A Note from the Principal

It’s amazing to see that the end of the 2018 school year is coming to a close. I want to thank you all for all the support and patience shown throughout the year. We have had successes and some challenges, yet despite all, we continued the work that had to be done. Together we’ve learned much and shared many experiences.

Special thanks to all of you who have contributed in ways small, large and unimaginable! So many of you have supported our work in countless ways and contributed to the P&C to provide additional resources to do what we dream and know is good for children. Thanks for getting your children to school on time each day, for kind notes of encouragement that mean so much, for sending your kids with healthy lunches obviously packed with love, for making sure homework gets done… and handed in. Thank you for providing rich and engaging, well-rounded experiences for your children and knowing that education is about joy, wonder and fostering curiosity, along with the development of social skills so needed to succeed. For these, and a million other things, the Staff at Butler are truly grateful.

To those of you who are leaving us for new places and adventures, we wish you all the best. Congratulations to our very capable Year 6 students who are venturing onto a new stage in their academic career!

And, best-wishes, albeit with saddened hearts, to Mrs Liz Marsh, Ms Lee Cox, Mrs Elisa Witt, Ms Vangi Hunter, Ms Vanessa Connor, Ms Tegan Letcher, Ms Danelle Stewart, Mrs Maddie McCormick, Mrs Melanie Gouges and Mrs Erica de La Motte as they move to embrace retirement, parenthood or new locations and positions. Butler Primary School has been extremely lucky to have had such outstanding professionals as part of our team.

I would like to congratulate Mrs Marsh and Ms Cox on their retirement and thank them for being a source of encouragement and enthusiasm to both staff and students. I’m sure they don’t realise how many lives they have touched at Butler Primary School. Their classrooms are a place of exploration, where learning is more than memorizing facts. Their love of learning is contagious and this encouraged their students to explore the unknown, take risks and learn from mistakes. The students are not the only ones who have benefited from their outstanding teaching ability. They have mentored and positively influenced other staff and have taught many people (including pre-service teachers) what it means to be a teacher. For this we are very grateful.

As we farewell some of our staff we will also be welcoming Mrs Emily Brown and Ms Isabelle Thompson to Butler Primary School in 2019.

It is with great pleasure that I announce and welcome Mrs Lucy Malins, Ms Bec Young and Mrs Kellie Holland as our new Board members for 2019.

Student reports will be emailed on Tuesday 11th December and class lists for 2019 will be displayed on Wednesday 12th December. The class lists are subject to change depending on any variations in enrolments.

2018 has been a fantastic year. Our commitment to continuous improvement has helped us to remain focused on the things that are important. We have reviewed many of our programs including spelling and writing and have worked hard to embed our school values (respect, responsibility, integrity, community and aspire) in everything that we do.

I wish you all a very merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.

Mrs Julie Woodhouse
Principal

Academic Enrichment

On Monday 3rd December, parents were invited to attend a special award ceremony at Butler College, celebrating the outstanding commitment and participation of students taking part in our Academic Enrichment Program. Our close partnership with Butler College enhances the connection between primary and high school and allows our students to become immersed in the college community prior to beginning high school while further developing their love of learning and academic achievement.

This year, Year 5 and 6 teachers, along with the administration team, have walked students to the college each Monday afternoon and college teachers have run academic extension programs in Science and English. These highly successful programs have been specifically designed to ignite curiosity, enhance problem-solving and broaden the perspective of how knowledge can be applied in creative and exploratory ways. Students have had the opportunity to explore the facilities of the college, work in science labs and perform in the school theatre.

Next year the program will be expanded to include Mathematics as well as Science and English, further enhancing our student's opportunities to engage in exciting learning opportunities and achieve aspirational goals.

Congratulations to our first cohort of students who took part in this exciting and valuable learning experience and thank you to the parents who committed to supporting their children and our school. Your attendance at the award ceremony and throughout the year has been appreciated by the students, Butler College and Butler Primary School.

EDU-Dance

EDU-Dance has been a hit with our Year 4, 3/4 and 5 students who have described the program as one of the highlights of the 2018 school year.

EDU-Dance is a creative hip-hop dance program designed for primary school students. It provides children with the opportunity to be part of a fun and energetic dance program, learn exciting hip-hop routines and perform to their own school community.

Parents who attended the performance on Tuesday 4th December were treated to an outstanding performance by our talented students.

“I just wanted to say how impressed I was with the EDU-Dance performance today. Our son loved practicing every week and has great things to say about Mrs Brown. I was really looking forward to watching this afternoon but it was even better than I expected. All the classes left the stage absolutely beaming and it was a pleasure to witness.”

Comment from the parent community

Well done to all of the students that participated and thank you to the parents that attended the performance. Your presence and support means a lot to the students and our school.

PP1 and PP2 Assembly - 22 November 2018

On Thursday, 22 November PP1 and PP2 hosted the assembly. This Term we have been learning about Community and “special places” and our theme was based on the book “I’m Australian Too” by Mem Fox. As Butler is a culturally diverse community we wanted to embrace our diversity as well as well as celebrating how we come together as Australians.

