A Note from the Principal

Butler Primary School is a busy vibrant place.

The staff work tirelessly to ensure that our students have every opportunity to learn new things, participate in in-school events, and go out of the school to visit places and experience those once in a life time opportunities. They work collaboratively planning activities, checking that their assessment of student work is fair and consistent, developing an in-depth shared understanding of the WA Curriculum and they are constantly watching over our students to make sure they are growing and developing into happy well adjusted individuals.

As we are now half way through term 3 it’s an ideal opportunity for us to be reminded of the enormous importance that we must place on safety when vehicles and students are involved. Please be reminded of the care, so obviously required in the school car park during those busy before and after school times, and remember that the car park is not a ‘kiss and drop off zone’. Students are put at additional risk when they are expected to jump in and out of vehicles that are not parked in designated bays. Every one of us has the daunting responsibility of keeping safe the students of our school and this must be evidenced in our daily actions.

In the last month the students at Butler Primary School have participated in our Athletics Carnival, the State Cross Country Competition and the One Big Voice Festival which was held at the Perth Arena. They have also participated in and celebrated National Science Week. Throughout this week the students had the opportunity to be immersed in innovative activities that illustrated fascinating areas of knowledge awaiting exploration. They participated in hands-on activities that portrayed positive messages about the impact that science has on our lives, our economy, our society and our world.

A big thank you and congratulations to staff, students and parents for the collective contribution to ensuring such special events are a huge success. It is a privilege to be part of this fantastic school community.

Assembly by Room 6

EXCEPTIONAL EXPLORERS!

Students of Room 6 performed their assembly on Thursday, 4 August based on explorers and early exploration. We have been learning about what attributes explorers needed to have and what encouraged them to become explorers. We learnt that explorers had to be great risk takers and conquer their fears to achieve great success. Students were dressed as sailors and a few represented and explained the more famous explorers of our time, James Cook, Ferdinand Magellan, Marco Polo and Christopher Columbus. The students then showed off their rapping skills and rapped a song titled “Explorer’s Baby” which explained the Age of Exploration. This was a huge success! An exceptional performance by Room 6.

Paper Planes

Students from Room 12 performed their assembly on Thursday, 18 of August and engaged the audience with an exciting performance about Paper Plane flying and measurement. Students used the skills they have been developing in mathematics to demonstrate the use of measurement and data collection in the Olympics, using Paper Planes. The audience were introduced to a number of very talented Paper Plane flying teams who represented five different countries that competed in this year’s Olympics. The students of Room 12 used fantastic team work to plan and execute their assembly. They also showcased their exceptional acting, singing and public speaking skills. Room 12 then invited their Buddy Class to a Paper Plane workshop which was a huge success. Well done Room 12!

Athletics Carnival

Batavia takes the shield!

Our annual Athletics Carnival was held on Wednesday, 10 August on the Butler Primary School Oval.

Mr Malcolm, Mr Salkilld and Mr Piperis arrived bright and early to begin the set up for the carnival. They were soon joined by some helpful Year 6 students who enjoyed the opportunity to show their leadership skills and assist Mr Piperis and the staff on the morning.

It was a very successful day with all events running smoothly. The day began with the junior students running the 50m while the senior students cheered them on. The team captains did an excellent job on the day motivating their factions to join in the chants, and cheering their team mates during their individual races.

The tabloid rotations began shortly after the running races. The junior students carefully carried eggs on spoons with concentrated effort and keenly placed beanbags in hoops while the senior students competed in events such as the shuttle relay and 400m sprint. Everyone seemed to enjoy the activities on the day and, even noticed some of the teachers joining in!

The Pre Primary classes enjoyed the tabloid rotations in the middle of the oval during the morning and their teachers organised a variety of fun activities for them to participate in.

The anticipation and excitement of our last event was finally upon us - The Grand Champion Relay. Parents, students and staff were among the cheer squad and fierce competitors. Once again, the parents were victorious in taking out the Grand Champion Cup! Congratulations to all those who competed.

A huge thank you to the P&C for organising the very popular coffee van, the sausage sizzle and the cake stall. We would also like to thank those parents who contributed their time through baking, setting up, cooking sausages and selling on the day. Without this continued support, the children would miss out on these fun additions to the carnival.

Batavia was the overall winners of the day and the positive energy and supportive cheering, helped to create a memorable community event.

The overall points were:

Please return the consent form and $6.50 by Friday, 26 August.

All students are encouraged to enter the Readathon. During Book Week, students will record the number of minutes they read at home each night and add it to a class total. Reading totals need to be signed by a parent in order to be added to the running total. Recording sheets will be displayed in each classroom. All completed sheets will go in the draw for a prize to be presented at the Book Week Assembly on Friday, 2 September.

Guess the Book Competition

The library will be open before school each day and every recess for the ‘Guess the book’ competition. Each day there will be two clues at two levels of difficulty. Junior clues will be aimed at Year 1-3 students and Senior clues at Year 4-6. Students can use the clues to guess the book and fill out an entry form to be in the draw to win daily prizes. Winners will be drawn and announced each afternoon. Parents are welcome to visit the library each morning before school.

Year 3 News

The students in Year 3 have enjoyed an electrifying Science Week filled with engaging experiments and challenges.

On Tuesday, students took part in a whole day of science activities where they completed Science Rotations and learned about scientific concepts such as friction, chemical reactions, electromagnetism and centrifugal force! The students then took part in a year group challenge where they had to design test and modify a paper aeroplane to create a plane that could fly the longest distance while carrying weight. Students took their best design out for a 'Fly Off' to determine two year group winners. The winners were Haylen from D6 and Haiden from D9. Well done boys!

One of the most enjoyable parts of the day was having fantastic family members come in to help the students and teachers. Their help was greatly appreciated and we think that they had lots of fun too!

School Uniforms

Butler Primary School students are to be commended for the pride that they display when wearing their Butler Primary School uniform. At times, students do need reminders about the need to comply with the school dress code and we appreciate our parents supporting the school in this matter.

Students in Western Australian schools are required to be clean and appropriately dressed for school activities. School dress requirements are tangible evidence of the standards expected of students. A school’s dress requirements play an important role in promoting a positive image of the school and creating a sense of identity among students. The benefits of dress requirements include: promoting safety of students through easier identification; keeping costs of clothing within reasonable limits for parents; and assisting students to learn the importance of appropriate presentation. Being suitably groomed is part of the process by which students learn to engage with employers and the community.

School uniforms are readily available at Lowes Clothing Store at Ocean Keys Shopping Centre.

The table below outlines the school uniform for requirements.

Chaplain’s Corner

HELLO Everyone,

I hope this finds you well, and you are enjoying Term 3.

We have Book Week approaching to look forward to, and this week the Year 6’s have had a thrilling time away on Camp. I joined them on Tuesday and had a great time!

Our VALUES for the term are – FREEDOM, INTEGRITY, A FAIR GO.

INTEGRITY - Act in accordance with principles of moral and ethical conduct, ensure consistency between words and deeds

The Macquarie Dictionary meaning for integrity - soundness of moral principle and character; uprightness; honesty.

The recent Olympic Games is a prime example of all our Term 3 Values in action. Athletes having the freedom to compete, athletes displaying integrity when they compete, and athletes being given a fair go.

I wish everyone a fantastic fortnight. Stay safe and stay well.

Kind regards
Mrs Hunter
Chaplain
