A Note from the Principal

It was very pleasing to see our students looking bright eyed and enthusiastic on the first day back this term and it is hard to believe that we are nearly half way through term 3.

At the heart of our drive for continuous improvement is the development of a ‘high performance – high care culture”.

In building such a culture in our school we will continue to embed our core values of respect, responsibility, aspire, integrity and community in everything we do. Taking this approach means every teacher-student interaction becomes an opportunity to promote our values and to develop a shared understanding of what each value means. Butler Primary School teachers are aware of the potential their interactions and behaviour have to influence the mental health and resiliency of our students.

Continually the Staff at Butler Primary School try to impress upon the students the importance of respect and the notion of emotional intelligence. We do this because we strongly believe that one of the most important things we can teach our students is respect and managing their emotions.

“Values such as respect are the seeds from which all behaviour grows.”

This quote drives our agenda to ensure Butler Primary School is ‘value-centred’ and respect is threefold – respect for self; respect for others; and; respect for our place / our school community.

Research clearly shows that students who demonstrate compassion, respect, responsibility, perseverance, initiative, and integrity have parents/mentors who demonstrate these qualities on a regular basis.

The best way for us to teach respect to our students is to show respect. When a student experiences respect, they know what it feels like and begin to understand how important it is.

Respect is a valued attitude. Being respectful helps a student succeed in life. If students don't have respect for peers, authority, or themselves, it can be difficult for them to succeed.

How can we show respect?

  • Be honest - If you do something wrong, admit it and apologise.
  • Be positive - Don't embarrass, insult or make fun of others. Compliment them.
  • Be trusting - Make choices and take responsibility.
  • Be fair - Listen to others before reaching a conclusion.
  • Be polite - Use "please" and "thank you".
  • Be reliable - Keep promises. Show that you mean what you say.
  • Be a good listener - Give others your full attention.
  • Follow the rules.
  • Be caring - Show concern for people, animals and the environment.
  • Avoid poor role models - When you see examples of disrespect, discuss them.
  • Respect yourself. Self-respect is one of the essential forms of respect. Once we appreciate ourselves, it is easier to respect others.

Every member of staff has a contribution to make to this culture and we will be seeking feedback on how we are going early in Term 4. We will be utilising the National School Opinion Survey and will seek feedback from staff, students and parents. More information will be given towards the end of Term 3.

Notice to all Parents

Students arriving late to school after the siren sounds at 8.35am, need to enter the school through the front office to collect a late note which is to be given to their class teacher. This will help alleviate the problem of parents receiving an SMS at 10.00am advising that their child is absent when in fact they are at school.

2019 School Planning

Parents please advise the school front office as soon as possible if your child/children will not be attending Butler Primary School in 2018. Thank you.

IT’S NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK!

This week is National Science Week. The theme is “Game Changers and Game Makers.”

Butler Primary is currently celebrating this great event in a number of ways. Scitech visited on Wednesday 15th August to present their wonderful shows. Pre-Primary to Year 2 enjoyed the show “Move it” and the Year 3 to 6 experienced the show “Prove it.”

The students have also been involved in Science activity rotations as well as a STE[A]M challenge in their classes.

NAIDOC WEEK, 25–29 June 2018

In Week 9 of Term 2 the students at Butler PS celebrated NAIDOC Week. The NAIDOC theme for 2018 was ‘Because of Her, We Can’ – celebrating the role of Indigenous women in Australia.

The week started off with an exciting visit from the West Coast Eagles Mascot ‘Ric the Rock Eagle’ and his friend Bradd, who spoke to students about being resilient and living a healthy lifestyle. We were joined by Rikki Ryan, a WA State Representative women’s football star that plays AFLW for Swan Districts. Rikki shared some football skills and tips with our Year 1-6 students. We were joined by staff and students from Edith Cowan University who shared Aboriginal Culture through sports and games. Jason Barrow, Caroline Bishop, Gail Barrow and Jacob Blurton taught our students games that Aboriginal children played many years ago, and shared some cultural knowledge with us – it was amazing!

As a whole school, our students learnt about the Noongar Dreaming story ‘The Wagyl’. We created fence art murals of the Wagyl around our school. The week was full of sharing, appreciating and respecting Aboriginal culture and perspectives at Butler PS. It was a moorditj (great) week!

MUSIC ACTIVE PROGRAM

During term two, Year 5 and 6 students participated in several song writing workshops lead by Music Active facilitators Chris Gibbs and Andrew Thompson. Each student played a vital role in composing their class’s original lyrics. They all played a different role on the performance night, exploring some of the different jobs in the music industry.

