A Note from the Principal
It’s amazing to see that the end of the 2017 school year is coming to a close. I want to thank you all for all the support and patience shown throughout the year. We have had successes and some challenges, yet despite all, we continued the work that had to be done. Together we’ve learned much and shared many experiences.
Special thanks to all of you who have contributed in ways small, large and unimaginable! So many of you have supported our work in countless ways and contributed to the P&C to provide additional resources to do what we dream and know is good for children. Thanks for getting your children to school on time each day, for kind notes of encouragement that mean so much, for sending your kids with healthy lunches obviously packed with love, for making sure homework gets done… and handed in. Thank you for providing rich and engaging, well-rounded experiences for your children and knowing that education is about joy, wonder and fostering curiosity, along with the development of social skills so needed to succeed. For these, and a million other things, the Staff at Butler are truly grateful.
To those of you who are leaving us for new places and adventures, we wish you all the best. Congratulations to our very capable Year 6 students who are venturing onto a new stage in their academic career!
And, best-wishes, albeit with saddened hearts, to Mrs Margaret Beard, Mr Mark Williams, Mrs Gemma Jones, Mrs Shannan Robinson, Mrs Claire Stevanovski, Ms Rebecca Terry, Ms Gemma Donaldson, Ms Caroline Morgan-Cook and Ms Carol Martin as they move to embrace retirement or new locations and positions. Butler Primary School has been extremely lucky to have had such outstanding professionals as part of our team and with the exception of Mrs Beard, as she is starting a new and exciting retirement adventure, they will undoubtedly be a great asset to their new schools.
I would like to congratulate Mrs Beard on her retirement and thank her for being a source of inspiration and motivation to both staff and students. I’m sure she doesn’t realise how many lives she has touched at Butler Primary School. Her classroom is a place of adventure, where learning is more than memorizing facts. Her love of learning is contagious and this encouraged her students to explore the unknown, take risks and learn from mistakes. Mrs Beard is the consummate ‘teachers’ teacher’. The students are not the only ones who have benefited from her outstanding teaching ability. Mrs Beard has mentored and positively influenced other staff and she has taught many people what it means to be a teacher. For this we are very grateful.
As we farewell some of our staff we will also be welcoming Ms Melissa Wolfenden, Ms Sarah Bilbrough and Ms Danielle Martin to Butler Primary School in 2018.
Student reports will be sent home on Tuesday 12th December and class lists for 2018 will be displayed on Wednesday 13th December. The class lists are subject to change depending on any variations in enrolments.
2017 has been a fantastic year. Our commitment to continuous improvement has helped us to remain focused on the things that are important. We have reviewed many of our programs including spelling and have worked hard to embed our school values (respect, responsibility, integrity, community and aspire) in everything that we do.
Mrs Julie Woodhouse
Principal

Safe Swimming Message to all our Families As summer approaches, we want students and families to enjoy our beautiful waterways; remembering to swim between the flags when at the beach and stay safe around the water. Royal Life Saving’s recently released National Drowning Report shows that 280 people drowned in Australian waterways in 2015-16. This is a five per cent increase from the previous year. Each drowning death is a personal story, affecting families, rescuers and communities. The Department of Education, Royal Life Saving WA and Surf Life Saving WA wish everyone a safe and fun summer holiday. To find out more information about how you can be safe over the Christmas break visit:
With beach weather now here, Surf Life Saving WA is asking you to help your kids find the fun Between The Flags and stay beach safe by downloading their free Safety Beach game to ensure you know all the tips for staying safe between the flags this summer! |

Parents………… Please advise the school front office as soon as possible if your child/children will not be attending Butler PS in 2018. Thank you |

Notice to all Parents Students arriving late to school after the siren sounds at 8.30am, need to enter the school through the front office to collect a late note which is to be given to their class teacher. This will help alleviate the problem of parents receiving an SMS at 10.00am advising that their child is absent when in fact they are at school. |

IMMS BAND WORKSHOP
FRIDAY 24TH, NOVEMBER, 2017
On Friday, 24th of November the Year 5 & 6 IMSS brass, woodwind and percussion students participated in a band workshop at Butler College. They attended different music workshops and performed in a concert for their parents to finish off the day.
Here are some reviews from our clarinet and brass students about the band workshop:
“My favourite part of the band workshop was making music with drumsticks, my body and our chairs. It was a great new experience and I liked going backstage in the performing arts theatre” – Tarrant
“I quite liked the stick and percussion class and it was good to learn some new songs on clarinet. It was also nice to see Butler College as we’ll be going there in a few years” – Samantha
“I liked how we played in an ensemble and sang songs while we were playing. I also liked how we met new students from other schools that learn our instruments.” - Manaia
“My favourite part was when we got to play instruments in a band. We sang ‘The Train’ and everyone had different parts as we played our percussion instruments. I’d love to go again!” – Hannah
“The band workshop was fun because we learnt lots of different songs like Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and played pieces that included body percussion.” – Shelby
“I thoroughly enjoyed the experience of my first ever band workshop that was held at Butler College. It was great to play with other students from other schools as well as our own, and all the different instruments. The teachers were awesome too.” - Cameron
A huge thank you to the IMSS teachers for organising such a successful event!
The guitar students also performed for the different year levels on the day too. Here they are seen performing for the Year Fives in the Undercover Area.

Thank you to Mr Hatch for organising the guitar performances. What a lucky treat for us all!
Well done to all the IMSS students for your huge commitment and enthusiasm to learn your instrument. Thank you.

Scitech
This term, a team from Scitech came out and presented a robotics coding club for a group of students ranging from Years 3 to 6. Students started with the basics of why robots are essential.
They then extended their knowledge through to coding/creating and programming robots to complete challenges.
Students were highly engaged during these sessions and the feedback from students, parents and teachers was fantastic.
We are hoping to carry this club on next year with more students.

What’s on in…….
3 Year Old Playgroup
This year the Butler 3 Year Old Playgroup children and parents have enjoyed meeting together every fortnight in PP5. We have had an exciting time of learning, social interaction, developing our fine and gross motor skills, story time, and music and movement! This term we had a visit from Stephanie from the Clarkson Library who gave each child a special library gift.
If you and your child are interested in joining the Playgroup in 2018 please visit the school office to register. Playgroup runs Wednesdays on the even weeks of term from 9.30am- 11.30am. Children who will be attending Kindy in 2019 are eligible to attend.
Mrs Johnston

PP5 Kindy
This term the Kindy children in PP5 have been exploring the theme of Minibeasts. We have observed the life cycle changes in our silk worms, hunted for snails and insects in our playground, and participated in some fine motor science activities about spiders. We are now eagerly waiting for our tadpoles to change into frogs and planning our Ugly Bug Ball to finish this theme.
Mrs Johnston

PP1 & PP3 Assembly
On Thursday 23rd November Pre-Primary classes 1 and 3 hosted the assembly. In Term 3 we learnt about the ocean and in our assembly we shared some facts that we knew about sea creatures. We sang two songs, Baby Shark and 3 Little Fishes. We dressed up in an ocean or beach theme, including our teachers! We all looked amazing and worked hard to learn our parts. Thank you to all of our parents and family members who came to watch and to Mrs Warburton for making the fish and shark costumes.

Pre-Primary
Outdoor Classroom Day
On Wednesday, 15th November PP1 and PP3 participated in an Outdoor Classroom Day. Some of the activities included block construction, mural painting, water play, weaving, dress ups, cooking wombat stew, listening to stories and loose parts play. The children had so much fun and it was wonderful to see how much they learned through play.
Thank you to Miss Dennis and Mrs Atchinson for organising the day, and to our amazing parent helpers for their enthusiasm.

Mrs De la Motte
Year 3
Throughout Term 4, the Year 3 classes have been learning about Civics and Citizenship during HASS lessons. As part of this, the students have learnt about rules, community involvement and how to be an active and valued community member. Mrs Ward (ECU Pre Service Teacher in D9), organised a fantastic incursion for the Year 3 students that promoted community involvement.
Five members from The Wanneroo/Joondalup State Emergency Service Unit visited our school for some interactive and informative activities. The students participated in an informative talk by a Unit Leader from the SES. He explained the various duties the members perform, how they practice rescue scenarios, learn about the equipment and how the teams are available 24/7 for emergencies when people need help. The students were able to view a variety of interesting, specialised equipment that they use for rescues and prevention of damage in storms as well as equipment for fixing damaged houses. The Year 3s learnt a lot about how the SES is run, the type of community involvement the members have and how the members of the SES help people in the community. The students were then able to look at the vehicles and equipment up close and ask questions about what they had learnt.
The students, teachers and parents all enjoyed the informative discussions, interactive displays and learnt so much about this awesome community group who are a valued part of our local community.

