A Note from the Principal

Welcome back to all our staff, students and families for the beginning of a new school term. Term 4 is always busy, yet exciting with a number of important school events leading up to the end of the school year.

2018 WORLD TEACHERS’ DAY

This year, World Teachers Day in Australia is being celebrated on Friday, 26 October in recognition of the contribution teachers make to education across the globe. Research states that the most important element that makes a difference to student outcomes is the teacher. Celebrated in over 100 countries, World Teachers’ Day was inaugurated on 5 October 1994 by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to commemorate the 1966 joint signing of the UNESCO/ILO (International Labour Organisation) recommendation concerning the status of teachers. In adopting this recommendation, governments unanimously recognised the importance of competent, qualified and motivated teachers in society. Internationally World Teachers’ Day is celebrated on the first Friday in October. However, as this is usually during Australian school holidays, Australia celebrates the day on the last Friday in October of each year. In our rapidly changing and interdependent world, teachers not only have to ensure that students acquire solid skills in basic subjects, but also that they become responsible local and global citizens, at ease with new technologies and able to make informed decisions about health, the environment and other challenges. It would be wonderful if we all could show our appreciation of our teachers on the 26 October 2018.

From Butler Primary School, with love: Fundraising for drought affected Tullamore

A huge thank you to our generous families and friends for supporting our efforts to help the drought affected area of Tullamore in NSW. We raised over $2000 and this money will be transferred to Tullamore Central School to support the school to access relevant incursions and excursions and student personal items that families cannot afford due to their income being compromised by the drought.

Tullamore Central School continuously looks for innovative solutions to address the needs of isolated students and we are hopeful that our sister school partnership will open up exciting opportunities for us all.

Notices for all Parents

Arriving Late

Students arriving late to school, after the siren sounds at 8.35am, need to enter the school through the front office to collect a late note which is to be given to their class teacher. This will help alleviate the problem of parents receiving an SMS at 10.00am advising that their child is absent when in fact they are at school.

2019 School Planning

Parents please advise the school front office as soon as possible if your child/children will not be attending Butler PS in 2019. Thank you.

School App

Have you downloaded the Butler Primary School App? It is a great way to be notified of school news and events along with quick and easy access to school event information, the school calendar, newsletters, canteen info, absentee notification and more!

Easy to download and easy to use. For instructions on how to install the app visit

https://www.butlerps.wa.edu.au/szapp

School Security

All perimeter gates around the school are locked at 9.00am (except the front gate) and opened at 2.30pm for school pick-up. All gates are locked again at 3.00pm.

During school hours pedestrian entry and exit is only available via the front gate on Tollesbury Avenue.

Butler Primary School Board Nominations

Are you interested in contributing to the governance of Butler Primary School as a parent representative on the School Board? It is anticipated that a minimum of three Parent Representative School Board vacancies will exist from the beginning of 2019. Retiring members are welcome to re-nominate for these positions if they wish. You will need to be a parent at Butler Primary School in 2018/19 to be eligible. Should there be more nominations than vacant positions all parents will be offered the opportunity to vote. Candidates are asked to provide a one page ‘Expression of Interest’ which should address the criteria/questions located on the attached ‘Appendix 1’ as well as a recent photograph.

Members of the Board may hold office for a term not exceeding three years. You can nominate for a 2 year or 3 year tenure. New members will receive an induction and board training in Term 1, 2019. If you are interested, email or supply in writing, using the attached form and your ‘Expression of Interest’ to Julie Woodhouse, julie.woodhouse@education.wa.edu.au by 3:00pm, Wednesday 14th of November.

This program will commence again on Monday 29th October (Week 4). Butler Primary School Staff will walk the students to Butler College and parents are reminded to collect their child from Butler College at 4pm. Please see below the dates for Term 4.

Room 14 Assembly - 18 October 2018

On Thursday 18th October, Room 14 were delighted to perform their assembly based on a daily class challenge of mindfulness, gratitude and kindness. Mindfulness activities are completed throughout Butler Primary School each day to empower students to manage their thoughts and actions in a positive way. Room 14 discussed the importance of practicing mindfulness and improvements it has had towards their learning through enhanced attention and focus on learning tasks. They spoke about expressing gratitude to promote optimistic thinking and joy throughout each experience in their lives. Finally, Room 14 have been working hard to implement one act of kindness each day and discussed the different ways they have been friendly, generous and considerate towards one another. Room 14 demonstrated some excellent dance moves when performing Kindness is a Muscle. The students from Room 14 sung with enthusiasm and all spoke with clarity and expression into the microphone. Congratulations on a brilliant assembly Room 14!

WHAT’S ON IN….

Year 5

This Term the students in Year 5 and 6 had Paul Litherland from Surf Safe online come and present about Cyber Safety. Paul encourages students to take precautions about their online citizenship and teaches them some ways that they can achieve this with apps/ websites currently being used.

With the increasing number of students participating in online activities (over 90% at Butler Primary School) it is important that students received this message. The students in Year 5 followed this up by creating their own internet safety rules that would help them to identify further ways they may stay safe while participating online.

Year 5 Teachers

From the Library

The Library is expecting Book Club Issue 7/2018 orders to be delivered either today or tomorrow. As usual, as soon as they arrive and we have checked the orders, they will be delivered to your child’s classroom.

Our last Book Club for this year will be open from the 7th of November 2018. All orders will be due by Monday the 19th of November 2018.

As we will not be holding a Book Fair this year (see below), this will be the perfect opportunity to purchase, for Christmas, wonderful books at great prices.

The most convenient method to purchase from Scholastic in online through their LOOP ordering system:

https://mybookclubs.scholastic.com.au/Parent/Login.aspx

End of Year Borrowing

The last week of borrowing for all students will be Week 6, 12th to the 16th of November 2018.

All student Library books must be returned to the Library in Week 7, commencing Monday 19th of November 2018. Parents and caregivers of students with lost or overdue Library books will be invoiced for the replacement cost.

Mark your Calendar

The Library will be hosting a Scholastic Book Fair in Term 1, 2019. It will be in Week 7, from the 18th to the 20th of March 2019.

Congratulations

Finally, the Library would like to congratulate one of its own. Library Officer Miss McKenzie Dowrick has been drafted by the Brisbane Lions to play in the 2018/19 AFLW competition. Along with all the staff and students of Butler Primary we will miss her but we are excited for the first bounce down of her first game!

Chaplain’s Corner

WELCOME to Term 4 Everyone!

I hope you enjoyed your holiday and that it was a time of rest and relaxation for you and your family. Now, for our final term of the year! May it be a great one for you and may we all finish the year well together.

Last week marked MENTAL HEALTH WEEK WA, 7th – 14th October. A national week celebrated each year around World Mental Health Day which is on 10th October. The theme this year is all about community and the various settings we go to every day.

‘MENTAL HEALTH STARTS WHERE WE LIVE, LEARN, WORK AND PLAY.’

This week is aimed at increasing mental wellbeing in WA communities by:

  • Encouraging each of us to support and look out for one another
  • Promoting mental health discussion – learning the ‘language’ of expressing feelings, good and bad
  • Continuing to raise awareness of mental health issues and reduce the stigma of seeking help

What can you do today to take care of your mental wellbeing?

(The above information is taken from act belong commit – Mental Health Week 2018).

Wishing you all a successful and happy term ahead!

Kind regards,
Ms Vangi Hunter
School Chaplain
