A Note from the Principal
As I reflect on our first term of the 2017 school year I can’t help but be impressed with the collaboration and cooperation that happens across our school.
The atmosphere of explicit teaching and vibrant learning has become widespread and contagious. I see it in our Kindergarten students who have started this term in awe of their beautiful environment where the possibilities to learn seem endless. Their contentment is also expressed with the warm greetings I receive from those students every time I visit the classrooms.
A love of learning is evident throughout the school and at the end of the week I will be privileged to have lunch with six outstanding students who display respect, responsibility, integrity, community and aspiration every day.
I wish everybody a safe, restful and happy vacation break.

Principal

ANZAC SERVICE
Butler Primary School’s ANZAC Service will take place on Monday the 24th of April. This will be the first day of Term 2.
This year we will be focussing on ‘Animals in War’ and honour the contribution of all animals that have served in wars and conflicts. The children will be making red and purple poppies which will be placed in the ground around the flag pole. This will serve as a memorial for the service men, women and animals that lost their lives in war and conflicts. After our ANZAC Service the purple poppies will be sent to the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation to be taken to Pozieres in France to be displayed at the unveiling of Australia’s first official war animal memorial on the 27th July this year.
The children will also participate in a free incursion about the role of horses in war. The display includes life-size models of a Light Horse soldier and Light Horse, both in WWI attire. It also has WW1 memorabilia and photos.
An ANZAC Memories form has been sent to all families so that you can honour family members or friends who have served in war and conflicts. These need to be returned by Friday 7th April to be included in our display.
Parents and members of the Butler Primary School community are most welcome to attend our service which will commence at 9.30 am in the undercover area.

HARMONY DAY
This year Harmony Day was held on the 21st of March. All the students wore orange in support of this special day.
Each year group participated in different activities. Miss Tighe’s class even made a video and their parents were invited to watch.

We had a photographic competition as well. Individual students got the opportunity to take photos that represented the theme ‘Everyone Belongs’. Some year groups decided to work together to create a class photo. What an exciting day!

FREE COFFEE FRIDAY
A visit from 98.5 Sonshine FM radio with hosts Kirste and Morro, was organised by the school chaplain, Mrs Vangi Hunter, to visit Butler on the morning of Friday 17th March. The school had the wonderful opportunity to promote the school community for an hour on air. Mrs Ros Gaston promoted the Zones of Regulation program that is run as a whole school program. Mrs Liz Marsh promoted the Values program that is also run at whole school level. She also mentioned the pencils that promote our five values of community, respect, aspire, responsibility and integrity at the front of the administration block. The free coffee and donuts proved very popular with our parents and staff.

WHAT’S ON IN…………
3 Year Old Playgroup
Three Year old Playgroup children and caregivers have been meeting fortnightly this term in PP5. The children have been enjoying outside activities that encourage social interaction and gross motor skills. They have also been learning to sit and focus at story time and have participated in fine motor activities that encourage the learning of shapes, colours, counting, and identifying similarities and differences. During one of the sessions the children were visited by two little kid goats who joined in the fun and games! Each session concludes with a music and movement activity. There are still places available for Term 2. Please register your interest at the school office.

Bear adventures:
This term the children in PP5 have been exploring Mathematics and English concepts through the theme of Teddy Bears. In Week 7 we studied the story, “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt”. We enjoyed watching the author, Michael Rosen, tell the story on the smartboard then we went on our own hunt for a Polar Bear. We experienced the feeling of large blocks of ice and slippery shaving cream snow. We rolled along a soft snowing hill, and finally crept into an icy cave. Each child built a warm house for the teddy bear they had made at kindy on the sewing machine. We will finish this theme in Week 10 by taking our teddies on a teddy bears’ picnic.

Kindy – PP6
To celebrate Harmony Day, the children in PP6 worked together on an exciting art project.
Over a number of days, they decorated with paints, ribbons and glitter to produce lots of very special balloons.
The children then placed a small photograph of themselves onto the balloons.
As the children participated in this meaningful, fun experience, they shared a sense of achievement and belonging.