The Year 3 Teachers
Year 4 - Room 9
In Room 9, we created Shape Monsters as part of learning about the properties of 3D shapes. Watch out, these monsters are terrifying!

Mr Radford & Mrs Thompson
Year 4 – Room 10
The Year 4 students went on an excursion in September to the Shipwreck Museum in Fremantle. The excursion helped to support the History learning outcomes that we covered in class. Everyone had a fabulous time.

Mr Williams
Year 4 – Rooms 12 & 13
Throughout the year, the whole school has been involved in the Big Maths CLIC and Learn It Challenges as a way of improving core numeracy understanding. Rooms 12 and 13 have thoroughly enjoyed these weekly challenges and have been determined to improve their scores each week to move up a ‘CLIC’ or a ‘Learn It’ step. So many of the students have moved up multiple CLICs and Steps during the year and they have been very proud of their efforts. It has also been great to see how they have encouraged and supported one another to improve each week. Well done Room 12 and 13’s Maths Whizzes!

Parent Parking
To help ease congestion around the school during peak times we encourage families to walk their children to and from school wherever possible, especially in fine weather or park at the Community Centre car park and walk your children across the oval.
All Staff park at the front of the school. This will free up all bays in the public car park off Cambourne Way.
Families are reminded that parking is not permitted on grassed kerbside areas around the Pre-primary car park and along Tollesbury Avenue, as well as the bricked median strip in Cambourne Parkway or across any footpaths. Parking is also not permitted in bus bays. Please consider the safety of all other road users and pedestrians when parking and leaving schools grounds.
Please also give consideration and respect to owners of properties surrounding the school.
All usual road and parking rules apply around the school and parking fines are issued by rangers (who visit frequently) to those not adhering to the road rules. Please download the map below for parent parking information.

Absentee Messaging Service
Due to the ease of this service, the sending of a text message to Butler Primary School to notify us of your child/ren’s absence has been embraced by many families.
Please send absentee messages through to 0419 091 075 with all of the following details so we can correctly update student records:
- Full name of your child/children
- Reason for absence
- Date of absence
Absences can also be phoned through to the office on 9562 1804.
As per Department of Education policy, it is the parent’s responsibility to notify the school of the reason for your child’s absence/s within three days of the absence. Failure to do this will mean that the absence will be marked as “unacceptable reason” affecting your child’s education and attendance record.

Chaplain’s Corner
HI Everyone,

I hope you are well, and beginning to wind down for the end of the school year. We only have 2 weeks to go, and then a well-deserved break awaits us!
With Christmas moving quickly towards us, try and avoid some of the stress and keep it simple. The shops are filled with Christmas cheer, gifts and food and it can all be overwhelming at times. It helps to remind yourself of the true meaning of the season, and what it is all about for you….spending time with loved ones, reflecting on all we have to be thankful for, the spirit of giving, the birth of a saviour.
Enjoy these final 2 weeks of Term 4!
Kind regards,
Ms Hunter

This will go directly back to the school to purchase a much needed school banner for interschool events and faction flags for the school Athletics Carnival. It will also make a great start to our next project, which is to begin saving for more Jelly bean tables for upper years, which teachers and students alike are benefiting from in areas such as guided reading.
Special mention certainly needs to go to our amazing volunteers, without whom this event would not have happened!
Emma Hibbit, Jackie, Brian, Jake, Donika Wilkinson, Andrea Brennan, Elmarie Richardson, Tarryn Aldana, Claire Jarvis, Becci Young, Amy Crabtree, Robyn Defraine, Erin Lovell, Suzie Leggett, Kerry Joubert, Christina Munikah, Tarryn Imlach, Janet S, Sophie Taylor, Daria Keaton, Kristy Nugent, Lynne Reid, Charlote Walters, Dayna Harvey, Emily Batchelor and Lucy Malins