During rehearsals, students focused on playing instruments, fine-tuning lyrics for verses and choruses, advertising, choreography, lighting and sound. Each class also had representatives participating in a “Q&A” session.

Q&A

The Year 5 students performed their songs on Tuesday 26th June and the Year 6 students on Wednesday 27th June at Butler College.

Our school was very lucky to use the college’s Performing Arts Centre (PAC) to unveil their songs to family and friends. A huge thank you goes out to the amazing staff and students at Butler College –

  • Mr Paul Johnson (Head of Music)and his Cert II class for the floor setup
  • Ms Megan Beadle (Art Teacher)
  • Barry Rose (Associate Principal)
  • Ms Ruth Vargas (Drama Teacher) for letting us use her room
  • Chloe Diggins (Year 12 student) for filming the concert on the Wednesday night

A huge thank you also goes out to our school’s P&C for donating money towards subsidising this program. It wouldn’t have been possible without your generosity.

Congratulations to Room 14, 15, 16, 17, 5, 6, 7 and 8 for their hard work in creating their songs and bringing it all together on the night. Thank you for your efforts!

Room 3 and Room 4’s Assembly, 21 June 2018

The Indonesian Language

The Year One students of Room 3 and Room 4 did a fantastic job with their assembly in Week 8 of Term 2. They showcased the Indonesian facts, words and phrases they have learnt so far this year. The students sang songs they have learnt to help them remember the main islands of Indonesia, how to ask somebody what their name is and how to greet people in Indonesian. They were able to tell us how they were feeling in Indonesian and the students spoke about the importance of learning about different cultures. They performed a song named, ‘Hello to All the Children of the World.’ Wow, amazing job Year Ones. Well done for speaking so clearly in the microphone.

Room 12 Assembly, 26 July 2018

On Thursday the 26th July, Room 12 performed their very persuasive assembly to a captivated audience. As the Year Four students are learning all about persuasive texts this term, our class performed a dramatic retelling of the story “The Day the Crayons Quit.” The story tells of a boy’s box of crayons sending him letters with their grievances about how he uses them. Most of them are fed up and are trying to convince him to use them differently. Room 12 performed amazingly and spoke with character and expression. They were able to persuade the audience and convince them all that it was the best assembly of the year!

Room 16 Assembly, 2 August 2018

On Thursday 2nd August it was Room 16’s Assembly. The students expressed their joy of reading and by using the Lexile Reading program at school they are able to read a wide range of wonderful stories every day. As the students have been learning about Poetry this term they performed a fantastic poem by Roald Dahl called ‘Television’. The poem expressed the importance of reading in a fun and enjoyable way. The students then read aloud their own class poem called ‘Imagination’ that they had written together. The students had a wonderful time on stage! The parents, grandparents and visitors enjoyed morning tea in our classroom after the Assembly.

WHAT’S ON IN….

YEAR 4 - Persuasive Writing

This term as part of our English focus, the students in Year Four have been looking at Persuasive Texts. Over the past four weeks we have read a variety of texts in class, two of the most popular books have been ‘I Wanna Iguana’ and ‘I Wanna New Room’ written by Karen Kaufman Orloff.

Throughout weekly English lessons, students have looked at persuasive writing techniques used to convince readers to believe or agree with a certain point of view, such as; stating opinion, powerful openers, time connectives and strong language.

Each week, the Year Four students have been given a different persuasive topic that they need to think about and discuss with peers in their class to form their own individual view point. Every Friday during Big Writing lessons, students are encouraged to come up with strong reasons to support their argument and try to convince their parents, peers and teachers to agree with their point of view as they write persuasive arguments.

Over the past four weeks we have discussed important topics such as, Should we have a class pet?, Is it cruel to keep animals in a zoo? And why your parents should give you a new room? The Year Fours have worked hard during English lessons to learn the persuasive techniques and apply them effectively into their own writing, producing very strong arguments to convince readers and their peers to agree with their opinion.

We are sure to see some more amazing and very convincing persuasive texts from our Year Fours as the term progresses.

From the Library

Two Butler Primary students recently wrote to their favourite author, to compliment him on his series of books. After receiving the letters and drawings from the brothers, Tim Cahill sent a written reply and sent a video reply.

Tim Cahill’s football career is amazing. He has been called Australia’s greatest Socceroo of all time. In his 14 year international career, he has represented Australia 107 times and scored 50. Most of his club football has been played overseas, particularly in the English Premier League for Millwall and Everton. He has also played in the United States and China. He has scored an amazing 168 club goals!

Not only is Tim a great author, but an outstanding sportsman in every sense of the word.

Congratulations Jayden and Taj for writing your letters and choosing an amazing role model.