The assembly was opened by Lawson Barrow who welcomed us and acknowledged that we are on Whadjak Nyoongar Country, in both Nyoongar language and in English. Many of the students had the opportunity to share why they love Australia and the flags from their “home” country. The students performed “We Are Australian” and they did a fantastic job of learning all the words and actions.

The students were dressed in outfits that represented their “home” country or Australia and they all looked fantastic!

PP3 Assembly – 29 November 2018

On Thursday, 29 November it was PP3’s assembly. The theme of the assembly item was Christmas. The students began with a hilarious song about Santa being stuck in the chimney. They then tried lots of things to get Santa out, including sliding him out with butter and tickling him. The students then entertained the audience with their amazing singing of the ’12 Aussie Days of Christmas’. The assembly concluded with students saying what they liked about Christmas and then by singing ‘Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer’. The students sang beautifully and spoke so clearly. What a wonderful performance!

WHAT’S ON IN…

Visual Arts

Years 1 and 2

Years 1 and 2 have recently been looking at the Cubist artwork of Pablo Picasso for inspiration. Cubism is "an early 20th-century style and movement in art, especially painting, in which perspective with a single viewpoint was abandoned and use was made of simple geometric shapes, interlocking planes, and later, collage."

Our students worked hard over a number of weeks to create a series of self-portraits that included both realistic and Cubist interpretations. Student feedback for these lessons included that they enjoyed working on their art for a longer period of time, and loved making something 'weird'!

Some of this artwork is currently displayed in the front office.

Year 1 and 2 Art Specialist

Years 3 to 6

This year has seen the continuation of the emergence of many budding artists at Butler, who have produced some amazing pieces of art throughout 2018!

The Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 students have all worked enthusiastically, acquired a variety of new art skills and produces some wonderful creations!!! They have all contributed towards displays for Harmony Day, Anzac Day, Naidoc Week and the Family Twilight Night.

The students have enjoyed painting, collage, mosaics, working with clay, investigating "Lines", marbling, printmaking, using chalk and oil pastels, puppet making and sewing, to name just a few projects! Their lessons have been programmed in collaboration with the year group team leaders, to ensure the activities are integrated with class themes as much as possible.

Please enjoy here, a sample of the students' masterpieces. You are also, always welcome to visit the art room and the front office, where students' work is regularly displayed.

Here's to celebrating more bright, creative and colourful artistic successes in 2019!!! Well done kids. You are all shining stars!!!

HELLO Everyone,

I hope you are well and looking forward to the end of term and the holidays ahead.

It’s hard to believe another school year has come to an end. I hope it has been a happy and successful one for you. CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE on all your hard work and all you have achieved during 2018!

Now it’s time to slow down and enjoy preparing for the Festive Season.

CHRISTMAS - What meaning does the season hold for you and your family?

A time of giving. A time of sharing. A time of being together with loved ones. A time to celebrate the birth of Jesus. A time to be still and reflect on the blessings in our lives.

I hope Christmas will be a time of Peace, Love and Joy for you. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

I would like to take this opportunity to let you know that I will be moving on from Butler PS at the end of this year. Having been here for over 10 years, this has not been an easy decision for me to make. There will be a wonderful new chaplain taking over from me and I know you will make her welcome.

I want to say a HUGE THANK YOU to each and every one for your support, friendship and love throughout my time here. It has been an honour and a privilege serving this community. May you all continue to grow together to achieve great things. Please continue to look after one another and support one another. I will miss you dearly and you will always be in my thoughts and prayers.

Have a safe and happy holiday!

COLOUR RUN

Our inaugural Colour Run was a huge success! Not only did everyone have a great time but approximately $7000 was raised to help revamp the Undercover Area. We would like to sincerely thank:

All the volunteers who assisted on the day.
Coles Butler for donating the sausages.
Joondalup Police Station, WA Police.
Woolworths Butler and McDonalds for donating prizes.
Reece Salkilld for assisting with setup.
Year 6 students for all their help.
Andrew Fooks, Reece Salkilld and the Admin Team for cooking and preparing the Sausage Sizzle.
DJ Dench.

And all the families of Butler for your amazing fundraising efforts!

THANK YOU

The P&C would like to take this opportunity to thank all the families at BPS who have participated in fundraising activities or volunteered at events throughout the year. All fundraising activities are run entirely by volunteers and without your help the P&C simply could not exist.

The P&C’s fundraising activities exist to provide opportunities for students and families to participate and have fun, while also aiming to improve morale and contribute towards the financial goals of the association. All money raised from fundraising efforts are used to purchase resources and materials that directly benefit the students, or are donated directly to the school for the same purpose.

This year the P&C hosted a total of 13 fundraisers, including the Crazy Hair Disco in Term 2, Family Portrait Day in Term 3, and the Colour Run in Term 4. This year we have raised over $27,000 which has been used to purchase faction banners and flags for the sports carnivals, graduation gifts, wobbly stools, jelly bean tables, subsidising of music programs and to contribute towards the renovations of the undercover area.

Thank you to everyone who has participated in our fundraising events during the 2018 school year. 2019 is sure to be another fantastic year and we have lots of exciting activities planned.

The P&C wishes everybody a safe and happy Christmas and holiday period.