Year 6
On Thursday the 30th of March, Butler Primary School students participated in the annual Super 8’s Cricket Competition at Butler College. Year 6 represented the school across two teams in an expansive competition featuring East Butler, Quinns Beach, Merriwa, Clarkson, and Somerly. Coached by Mr Milner, Butler dominated Pool A to finish first and second and make the finals. Captained by Shub Singh, Butler 2 battled hard in a close semi final loss against Clarkson to finish a dignified 6th. Undefeated, Butler 1 entered the grand final against Quinns Beach in great form with precision batting and bowling. Led by Ben Parnell and Isaac Price, wickets tumbled with ball in hand, and runs were flowing with countless 4s and 6s with the bat. Excitement and suspense was building culminating in the announcement and presentation of the trophy to Butler Primary for a famous victory! A big thankyou to Luke Edwards from Butler College for organising a thoroughly enjoyable competition where great sportsmanship was encouraged and displayed by all schools who participated. Luke will be presenting the engraved 2017 Champions Trophy to Butler Primary in Week 10 Thursday senior assembly.

NAPLAN 2017 Information to Parents
The National Assessment Program- Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment of all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. All students are expected to participate in the testing. They will be assessed in language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation), writing, reading and numeracy.
The test results provide a snapshot of a student’s achievement in comparison to all students of the same year level across the country. The results assist teachers to better identify students who require additional support or enrichment. The tests allow the progress of each student to be monitored over time.
The results support schools to identify strengths and weaknesses in teaching programs. State and territory departments of education gain valuable information to help them evaluate programs and allocate resources.
Although some schools will be participating in online NAPLAN tests in 2017, Butler PS will be using pencil and paper as in previous years. Butler PS will move to online testing in the future. Below is a table of dates for the NAPLAN tests.

Parent Parking
To help ease congestion around the school during peak times we encourage families to walk their children to and from school wherever possible, especially in fine weather or park at the community centre car park and walk your children across the oval.
Families are reminded that parking is not permitted on grassed kerbside areas around the Pre-primary car park and along Tollesbury Avenue, as well as the bricked median strip in Cambourne Parkway or across any footpaths. Parking is also not permitted in bus bays. Please consider the safety of all other road users and pedestrians when parking and leaving schools grounds.
Please also give consideration and respect to owners of properties surrounding the school.
All usual road and parking rules apply around the school and parking fines are issued by rangers (who visit frequently) to those not adhering to the road rules. Please download the map below for parent parking information.

Absentee Messaging Service
Due to the ease of this service, the sending of a text message to Butler Primary School to notify us of your child/ren’s absence has been embraced by many families.
A reminder to families to please send absentee messages through to 0419 091 075 with all of the following details so that we can correctly update student records:
- Full name of your child/children
- Reason for absence
- Date of absence
Absences can also be phoned through to 9562 1804.
As per Department of Education policy, it is the parent’s responsibility to notify the school of the reason for your child’s absence/s within three days of the absence. Failure to do this will mean that the absence will be marked as “unacceptable reason” affecting your child’s education and attendance record.
Students Arriving Late
Any student arriving late to school, after the siren sounds at 8.35am, will need to enter the school through the front office to collect a late note which is to be given to their class Teacher.
Update Student Contact Information
If you have recently changed mobile numbers or moved address, it is important you update your contact information with the office. Please also advise if there is a change to any of your emergency contact information.

From the Library

We cannot believe that we are at the end of Term 1! If your child has a library book at home, please have them return it to the Library by tomorrow. Senior students may keep their Lexile book over the break, but please do not take it with you if you are going away.
Orders for book club Issue 2 will not be delivered to school until next term. We processed all orders before the final Scholastic due date and when chasing the order delivery on Tuesday, Scholastic Book Club (ph: 1800 021 233) apologised and advised that due to their computer glitch, orders cannot be delivered before the end of this term. As soon as these orders arrive, we will deliver them to classes.
Thank you to all the children who have consistently returned or renewed their library books on time this term and who use their library bags.
Please help your child remember his or her library book and bag.

Chaplain’s Corner

HI Everyone,
This brings us to our last week of the term! Has this flown by as quickly for you as it has for me? I hope Term 1 has been a great one for you, and that you are looking forward to the Easter holidays.
Christians in Australia celebrate Easter Sunday as the day Jesus rose from the dead after he was crucified. Christians believe that Jesus was crucified on the Friday and laid in a tomb. Jesus rose on the third day, Easter Sunday. Easter Sunday is a very important day for Christians as the resurrection of Christ reflects a central idea in Christianity. For non-religious people and followers of other faiths, the four-day Easter weekend is a chance to enjoy various sporting and cultural events. On Easter Sunday many of us exchange Easter eggs. In different cultures around the world the egg is a symbol of new life, fertility and rebirth.
Have a blessed Easter everyone, and enjoy the traditions and celebrations which are part of your own belief system.
CONGRATULATIONS on a fantastic term Staff, Students & Families!!!
Have a restful break and keep safe!

Kind regards,
Ms Hunter
School Chaplain
