A Note from the Principal
As Term 3 draws to a close I am privileged to continue to see fantastic developments happening in our classrooms and this is due to the hard work of our teachers. Staff are always looking at ways to improve what they do. They are continually talking to their colleagues about 21st century teaching and learning, seeking feedback from others and talking to their students about what interests them. Teaching is a challenging profession that involves building and making relationships with their students and managing the relationships that they have between each other. It is the profession that creates all other professions, and our teachers are doing it really well.
Have a safe and happy holiday and enjoy spending time with your family and loved ones.

Room 17 Assembly, Week 8
Room 17 flexed their amazing acting muscles and precise poetry knowledge at the Senior Assembly on Thursday, 8 September. To showcase what the Year 5 students were learning about poetry and poetic devices, Room 17 decided to perform a play. Our two main characters, Ben and Lexie, had no idea what poetry devices were, but had to include them in their next Big Writing. With all hope lost, the mysterious Professor Poetry appears, seemingly out of nowhere, to assist our confused characters. Professor Poetry brings his poetry pack of Roger Rhyme, Ally Alliteration, Rosie Repetition, Sarah Simile, Matt Metaphor, Pete Personification and Oliver Onomatopoeia to teach Lexie and Ben all about poetic devices. Thanks to Professor Poetry and the poetry pack, Ben and Lexie were able to write amazing poems during their Big Writing. To end their fantastic acting performance, Room 17 delighted the crowd with a musical rendition of “Similes and Metaphors” by the Bazillions. Room 17 displayed their excellent understanding of poetry and have continued to demonstrate their learning in class. The students of Room 17 were as brave as lions getting up on stage and performing to the crowd so amazingly. They should be extremely proud of their efforts. Thank you to Mrs Condo for helping with the display boards and backdrop. Five stars for Room 17 and their poetically, perfect play.

D3 Assembly, Week 9
At the Junior Assembly on Thursday, 15 September, we were all WOWed by the wonderful performance of the Year 2 students from D3! The Super Heroes of D3 used very clever rhyme, music and actions to show to us how to improve our everyday writing by using some fantastically awesome ‘VCOP’ techniques. Violet Vocabulary demonstrated the importance of using interesting and descriptive words in sentences to make them more exciting and to make the reader go WOW! Captain Connective then zoomed by to show us how using connective words can connect simple sentences, so they are not so boring. The Incredible Opener flew in to talk to us about using interesting openers at the beginning of our writing that will draw the reader in. Finally, the highlight of the show was when the Kung Fu Panda experts put on a master display of punctuation actions, as sentences were thrown at them! Thank you Miss Botma, Mrs Ferguson and all of the students in D3 for your colourful, creative and educational show! You have shown us all how Big Writing and the daily literacy warm ups are having a fun, beneficial and positive influence on the students’ learning.
Miss J Brown D5, reporting for D3.
One Big Voice

2016 PERTH ARENA CONCERT
On Friday, 12 August the Butler Primary School Choir attended the One Big Voice singing festival. It was an amazing day from start to finish!
It started by the choir catching the train from the Butler station into the city. For some students, it was their first trip on a train. We walked down to the Perth Arena where we rehearsed our 10 songs for the upcoming evening concert. The harmonies were sounding amazing and we couldn’t wait to showcase it to all the parents.
We were lucky enough to all be treated to some Young Talent prior to the show starting. There was Robbie from the Voice, The Kids and the Subih Brothers from Australia’s Got Talent. Wow!
Then the big moment arrived! Parents, teachers, family members and even Mrs Woodhouse came to see our extraordinary concert. Butler Primary was going to sing with more than 70 other school choirs. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house as the One Big Voice choir sang. Just some of the songs heard were “I’ll Be There”, “When the Lights All Shine”, “On Top of the World” and “Fight Song”.
Not only did the Butler Primary Choir sing beautifully at the One Big Voice concert, but they showed an excellent display of behaviour. I would like to say a huge thank you to the students and their parents for their support in getting the Choirettes to rehearsals each week.
I can’t wait for next year’s One Big Voice!

Book Week News
This term we enjoyed another fantastic Book Week.
The students took part in competitions, book activities, incursions and fun, school community events such as the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party and the Book Character Dress-up Day.
It was wonderful to see so many families at the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, supporting their children’s education and encouraging a love of literacy.
As always, the costumes worn by students for our Book Character Dress-up day were outstanding and creative. The school was filled with all of our favourite characters from fairy tale princesses to action heroes and evil villains. The Book Week play was also a great success and thoroughly enjoyed by everyone who attended.
Congratulations to all of the Book Cover competition winners (see winners below), Guess the Book winners and Readathon winners.
Thank you again for supporting Book Week. We are already looking forward to Book Week 2017!

ICT Across Butler Primary School
As you may be aware, we have had a computer and network upgrade at Butler Primary School. We are moving towards a wireless platform and have recently purchased 60 laptops and an iPad per class. The students and teachers are having a great time learning how to use the new resources and apps.
Students from Room 13 enjoyed showing their Year 1 buddies from Room 3 how to use ‘Book Creator’ on the iPads.

Year 3 students had a great time learning how to log onto the laptops with their unique usernames and passwords. Once logged on, they practised and developed important word processing and computer skills on Microsoft Word.

Room 1 loved logging onto the laptops to develop key computer skills, such as touch typing, navigation and online safety skills. They did such a good job at logging onto their unique accounts and remembering to keep their log-in details safe.

The Year 5 students are becoming coding experts as they develop their digital technology skills on ‘Scratch’.

It’s not just the children brushing up on their coding skills. The teachers are learning how to code too.

Social Media
As our children grow up in a digital world, it is important that we work together to keep them safe online. While the Internet can have tremendous benefits and children should be exposed to it, it is important that we know some of the potential risks and how to combat these.
A particularly important issue to address is the use of social media. Whilst many students use social media to communicate with their friends and family, it can be potentially harmful. As parents, you can help monitor and control what social media and devices your child accesses to help keep them safe online. To support you with this, we will be holding two parent presentation workshops next term to provide information and advice in keeping your children safe online. More information will follow.
In the meantime, you can find some useful information from the Office of Children’s eSafety Commissioner on the following link:
https://esafety.gov.au/
Below is also a list of age restrictions on some social media sites that are popular with children taken from:
https://esafety.gov.au/education-resources/iparent/staying-safe/social-networking/is-there-an-age-limit-for-kids-on-social-media
Most social media services and apps require users to be 13 years old to join.
Why 13? This is usually to comply with the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998 (COPPA)—a US law preventing the collection and storage of personal information from a child under 13.
What about APPS? App stores set their own age ratings based on the app’s content.

BUTLER OUT OF HOURS SCHOOL CARE
Butler’s YMCA provides affordable care before and after school, every Monday to Friday.
Please also find below the itinerary for the exciting, fun filled Spring Holiday Vacation Care Program taking place at YMCA these school holidays.

Parent Parking
Parents are reminded that parking is not permitted on grassed kerbside areas around the Pre-primary car park and along Tollesbury Avenue, as well as the bricked median strip in Cambourne Parkway or across any footpaths. Please consider the safety of all other road users and pedestrians when parking and leaving schools grounds.
All usual road and parking rules apply around the school and parking fines are issued by rangers (who visit frequently) to those not adhering to the road rules. Please download the map below for parent parking information.
It is great to see that more families are walking their children to and from school or parking in the community centre car park and walking their children from there, helping to ease traffic congestion around the school.
