A Note from the Principal
Welcome back to students, families, staff and friends of Butler Primary School for the final term of the year. I hope you had an opportunity during the holidays to rest and replenish energy for the remaining weeks of the 2017 school year.
I would like to extend a very warm welcome to Holly Lord, Catherine Cope, Jasmine Edwards, Carla Priddle, Heather Atchinson, Rebecca Carey, Shakira Dennis, Jamie-Lee Lydiate, Robert Pickering, Nichola Ward, Bianca Pyke, Chad Viney and Emily Morton to Butler Primary School. These Edith Cowan University pre-service students will be completing their practicums with us and on behalf of all the staff and students I hope their time with us is both productive and enjoyable.
During holiday times we all have the opportunity to develop an appreciation for an improved quality of sleep and as I reflected on this I realised that in such a busy world the importance of sleep can be overlooked for both children and adults.
Sleep quality and quantity is an important consideration for all our students. The amount of quality sleep influences a learner’s readiness and good humour to embrace all that the school day has to offer. It was interesting to read John Ross’s article Regular Hours Enhance Results (The Australian 01/07/17) confirming the contention that regular sleep hours enhance students’ health and well-being and academic results. Recent research from Harvard University suggests that regulated bedtimes and wake times equates with better achievement in comparison with students whose sleep patterns are irregular. Arianna Huffington (.How to succeed- Get more Sleep. Ted Talk) also advocates the importance of sleep and screen free time.
TIPS FOR IMPROVING CHILDREN’S SLEEP HABITS
- Restricting use of electronic devices in the hour before bed. The blue light emitted by some electronic devices stops the production of melatonin (the hormone associated with sleepiness). The stimulation of using electronic devices for games etc may also make it harder for children to ‘switch off’.
- Consistency in daily bedtime routines will help associate set behaviours with sleep.
- Consistency in times for going to bed and getting up – including on weekends as well as on week days – will help regulate body clocks.

Butler Primary Choir Girls

On Tuesday, 19th September 2017, the Butler Primary Girls’ Choir were treated to a visit by Paris from the Australian Girls’ Choir. This was a special assessment workshop.
Each student bravely stood up and sang Happy Birthday to Miss Jurgowiak (psst! It wasn’t my birthday) and perform some simple rhythm exercises.
All the girls sang beautifully and I’m proud of them singing on their own in front of each other. Following this, we then went outside to practise and perform a quick dance routine.
Well done to all of the girls and I’m glad you all had fun. The girls will receive a participation certificate, commenting on how wonderful they all are! For information on the Australian Girls’ Choir Open Day please ask for a flyer from the Music Teacher.

Year 6 Camp
The Year Six students had the incredible opportunity to spend three days and two nights at camp Ern Halliday between the 20th September and 22nd September. Their time at camp provided students the opportunity to participate in physical activities, which enhanced their interpersonal, leadership and decision making skills. Students engaged in activities such as archery, crate climbing, big swing, vertical ascent, bike pump track, team building and caving during their camp experience. Students conquered their fears of heights and persevered with challenging activities, which created new and wonderful memories. The camp was a huge success and students should be commended on their spectacular behaviour and effort.

Parent Parking
To help ease congestion around the school during peak times we encourage families to walk their children to and from school wherever possible, especially in fine weather or park at the Community Centre car park and walk your children across the oval.
All Staff park at the front of the school. This will free up all bays in the public car park off Cambourne Way.
Families are reminded that parking is not permitted on grassed kerbside areas around the Pre-primary car park and along Tollesbury Avenue, as well as the bricked median strip in Cambourne Parkway or across any footpaths. Parking is also not permitted in bus bays. Please consider the safety of all other road users and pedestrians when parking and leaving schools grounds.
Please also give consideration and respect to owners of properties surrounding the school.
All usual road and parking rules apply around the school and parking fines are issued by rangers (who visit frequently) to those not adhering to the road rules. Please download the map below for parent parking information.

Absentee Messaging Service
Due to the ease of this service, the sending of a text message to Butler Primary School to notify us of your child/ren’s absence has been embraced by many families.
Please send absentee messages through to 0419 091 075 with all of the following details so we can correctly update student records:
- Full name of your child/children
- Reason for absence
- Date of absence
Absences can also be phoned through to the office on 9562 1804.
As per Department of Education policy, it is the parent’s responsibility to notify the school of the reason for your child’s absence/s within three days of the absence. Failure to do this will mean that the absence will be marked as “unacceptable reason” affecting your child’s education and attendance record.
Students Arriving Late
Any student arriving late to school, after the siren sounds at 8.35am, will need to enter the school through the front office to collect a late note which is to be given to their class teacher.
Update Student Contact Information
If you have recently changed mobile numbers or moved address, it is important you update your contact information with the office. Please also advise if there is a change to any of your emergency contact information.
Siren Times
Please note the change in time for recess and lunch this year. The start and finish times for school remain the same.

Chaplain’s Corner
HELLO Everyone,
Welcome to Term 4!
I hope you had a restful and happy holiday and you’re feeling recharged for the new term.
The 5 Core Values of our school are: Integrity, Community, Respect, Responsibility and Aspire.
Let’s look at ‘Community’- a social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality and share government. Another description is – a unified body of individuals.
As a school, we are a community, working towards the same goal: Providing a happy and safe learning environment and treating one another as we would want to be treated. Let’s be looking out for one another and working together to keep our school community a happy and healthy one.

A few words to reflect on about happiness:
“Don’t aim at success – the more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it. For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued; it must ensue… as the unintended side-effect of one’s personal dedication to a cause greater than oneself.” – Viktor Frankl
Have a fantastic fortnight everyone!
Kind regards,
Ms Hunter
