A Note from the Principal
Butler Primary School has identified five core values that define us as a positive school community. Respect, Responsibility, Community, Integrity and Aspire are embedded into our teaching and learning programs and influence our actions and behaviours every day.
Our school promotes a number of anti-bullying programs and will not tolerate any form of bullying.
So what is bullying?
Bullying is when people repeatedly and intentionally use words or actions against someone or a group of people to cause distress and risk to their wellbeing. People who do it usually have more influence or power over someone else, or want to make someone else feel less powerful or helpless.
Bullying is not the same as conflict between people (like having a fight) or disliking someone, even though people might bully each other because of conflict or dislike.
The sort of repeated behaviour that can be considered bullying include:
- Keeping someone out of a group (online or offline)
- Giving nasty looks, making rude gestures, calling names, being rude and impolite, and constant negative teasing.
- Spreading rumours or lies, or misrepresenting someone (i.e. using their Facebook account to post messages as if it were them)
- Messing around that goes too far
- Harassing someone based on their race, sex, religion, gender or a disability
- Intentionally and repeatedly hurting someone
- Intentionally stalking someone
- Taking advantage of any power over someone else
Bullying can happen anywhere and at Butler Primary School we believe that approaches which focus on building and restoring relationships provide the safest and supportive environment for all children.

IMPORTANT DATES FOR WEEKS 5 & 6 - TERM 2, 2017 Week 4 – Friday, 19th May – Walk Safely to
School Day PROFESSIONAL SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT DAYS 2017 (PUPIL FREE): Monday, 21 August |
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO PARENTS
Fidget Spinners
Of late we have noticed a lot of students bringing their own fidget spinner toys to school.
Our school’s position is that we do not allow the use of private fidget spinner toys or any other toys at Butler Primary School.
If children bring them to school they will be confiscated and returned at the end of the school day.
Students who require a device for sensory needs will be provided with one from the school after consultation with stakeholders (parent, teacher, SAER and Deputy Principal).
We thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Go Blue for Autism
As we have done in previous years on the last day of Term 1, Friday 7th April, we participated in an Autism Awareness Day. Our students dressed in blue as this is the internationally recognised colour to signify ASD (autism spectrum disorder). Students gave a gold coin donation to take part, and we raised a fantastic $620! This year we donated the money to Autism Service Dogs which are trained by Assistance Dogs Australia. These dogs provide many benefits to individuals and families including helping with communication skills, social relationships, providing routine and stability, reducing anxiety and many more.
Thank you for your support.

WHAT’S ON IN…………
Year 4
As part of the Year 4 Mathematics for this term, students are learning about length, area, capacity and temperature.
These students from Room 9 (see below) are using trundle wheels to calculate large distances outside the classroom. We measured length and width and were then able to calculate the perimeter! Do you know how to do that?

.jpg?ts=1495083625)
For Geography this term, the Year 4 students are learning about the continents of Africa and South America.
These students from Room 10 (see below) are researching locations and land features of Africa and South America.

In English this term, Year 4 students are learning how to write Informational Texts. We have been focusing primarily on tigers, learning all about their physical characteristics, their lifestyle and the different subspecies. We have then used our new knowledge to create our own information texts.

Parent Parking
To help ease congestion around the school during peak times we encourage families to walk their children to and from school wherever possible, especially in fine weather or park at the Community Centre car park and walk your children across the oval.
All Staff park at the front of the school. This will free up all bays in the public car park off Cambourne Way.
Families are reminded that parking is not permitted on grassed kerbside areas around the Pre-primary car park and along Tollesbury Avenue, as well as the bricked median strip in Cambourne Parkway or across any footpaths. Parking is also not permitted in bus bays. Please consider the safety of all other road users and pedestrians when parking and leaving schools grounds.
Please also give consideration and respect to owners of properties surrounding the school.
All usual road and parking rules apply around the school and parking fines are issued by rangers (who visit frequently) to those not adhering to the road rules. Please download the map below for parent parking information.
School Payment Options Available
Butler Primary School now has eftpos facilities available in the front office!

Absentee Messaging Service
Due to the ease of this service, the sending of a text message to Butler Primary School to notify us of your child/ren’s absence has been embraced by many families.
Please send absentee messages through to 0419 091 075 with all of the following details so we can correctly update student records:
- Full name of your child/children
- Reason for absence
- Date of absence
Absences can also be phoned through to the office on 9562 1804.
As per Department of Education policy, it is the parent’s responsibility to notify the school of the reason for your child’s absence/s within three days of the absence. Failure to do this will mean that the absence will be marked as “unacceptable reason” affecting your child’s education and attendance record.
Students Arriving Late
Any student arriving late to school, after the siren sounds at 8.35am, will need to enter the school through the front office to collect a late note which is to be given to their class teacher.
Update Student Contact Information
If you have recently changed mobile numbers or moved address, it is important you update your contact information with the office. Please also advise if there is a change to any of your emergency contact information.
Siren Times
Please note the change in time for recess and lunch this year. The start and finish times for school remain the same.

Book Club
The catalogue for Book Club Issue 3/2017 was circulated last week and orders close tomorrow, Friday 19th May. The easiest way to order is online via Scholastic Book Club LOOP site and follow the prompts: Orders will be delivered to your child as soon as they arrive at school.
https://mybookclubs.scholastic.com.au/
Dates to Remember
Please be aware that the library will be closed for the following weeks this term:
Week 5 – 22 to 26 May
School photos
Lexile students will still be able to borrow Lexile only books in Week 5, before and after school Monday to Thursday and before school on Friday morning.
Week 9 & 10 – 19 to 30
June Stocktake non-fiction, senior fiction, picture books and Lexile books
All student library books must be returned to the Library by the end of Week 8, in preparation for stocktake.
Overdue Books
Unfortunately, many students are disappointed each week as they are unable to borrow library books. Parents, if your child’s library book is overdue by more than 2 weeks, you will be invoiced for the book’s replacement cost and your child will be unable to borrow until the book is either returned or the replacement cost paid.
Let your child choose his or her own library book:
A recent study has shown that when you let your child chose their own library book, they:
- will take risks in the genres they chose to read
- will read more
- become better writers
- enjoy reading; it’s not a chore
- become empowered

Please remember, no library bag = no library book borrowing

To all the Mums in our school community, I hope you enjoyed your Mother’s Day and were showered with love and appreciation, (as you should be every day). You no doubt loved all the precious gifts your children created at school.
Mother's Day
Mother's Day is a celebration honouring the mother of the family, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society. It is celebrated on various days in many parts of the world, most commonly in the months of March or May.
