A Note from the Principal

Matilda Day proved to be a fantastic celebration of team effort at Butler Primary School. Money raised from the gold coin donation, raffle, sausage sizzle, ice-creams, and Matilda movie afternoon will enable our Year 5 and Year 6 students to attend Matilda the Musical at highly reduced prices.

Students enjoyed dressing up as a character from Matilda. As I greeted the students at the start of the day, I was delighted to see Miss Honey, Bruce Bogtrotter, Mr and Mrs Wormwood and Matilda in many shapes and sizes. I was quite astounded to see some very intimidating Miss Trunchbulls and felt secretly relieved that we don’t normally have her visit the school! Thank you to our teachers who made the day rich in literacy and to our students who made Matilda Day a big success!

The Election Day sausage sizzle was a wonderful success with eager electors succumbing to the aromas of sausages sizzling and onions cooking. Thank you to our parent community and staff volunteers who made the event so successful.

Money raised from both events was approximately $6000!

NAPLAN 2017 Information to Parents

The National Assessment Program- Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment of all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. All students are expected to participate in the testing. They will be assessed in language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation), writing, reading and numeracy.

The test results provide a snapshot of a student’s achievement in comparison to all students of the same year level across the country. The results assist teachers to better identify students who require additional support or enrichment. The tests allow the progress of each student to be monitored over time.

The results support schools to identify strengths and weaknesses in teaching programs. State and territory departments of education gain valuable information to help them evaluate programs and allocate resources.

Although some schools will be participating in online NAPLAN tests in 2017, Butler PS will be using pencil and paper as in previous years. Butler PS will move to online testing in the future. Below is a table of dates for the NAPLAN tests.

D2 Assembly – Week 6

The D2 Assembly was held on Thursday 9 March. The Year 2 students have been studying Fairy Tales this term. We have also been learning about Values, as written on the big pencils at the front of the school. These Values are Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Aspire and Community.

Our item was in two parts. The children read about the Values from their own writing, which was condensed due to time restraints. The main part of our item was presenting “The Little Red Hen” as a play. In the play Duck, Pig and Dog are not very helpful to Little Red Hen. With a bit of poetic licence in the second part of the play, Little Red Hen takes the other characters to Butler PS to learn some Values. The characters become kind and helpful. They assist Little Red Hen with all the tasks and enjoy the bread together at the end of the play.

The D2 parents, grandparents and friends came back to the classroom for morning tea. This completed a very enjoyable morning for our class.

3 Year Old Kindy Program 2017

Three Year old Playgroup children and caregivers have been meeting fortnightly this term in PP 5. The children have been enjoying outside activities that encourage social interaction and gross motor skills. They have also been learning to sit and focus at story time and have participated in fine motor activities that encourage the learning of shapes, colours, counting, and identifying similarities and differences. During one of the sessions the children were visited by two little kid goats who joined in the fun and games! Each session concludes with a music and movement activity. There are still places available for Term 2. Please register your interest at the school office.

What’s on in Year 1

Room 1

This Term the Year One students have been learning about the school values of Butler Primary School. Respect, Aspire, Community, Integrity and Responsibility. Each Year One class have their own ‘Warm Fuzzy Jar’. This jar supports the teaching and learning of the school values. When the values are being displayed within the classroom, a ’Warm Fuzzy’ is placed into the jar. When the jar is full, the students receive a class reward. Below are photos of Room 1 enjoying their reward which was a teddy bear picnic. The students had a wonderful afternoon and can’t wait to fill the jar again!

Miss Connor

Room 2

In Room 2 we have been completing activities about The Zones of Regulation. We have identified which of our emotions fit within the four zones. The class drew pictures of themselves in the four zones to help us identify these emotions in others. We have completed our toolboxes to use as a quick reference to help us choose tools to get back in the green zone. We also completed posters that show activities that we complete within our class that put us in the green zone.

Mrs Gaston

Room 3

This term the students of Room 3 have been using OSMO Words to engage in spelling. OSMO Words is an application on the iPad which is used with a stand and letter blocks. An image is displayed on the iPad and students complete with a partner to see who will guess and spell the word first. The application consists of many different ability levels and allows players to focus on specific spelling rules or vocabulary words.

Miss Botma

Room 4

This Term the Year One students have been learning about place value in Mathematics. Room 4 have been participating in hands-on activities to build an understanding of place value. They have been using the uni-fix cubes, counters and bead strings to partition numbers. They have broken apart, rearranged and re-formed numbers to help with their understanding. Room 4 are now confident mathematicians and are able to read, write and understand two-digit numbers. Fantastic job, Room 4!

Parent Parking

To help ease congestion around the school during peak times we encourage families to walk their children to and from school wherever possible, especially in fine weather or park at the community centre car park and walk your children across the oval.

Families are reminded that parking is not permitted on grassed kerbside areas around the Pre-primary car park and along Tollesbury Avenue, as well as the bricked median strip in Cambourne Parkway or across any footpaths. Parking is also not permitted in bus bays. Please consider the safety of all other road users and pedestrians when parking and leaving schools grounds.

Please also give consideration and respect to owners of properties surrounding the school.

All usual road and parking rules apply around the school and parking fines are issued by rangers (who visit frequently) to those not adhering to the road rules. Please download the map below for parent parking information.

Chaplain’s Corner

Hello Everyone,

I hope this finds you well, and that you are having a great 2nd half of the term.

It has been an exciting and an eventful term!

Last Friday we had Kirste and Morro from Sonshine FM (98five), come and broadcast their breakfast show from Butler PS. This was part of their “Free Coffee Friday” where they visit different schools and talk about the great things which are happening.

We had our fabulous Mrs Gaston and Mrs Marsh talk On Air about our ‘Zones of Regulation’ and our ‘Values’. I spoke about my role as Chaplain and our beautiful school Butler PS.

Staff, parents and students gathered around the 98five van and enjoyed listening to our school being broadcasted on the radio! Free coffees and delicious jam donuts were enjoyed by many!

THANK YOU Sonshine FM for coming to our school. We loved having you here

Have a fantastic fortnight everyone.

Kind regards,
Ms Hunter

Fundraising Committee Wanted

If you or a bunch of friends have some ideas for fundraising for the P&C this year we are looking for anyone keen to form a Fundraising Committee. Currently the P&C has no plans to fundraise this year due to too few members which means the school won’t be able to purchase extras that the P&C usually pay for. You don’t have to commit to continual volunteering, all we ask is that people come to help out once. Many hands make light work.

For further information contact the P&C via email at butlerps.pandc@gmail.com or through the P&C Facebook page “Butler Primary P&C Association” – please see details above.

Canteen Helpers

If you or anyone you know would like to volunteer to help in the canteen for an hour or so please see Shelly in the canteen, email her at butlerpscanteen@gmail.com, call the school or send us a message on the P&C Facebook page.

Many thanks from your P&C Committee:
