A Note from the Principal
I read an article recently that referred to new research showing that 1200 children a month are involved in collisions or near misses within school parking areas or 500 metres of the school gates.
The article I read didn’t really shock me but it made me think that I am not prepared to wait until one of our students is seriously injured or even worse before I take some proactive action.
As you know, many of us have had on-going concerns with regards to traffic and parking issues.
There are three continuous problems we are facing on a daily basis:
- The first being the volume of traffic particularly at dropping off and picking up times.
- The second problem is the unsafe parking of a very small minority of our parents at dropping off and picking up time.
- The third issue is the congestion and in many cases unsafe situations created by the volume of cars entering the school car park.
In May last year I indicated that I was interested in working with interested parents to develop a strategy to address students’ safety during school drop off and pick up times. Unfortunately I didn’t receive one response to my request.
In progressing a systematic approach to this issue, I have instructed staff that they must park their vehicles in the school’s fenced car park (Tollesbury Avenue). This will free up the public car park off Cambourne Way for parents. Parents also have access to street parking and the Community Centre car park.
During Term 3 I will trial restricting the use of the school’s car park to staff only. At the conclusion of the trial I will seek feedback from the school community to assess if this is a suitable long term solution.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability
Butler Primary School is required to collect data about students with a disability and / or learning difficulties. We have been asked to provide data about the health and learning needs of children at Butler Primary School. The name of the school and the name of the students will not be reported. Information about the type of needs, programs and resources the school uses to overcome barriers and support children with special educational needs will be collected.
This data will help governments and the department develop better policies that acknowledge the level of funding and resources needed in schools to meet the needs of all students in Western Australia.

Assembly Item – D4 Year 2
D4 presented their assembly in Week 6. To celebrate International Children’s Day, the students sung a song called ‘Heal the World’. They discussed some simple ways that they can contribute to help make the world a better place; by being kind, looking after the environment, helping others, volunteering and donating. They have since worked very hard to implement some of these and become more aware of the importance of the world around us. Great work D4!

What’s on in………
Sport
What a busy start to the year it has been for the Butler sports programme.
The years sporting calendar kicked off with the continuation of the Sporting Schools Programme for the year 5 and 6 students. During Term 1 students from year 6 were offered the opportunity to participate in a basketball clinic run by the Joondalup Wolves. The clinic was a great success with all students enjoying the basketball activities run by Luke and Richard, two very talented Joondalup Wolves players.
This term 20 year 5 students have been invited to participate in an athletics programme developed by Athletics Australia. Students have had the opportunity to practice and develop their athletics skills over a number of weeks focusing on correct skills and participation in sprints, throws and triple jump. So far the students have shown great enthusiasm and enjoyment for all the activities practiced so far.
On the 27th of April the students from year 4–6 participate in the Butler Primary School Cross Country Carnival. It was great to see all students finish the course, earning a point for their faction. The top 5 boys and girls were invited to join Butler Primary School Cross Country Team. This team has been training Tuesday mornings and Thursday Afternoons with Mr Piperis and Ms Banfield. The 9th of June will be our first completion, where these talented runners will compete at Quinns Invitational Cross Country Carnival. The state cross Country Carnival will be held early in Term 3 at the UWA’s sports Park in Nedlands, where we hope to take out first place against schools from around WA. Go Butler!
Term 3 also sees the Butler Primary School Athletics Carnival. On the 1st of September the school oval will be inundated with all Butler Primary School students competing in a variety of athletics based activities, to see which faction will take out this year’s championship trophy. All family members are welcome to come along on the day to cheer their children on.
Later this term students from year 6 will be taking part in the winter Lightning Carnival at Quinns Beach Primary School where they will compete against other students from Quinns Beach PS, Alkimos PS and East Butler PS in AFL, Netball and Soccer. During Term 4 the year 5 students will have the opportunity to compete against the same schools playing Basketball, T-Ball and Cricket during the summer carnival. Good luck, Butler!
Mr Piperis
NAIDOC WEEK
What is NAIDOC week?
NAIDOC week is an opportunity to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, talent and resilience.
It is celebrated annually in the first full week of July, it stands for 'National Aboriginal and Islanders Day Observance Committee'. Its origins can be traced back to the emergence of Aboriginal groups in the 1920's which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians.
It's a week when Australia celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures and communities and recognises the valuable contributions that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people make to our country.
In 2017 the theme is "Our Languages Matter" - this aims to emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in cultural identity, linking people to their land and water and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spiritually and rites, through story and song.
There are many NAIDOC week community events throughout the City of Wanneroo and our school is celebrating NAIDOC in Week 10 commencing Monday June 26th.

Parent Parking
To help ease congestion around the school during peak times we encourage families to walk their children to and from school wherever possible, especially in fine weather or park at the Community Centre car park and walk your children across the oval.
All Staff park at the front of the school. This will free up all bays in the public car park off Cambourne Way.
Families are reminded that parking is not permitted on grassed kerbside areas around the Pre-primary car park and along Tollesbury Avenue, as well as the bricked median strip in Cambourne Parkway or across any footpaths. Parking is also not permitted in bus bays. Please consider the safety of all other road users and pedestrians when parking and leaving schools grounds.
Please also give consideration and respect to owners of properties surrounding the school.
All usual road and parking rules apply around the school and parking fines are issued by rangers (who visit frequently) to those not adhering to the road rules. Please download the map below for parent parking information.

Absentee Messaging Service
Due to the ease of this service, the sending of a text message to Butler Primary School to notify us of your child/ren’s absence has been embraced by many families.
Please send absentee messages through to 0419 091 075 with all of the following details so we can correctly update student records:
- Full name of your child/children
- Reason for absence
- Date of absence
Absences can also be phoned through to the office on 9562 1804.
As per Department of Education policy, it is the parent’s responsibility to notify the school of the reason for your child’s absence/s within three days of the absence. Failure to do this will mean that the absence will be marked as “unacceptable reason” affecting your child’s education and attendance record.
Students Arriving Late
Any student arriving late to school, after the siren sounds at 8.35am, will need to enter the school through the front office to collect a late note which is to be given to their class teacher.
Update Student Contact Information
If you have recently changed mobile numbers or moved address, it is important you update your contact information with the office. Please also advise if there is a change to any of your emergency contact information.
