A Note from the Principal
I read an article recently that referred to new research showing that 1200 children a month are involved in collisions or near misses within school parking areas or 500 metres of the school gates.
The article I read didn’t really shock me but it made me think that I am not prepared to wait until one of our students is seriously injured or even worse before I take some proactive action.
As you know, many of us have had on-going concerns with regards to traffic and parking issues.
There are three continuous problems we are facing on a daily basis:
- The first being the volume of traffic particularly at dropping off and picking up times.
- The second problem is the unsafe parking of a very small minority of our parents at dropping off and picking up time.
- The third issue is the congestion and in many cases unsafe situations created by the volume of cars entering the school car park.
In May last year I indicated that I was interested in working with interested parents to develop a strategy to address students’ safety during school drop off and pick up times. Unfortunately I didn’t receive one response to my request.
In progressing a systematic approach to this issue, I have instructed staff that they must park their vehicles in the school’s fenced cart park (Tollesbury Avenue). This will free up the public car park off Cambourne Way for parents. Parents also have access to street parking and the Community Centre car park.
During Term 3 I will trial restricting the use of the school’s car park to staff only. At the conclusion of the trial I will seek feedback from the school community to assess if this is a suitable long term solution.
I can’t believe we have reached the end of another term, in fact the end of Semester 1. This has been a busy term including our ANZAC Day Service, a trip to the theatre to see Matlida, school photos and much more.
Our School Board and P&C have continued to work hard to support and enhance our school programmes and resources in order to benefit the teaching and learning of all of our students.
Thank you to the many parents and caregivers who have also given their time to help out in their child’s class and around the school.
I would also like to thank all staff who have continued to work tirelessly over the term to ensure we have a safe and nurturing environment for our students where they are encouraged to be the best they can.
Have a safe and well deserved holiday and see you all next term.
Mrs Julie Woodhouse
Principal

D9 presented their assembly in Week 8. This term the students in D9 have been learning about Australia and Western Australia in our Geography and Literacy lessons. The students read out some of the facts they have been researching on some famous Australian landmarks, our states and territories and the capital cities. For WA Day, we learnt about the Great Southern region of Western Australia and the students of D9 enjoyed learning about the different regions of our beautiful state. The students did an awesome job of singing the song “Highway Number One” and added in some fun dance moves for their trip around Australia. Awesome work D9!

What’s on in………
PP3
We have had a very exciting Term 2 in PP3. The children have been learning all about Australia. Earlier in the term West Oz Wildlife came to visit us. They brought a koala, a dingo, a snake and a lizard. The children could touch these animals and they learned lots of interesting facts. They also found out what to do if they come across a snake in the wild.
This term was our Mother’s Day pamper party. Pre-Primary mums were treated to manicures, hair styles, massages, biscuit making and necklace threading. Our morning ended with the students singing a special song for their mums.
We have also been baking. The children cooked and decorated vanilla cupcakes. They were fabulous cooks. A big thank you to Tanya Cox and Tracey’s Delights for donating the fantastic cake decorating equipment.

PP 5 Kindy Circus Time
In week 6, the Kindy classes were entertained and educated in a variety of circus skills by Morgan (Scooby) of Ricochet Circus. Scooby’s show is not just about listening and watching, but also about having a go and learning to persist and encourage others. The children were able to practise the skill of juggling with scarves and spinning a plate. The children also illustrated and described their favourite part of the show.
In PP 5 we have enjoyed performing circus skills in our Kindy Circus tent. The children have explored mathematics and literacy concepts and practised fine motor and gross motor activities based on this theme.
In week 8 we were visited by “Buddy the Circus Dog” who showed us his tricks and emphasised the values that we are working on. He joined us in the classroom for the day! We have been busy in class making a clown costume which we will wear on Thursday for a “Circus Parade” to celebrate the end of Term.

D3 – Year 2

The students in D3 had an interesting time preparing for NAIDOC week. They explored a range of Dreamtime stories and created their own stories during Big Writing using a range of VCOP strategies. We are looking forward to continuing with our NAIDOC celebrations next week.

