Principal
Welcome back to Term 3. I hope the holidays were enjoyable for all.
It was very pleasing to see our students looking bright eyed and enthusiastic on the first day back. I encourage all our students to remember my ongoing messages about working hard, playing fairly and safely and looking after each other.
At the heart of our drive for continuous improvement is the development of a ‘high performance – high care culture’.
In building such a culture in our school we will be embedding the core principles of resiliency in our everyday practices. Taking this approach means every teacher-child interaction becomes an opportunity to promote resiliency. Butler Primary School teachers are aware of the potential their interactions and behaviour have to influence the mental health and resiliency of our students.
Skills such as optimistic thinking can be taught explicitly. Resiliency is absorbed by students who learn in an environment that is supportive, challenging and involving, in which the innate potential of each child is believed in and nurtured, and in which the wellbeing of staff as much as students is fostered through a health-promoting environment.
Resilience permeates every level of our school's functioning and we are endeavouring to have all members of the school community working together to provide our students with integrated and positive experiences.
Every member of staff has a contribution to make to this culture and we will be seeking feedback on how we are going early in Term 4. We will be utilising the National School Opinion Survey and will seek feedback from staff, students and parents. More information will be given towards the end of Term 3.

School Faction Carnival
Wednesday, 10 August is the school Faction Athletics Carnival and it is always a highlight of the school year! It is an exciting day where we see our students face different challenges from the normal classroom activities. Students are encouraged to participate and give their personal best, to cheer on their faction team and to demonstrate good sportsmanship. A note with all the information about the day was sent home at the end of Week One and is attached again for your reference. This includes a map of the oval and a timetable of the day's events.
Three Year Old Pre-Kindy Playgroup for Term Three
Butler Three Year Old Playgroup has commenced for this term. Playgroup sessions are held each Tuesday of the term, beginning in Week 2 and ending in Week 7. Parents stay with their child for the session, from 9:30am to 11:30am. Early childhood teachers run the fun-filled and educational program and it is an excellent way to prepare your child for Kindy.
Places are still available for this term so please contact the school on 9562 1804 if you would like to enrol. The fee is $60 which is to be paid prior to commencing along with completing or updating an enrolment form at the school office.

The NED Show – Never give up, Encourage others, Do your best.
The NED Show will be visiting our school this year on Wednesday, 3 August. It is an American show that uses audience participation, storytelling and yoyo tricks to promote positive behaviour. This is a no cost show through a ‘Pay it Forward’ Program. There will be NED-messaged yoyos available to purchase at recess time, for 5 days after the show.
GIFTED AND TALENTED: Primary Extension and Challenge (PEAC)
ASSESSMENT OF YEAR 4 STUDENTS FOR THE PEAC PROGRAM
The PEAC Program provides part time extension and enrichment for exceptionally able students in Years 5 and 6.
PEAC offers a range of courses that provide the most able students with work that is intellectually challenging.
All students in Year 4 will have the opportunity to be assessed for suitability for the PEAC Program.
Students who are performing well at school are possible candidates for the program.
There are some students in Year 4 whose potential is not so easily recognised. There may be students who are underachieving at school and there are some students who demonstrate certain skills and abilities more at home than at school.
Together, we can ensure that all students who have the potential for high academic performance are identified.
Testing at Butler Primary School will occur in Week 3 of Term 3.
The test will measure the student’s ability to recognise patterns and to predict with speed and accuracy and measure each child’s ability to apply their knowledge and learning.
The scores from the test will be used in the selection of students for PEAC courses and extension programs during 2017 to 2018.
If you do not wish your child to be included in the PEAC assessment please notify the school in writing by 29 July 2016.

