It has been a busy term, but once again, an enjoyable one for all.
As I reflect on our first half of the school year I can’t help marveling at the obvious delight emanating from the faces of the students I see every day.
The atmosphere of joyful learning has become widespread and contagious. I see it in the young 3 year olds who started this term in awe of their beautiful environment where the possibilities to learn seem endless.
Our School Board and P&C continue to support our continuous improvement agenda and work tirelessly to enhance opportunities for our students.
Thank you to the many parents and caregivers who have made the time to introduce themselves. It is amazing how a quick hello can alleviate concerns and misunderstandings.
I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to the members of staff at Butler Primary School. The administrative, support and teaching staff all work together to create an environment that is safe and nurturing for the students in our care. It is by no means without its challenges and often thankless, but the love and dedication that goes into every day is remarkable. I wish them all a well-deserved rest during which to do things that feed the soul and bring restoration to the mind and body.
Have a wonderful school holiday and see you next term!
Mrs Julie Woodhouse

Pioneer Day – Friday, 10 June
Pioneer Day was held with great success on Friday the 10 June.
Stepping into Butler Primary School on this day was like stepping back in time! The students and teachers were dressed in their ‘Olden Day’ finest clothes with bonnets, aprons, overalls and hats galore! The students in Year One to Year 6 participated in an incursion called ‘Tales of Times Past’. Storytellers engaged the students in captivating stories of their own young adulthood and how these times compare to our current life. The students also participated in tabloid style activities which were all designed to educate students about life in the olden days.
Our classrooms were decorated with window exhibitions which highlighted our diversity as Australians. Students worked collaboratively to map out their own and their family members’ birthplaces. What a wonderful way to recognise that while we may come from different places around the world, we are all united as Western Australians and Butler Primary School community members.
While the weather was not in our favour, we did not let a bit of rain dampen our Buddy Lunch Picnic! Many parents, grandparents and siblings braved the rain and joined their children inside the classrooms and wet areas. Some families even laid down a picnic rug on the classroom floor to enjoy their lunchtime together.
Have a read of what some of our students had to say about Pioneer Day:
“I enjoyed sewing the koalas.” Sienna- Year 3
“I loved everyone’s costumes and I learnt how to make butter.” Tayla- Year 5
“I enjoyed the lady coming in to teach us about History.” Layla- Year 3
“Our storyteller told us that he was a parachute soldier in the war.” Sean- Year 5
“I enjoyed the parents coming into class to have lunch.” Thomas-Year 3
Students, staff and families are to be congratulated on their amazing effort towards Pioneer Day this year. Thank you for your efforts towards raising awareness of historical studies in a fun and engaging way.

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability
Butler Primary School is required to collect data about students with a disability and/or learning difficulties. We have been asked to provide data about the health and learning needs of children at Butler Primary School. The name of the school and the name of the students will not be reported. Information about the type of needs, programs and resources the school uses to overcome barriers and support children with special educational needs will be collected.
We believe it is important to contribute to this as it will help governments and the department develop better policies that acknowledge the level of funding and resources needed in schools to meet the needs of all students in Western Australia.
If you do not want your child/ren to be included, please sign the form provided by the school in Week 9 and return it to the school by the end of Week 10. If you would like to learn more about the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability, contact the Western Australian Department of Education NCCD Helpline on 0477 741 598.

Week 7 Assembly by Room 11
Room 11 recently presented an assembly on the Zones of Regulation. This is a program we use across the school to helps us identify our emotions and to teach us the tools we need to deal with regulating these emotions. The students explained that the ideal zone to be in for learning was the Green Zone and offered some suggestions on how we all could return to this zone when other emotions took over.

Week 8 Assembly by Room 3
The Year One students of Room 3 engaged the audience with an amazing assembly about skip counting in Week 8. Students explained the importance of skip counting in various areas of Mathematics and demonstrated a number of catchy songs and exercises that help them with their learning. The audience were treated to “The Dancing Twos”, “Exercise and Count by Fives” and “Counting Forwards and Counting Back”. The singing and dancing was so spectacular that some of the students in the audience started to join in!
Room 3 loved being on stage, talking into the microphone and inviting family members back to the classroom for a morning tea.
Excellent job, Room 3!

Week 9 Assembly - Room 13's Got Talent
On Thursday 23 June, Room 13 performed their own rendition of "Australia's Got Talent!" We had Jake play the show's host, "David Hughes". Cody was "Eddie Perfect". Hannah was "Kelly Osbourne". Lily was "Sophie Monk" and Nathan was "Ian Dicko Dickson”. We had five brave students from Room 13 share their talents with us. Grace and Taylah were our two amazing singers. Keelan was our hilarious comedian. Stephanie was our athletic and talented gymnast and Jett performed amazing tricks creating animals from balloons. They were all warmly received by the audience!

