kindy
Term Three has been a very busy and exciting one for everyone in PP5. To begin the Term we looked at several traditional stories and practised different ways of retelling and dramatizing these stories. We explored the characters, setting and problems of the stories and also created stories of our own. From Week Four we have had several farm animal visits to our classroom as we explore the Theme of Farm. We have enjoyed bottle feeding lambs and kid goats and observing the changes in chickens and ducklings as they grow. In Week Seven we invited our Dads and Grandads to come to Kindy for an afternoon of interactive activities. It was a wonderful opportunity for Dads and Grandads to see the things that we are learning about. During this term we were also looking at the Theme of Space as we prepared for the Twilight Family Night.

Chaplain’s Corner
HELLO Everyone,
I hope you and your family are doing well and that you have enjoyed this very eventful term! We have had many things to celebrate and enjoy together as a school community. And now with the school holidays here, we can take the time to reflect on all we have achieved, and enjoy some rest and relaxation.
Last week, Thursday 13th September was R U OK? DAY. Our national day of action dedicated to reminding everyone that any day is the day to ask “R U OK?” and support someone struggling with life. Let us be looking out for one another, and taking a moment to stop and ask those around us how they are.

Our core school VALUES which we focus on are: COMMUNITY, ASPIRE, INTEGRITY, RESPECT and RESPONSIBILITY.
Values are the qualities within us which influence how we live our lives and how we treat one another. We work hard at school to teach values to our students, hoping to instil qualities within them that will help them to live good lives, treat others as they would want to be treated and be the best they can be.

Wishing you all a safe and happy holiday!
See you in Term 4.

Fremantle Ports Maritime Day – Saturday, 27th October
The Company of Master Mariners of Australia and Fremantle Ports in association with the Department of Transport Marine Safety Business Unit and Royal Australian Navy will once again celebrate Maritime Day with a special open day to highlight the role of the maritime industry in Western Australia.
Fremantle Ports Maritime Day gives young people and community an opportunity to learn more about the employment, training and educational opportunities available within the maritime industry as well as being a fun, family orientated community event. Last year, it was estimated that over 15,000 people attended.
The open day will be held in B Shed on Victoria Quay, Fremantle on Saturday 27 October from 10am to 4pm.