Assembly by Room 4
In Week 10 of Term 2, the Year Ones from Miss Turner’s class presented ‘Facts on Animals’ assembly. Room 4 have been focusing on language and text features of non-fiction texts in Literacy. They have been researching facts on animals using a variety of research tools. They entertained their large audience with songs and dances about animals in the jungle and enthusiastically read interesting facts on animals. The class looked amazing in their animal masks and outfits. Room 4 then invited their parents back to class for morning tea. There, they celebrated a fabulous assembly effort. Well done Room 4!

Choir parents please find attached information on purchasing tickets to One Big Voice - 12 August 2016.
Room 14 – Helping to Improve the School!
In Room 14 we have been busy creating ‘Buddy Benches’ for Butler Primary School. Last term we wrote a persuasive letter to Mrs Woodhouse describing the benefits of having a Buddy Bench at our school. Mrs Woodhouse was convinced! Two benches were purchased from Bunnings and with the help of the staff from Bunnings, we put two benches together. We then painted the benches so that they would be noticeable. There is a buddy bench for lower primary and a buddy bench for upper primary. These are located outside Block 3 and Block 4.
Some reasons to use the buddy bench include:
- If you are new to school
- If you want to make new friends
- If your friends aren’t here today
- If you want to play something different than what your friends are playing
- If you’re having a problem with your friends and you just can’t solve it right now/you want to take a break
- If you want to be a buddy

Year 5 Mathematics in Motion
The Classic Dart, the Defier, Manta Ray, Ken Dwyer and the Raptor- these are all names of paper planes that the Year 5 classes are using to collect and graph data. In Mathematics this term, we have been learning about data collection and graphing and we have been using paper planes to assist us. So far the students have made, flown and collected data for the Classic Dart, the Defier and Manta Ray. They have demonstrated fantastic cooperative learning skills through working with a partner to make and measure their planes. They have graphed their results in the form of column graphs and double column graphs. The students have been thoroughly enjoying the hands-on learning experience of making the paper planes and flying them, and learning important concept in Statistics and Probability. Here are some pictures of the students flying and collecting data for their planes

BUTLER OUT OF HOURS SCHOOL CARE
Butler’s YMCA provides affordable care before and after school every Monday to Friday.

Parent Parking
Parents are reminded that parking is not permitted on grassed kerbside areas around the Pre-primary car park and along Tollesbury Avenue, as well as the bricked median strip in Cambourne Parkway or across any footpaths. Please consider the safety of all other road users and pedestrians when parking and leaving schools grounds.
All usual road and parking rules apply around the school and parking fines are issued by rangers (who visit frequently) to those not adhering to the road rules. Please download the map below for parent parking information.
It is great to see that more families are walking their children to and from school or parking in the community centre car park and walking their children from there, helping to ease traffic congestion around the school.

Bush Babies – Honouring our Elders
Art On The Move Touring Exhibition, City of Wanneroo

- Date: 21st July 2016 - 22nd August 2016
- Every day
- Location: Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre
- Cost: Free
Bush Babies – Honouring our Elders is a collection of paintings of sixteen elders who were painted as part of Community Arts Network’s Bush Babies community arts project. The Community Arts Network’s Bush Babies community arts project records and preserves the unique stories of the Elders who were born in the bush, reserves, missions or fringes of towns.
The paintings, and the short stories that accompany them, open a window on a sorry part of our history. The Elders featured in this exhibition all lived under harsh government policies that denied them basic human rights, including the privilege of being born at the local hospital.
Many of them were born in tents, makeshift shelters or under the stars, with senior women in their families serving as midwives. This exhibition gives an outlet to share this story to audiences and create awareness of these issues amongst communities.
The exhibition was inspired by a single photograph taken during one of Community Arts Network’s digital media workshops. The photographer, Jarrad Seng, who is well known for his work with musicians Ed Sheeran and Passenger, captured a stunning image of Ballardong Elder Hazel Winmar on her 99th birthday. The photograph inspired Wheatbelt artist Graham Smith to paint her portrait and this in turn inspired other artists to come forward to volunteer to honour an elder on canvas.