Visual Arts News
Senior Primary Art
The Year 4, 5 and 6 students have been very busy throughout Term 2 in the Visual Arts room. Throughout this term we have been focusing on linking our Visual Arts to concepts that we are discussing in other learning areas. The Year 4 students have focused on blending different colours using coloured pencils and dyes to create a stunning sunset background with a silhouetted sail ship representing vessels from the first fleet. The Year 5 students have been focusing on the beauty of Australia’s natural environment. They have used their knowledge of symmetry to extend upon parts of pictures of some of Australia’s famous landmarks such as Uluru, The Bungle Bungles and The Great Barrier Reef. With their use of a variety of different materials, the Year 5 students have created outstanding pieces of art. With particular focus on the art created by different cultures, the Year 6 students have created their own oriental fans by incorporating different patterns and pictures commonly used throughout Japanese art. There has been a great amount of enthusiasm, energy and excitement within the art room this term and all of the students should be extremely proud of their hard work!

Junior Primary Art
To kick start the year in the Junior Art room, students painted canvases with paint, water-colour pencils or water soluble crayons. Their canvases were about a moment or a place that was special to them. We had open days for friends and family to come in and admire the children’s work.
For Harmony Week in Term One all of the junior Art classes worked on a Harmony poster.
They did an amazing job!

In their classrooms, the Year Three students delved into the book, ‘Are We There Yet?’ The story involves the author Alison Lester travelling around Australia with her family. She sees different landscapes and icons along the way. In Art, the students decided which landscape or icon they liked best. The students with the same choice were teamed up on our new iPads to research that place, upload images of it and draw it. Below are some of their awesome pictures. Students were allowed to choose any medium they wanted to complete their art.

In the Year Two classrooms, students have been studying the book, ‘Lizzie Nonsense’. The book is set in rural Australia in the early pioneer days and tells the story of a young girl’s life there. In the Art room the students designed and made a hut like the one Lizzie would have lived in. Finally, the students painted a scene from the book.

The Year One students watched music video clips of what primary colours are and how they can make secondary colours. The students had a lot of fun with paint. They then read the Aboriginal Dreamtime book, ‘How the Birds Got Their Colours’ and created their own coloured birds. We read the book ‘Who sank the boat?’ and created a scene from that whilst learning about Mathematics and Science.

NAIDOC week is this week. We have looked at where the Torres Strait Islands are and created their flag. We created an Aboriginal flag on the map of Australia and created some Aboriginal dot painting.

Year 2 News
Living in Past
This term, the Year 2 children have been participating in English, History and Technology and Enterprise activities based on two beautiful Australian fiction books. The books are "Lizzie Nonsense" by Jan Ormerod and "The Road to Goonong" by David Cox. These books depict the life of Australia's pioneers living in harsh conditions in isolated areas.
The children were asked to design and build a model house similar to the bush style houses of the past. The children used sticks of various sizes to make their houses. Mrs Rowlinson assisted all classes with their models which were completed in the Craft Room.
Teachers from D1, D2, D3, D4 and D5.
News from Kindy
Buddy the Circus Dog made his annual visit to Kindy in Week 8. He performed his tricks for the children and reminded them that it is important to keep practising the skills that we want to get better at and not give up! He also demonstrated that it is “OK” to make a mistake. These are the values we have been learning in class from Connie Confidence and Pete Persistence.

From the Library
Please remember that all student Library books must be returned by the end of this term, with the exception of Year 4-Year 6 Lexile books.

The Library will reopen at the beginning of Week 1 in Term 3 and will be open each week before and after school from Monday to Thursday and Friday morning for Lexile borrowing. The Library will be open at lunchtime, after the second bell, from Monday to Thursday. During this time, students are invited to play chess or other board games.
Please remember that all students must have a library bag in order to borrow. Books are easily damaged and soiled if they are carried to and from school when not in a library bag.

Mrs Pengelly
Chaplain’s Corner
HELLO Families, Staff and Students,
As I am writing to you I can hardly believe we are in Week 10, our final week of Term 2.
And… the holidays are here! Time to take a breather, rest, reflect and recharge.
Congratulations to everyone on a fantastic term, all your hard work and your achievements! WELL DONE!!!
We have been focussing on three VALUES this term:
Doing Your Best, Responsibility & Understanding.
Understanding is to be thoughtful and sympathetic towards others. Having an understanding of how others might be feeling or what they might be going through.
Our VALUES are very important at Butler PS. We try to remind the children of these and nurture their learning of the VALUES. Our values are what help us to be a better person and to treat others as we would want them to treat us.
I wish everyone a safe and happy holiday, and I look forward to seeing you in Term 3

Kind regards
Mrs Hunter

Parent Parking
Parents are reminded that parking is not permitted on grassed kerbside areas around the Pre-primary car park and along Tollesbury Avenue, as well as the bricked median strip in Cambourne Parkway or across any footpaths. Please consider the safety of all other road users and pedestrians when parking and leaving schools grounds.
All usual road and parking rules apply around the school and parking fines are issued by rangers (who visit frequently) to those not adhering to the road rules. Please download the map below for parent parking information.
It is great to see that more families are walking their children to and from school or parking in the community centre car park and walking their children from there, helping to ease traffic congestion around the school.