Parent Parking
To help ease congestion around the school during peak times we encourage families to walk their children to and from school wherever possible, especially in fine weather or park at the Community Centre car park and walk your children across the oval.
All Staff park at the front of the school. This will free up all bays in the public car park off Cambourne Way.
Families are reminded that parking is not permitted on grassed kerbside areas around the Pre-primary car park and along Tollesbury Avenue, as well as the bricked median strip in Cambourne Parkway or across any footpaths. Parking is also not permitted in bus bays. Please consider the safety of all other road users and pedestrians when parking and leaving schools grounds.
Please also give consideration and respect to owners of properties surrounding the school.
All usual road and parking rules apply around the school and parking fines are issued by rangers (who visit frequently) to those not adhering to the road rules. Please download the map below for parent parking information.
School Payment Options Available
Butler Primary School now has eftpos facilities available in the front office!

Absentee Messaging Service
Due to the ease of this service, the sending of a text message to Butler Primary School to notify us of your child/ren’s absence has been embraced by many families.
Please send absentee messages through to 0419 091 075 with all of the following details so we can correctly update student records:
- Full name of your child/children
- Reason for absence
- Date of absence
Absences can also be phoned through to the office on 9562 1804.
As per Department of Education policy, it is the parent’s responsibility to notify the school of the reason for your child’s absence/s within three days of the absence. Failure to do this will mean that the absence will be marked as “unacceptable reason” affecting your child’s education and attendance record.
Students Arriving Late
Any student arriving late to school, after the siren sounds at 8.35am, will need to enter the school through the front office to collect a late note which is to be given to their class teacher.
Update Student Contact Information
If you have recently changed mobile numbers or moved address, it is important you update your contact information with the office. Please also advise if there is a change to any of your emergency contact information.
Siren Times
Please note the change in time for recess and lunch this year. The start and finish times for school remain the same.

From the Library
We would like to thank the students who have returned their books to the library. This prompt return has enabled us to commence our stock take. For those students who haven’t returned their books, we will follow up with you next term by way of a letter and/or invoice being sent home.
Have a great break and enjoy your holidays. Stay safe and we look forward to seeing you all again next term.
Please remember, no library bag = no library book borrowing

Mrs Pengelly and Mrs Dowrick
Chaplain’s Corner

HELLO Everyone,
It’s Week 10! We have come to the end of another term and have the holidays to look forward to. I hope you are well and looking forward to having some time to slow down and have a break from your regular routines.
Taking time out –
The busyness of your life, means that it’s all the more important to give attention to something you probably rarely think about. All those gadgets demand your attention, your family demands your attention, your workmates and boss demand your attention and your dreams demand your attention. In the midst of all this there is someone who needs your attention the most. But this someone is the one who demands it the least. Sometimes that person does not even know they need that attention. That person is you.
Take time out by –

Simply relaxing and appreciating nature, feeling the sun on your face, noticing the trees the flowers. The fact that you are alive and well, the smell of a rainy day. It’s necessary to fully appreciate the things we often take for granted.
Another way to take time out is to simply be by yourself and think. Meditation or reflection. We sometimes need to shut out all the noise and distractions. Try to just be in the present moment and enjoy it for all that it is.
“Don’t underestimate the value of doing nothing, of just going along, listening to all the things you can’t hear, and not bothering.” – Advice from Pooh’s Little Instruction Book inspired by A.A.Milne.
Congratulations Staff, Students and Families on a successful term and all your hard work!!!
Have a safe and happy holiday and see you in Term 3.
Kind regards,
Ms Hunter

Canteen Corner
Online ordering is available for the Canteen via
http://www.canteen4schools.com.au/
We would like to remind everyone that cash lunch orders can still be made in person at the canteen if you can't use the online system. You need to deliver them to the canteen yourself and they have to be in before 9am (the earlier the better). Online ordering is preferred but exceptions can be made by speaking with Shelly in the canteen. After listening to feedback regarding our current online canteen provider, we are considering changing to a different one. More details to follow.
Recess and 2nd bell lunch treats and snacks are still available through the canteen hatch.
