Principal
I would like to thank those parents who have contacted the office and shown interest in being part of the Safe to School Working Group that I wrote about in the 19th May newsletter. As a school community we have had on-going concerns with regards to traffic issues within the school car-park and street parking, and are keen to find solutions to traffic congestion.
Student health and family safety is of paramount importance to Butler Primary School staff. This week Western Power is presenting an electrical safety program to our Pre-primary to Year 6 students. The incursion is titled SHOCKPROOF. The safety program encourages safe practices from an early age, to ensure a lifetime of positive behaviours. The four key concepts of the SHOCKPROOF program are:
- understanding how electricity works
- the dangers of electricity
- how to stay safe around electricity both inside and outside the home
- raising awareness of Western Power's network.
This week was Butler's annual Australia's Biggest Morning Tea, where staff and students raised money to support the Cancer Council of WA and students were asked to bring in a gold coin donation. Thank you to our families for supporting this event.
I would also like to thank our parents for supporting the P&C Jump-Jam-A-Thon fundraiser. The sponsorship money raised will be valuable in purchasing additional literacy and numeracy resources. If you have yet to hand in the money, it is not too late. Thank you to those families who are also supporting the school P&C by purchasing an Entertainment book.
Week 7 is quickly approaching and on Friday, 10th June is Butler's Pioneer Day. A dress up day, a 'Tales of Times Past' incursion, a buddy lunch picnic and a history exhibition have been organised. Family members are invited to the buddy lunch and to the history exhibition.
Finally, I would like to wish all of our families a safe and happy long weekend, and remind parents that Friday, 3 June is a pupil free day and the following Monday, 6 June is a WA Day public holiday.
Mrs Julie Woodhouse

Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability
Butler Primary School is required to collect data about students with a disability and/ or learning difficulties. We have been asked to provide data about the health and learning needs of children at Butler Primary School. The name of the school and the name of the students will not be reported. Information about the type of needs, programs and resources the school uses to overcome barriers and support children with special educational needs will be collected.
We believe it is important to contribute to this as it will help governments and the department develop better policies that acknowledge the level of funding and resources needed in schools to meet the needs of all students in Western Australia.
If you do not want your child/ren to be included, please sign the form provided by the school in Week 9 and return it to the school by the end of Week 10. If you would like to learn more about the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability, contact the Western Australian Department of Education NCCD Helpline on 0477 741 598.
Room 10 Assembly
In Week 4 of Term 2, the Year 6 children from Room 10 presented an Olympic themed Senior assembly.
The Year 6 students wanted to highlight the upcoming Olympics that will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Students worked in groups of 3 or 4 to research their topics. These topics included, the History of the Games, interesting facts, mascots, training commitments, exhibition sports, Olympic highlights, characters of the games, Paralympics and Winter Olympics.
Mr Williams was very happy when all the research and practice came together. Students are to be congratulated for their efforts and the way in which they spoke.
The feedback after the assembly was that Room 10 may have just achieved their assembly personal best!

Physical Education News
It has been a busy start to Term 2 with the Cross Country Carnival being held in Week 1. The top 10 students from each race were invited to be a part of the Cross Country Club. A select few students from the Cross Country Club will represent Butler Primary in the Quinns Invitational on Friday the 29th of August at Gum Blossom Reserve. They will be competing against other schools from the northern suburbs of Perth. On the 5th of August the same group of students will be participating in the State Cross Country Carnival to be held at UWA Sports Park. GO BUTLER!!
The focus of this term's Physical Education lessons have been based on winter sports. Students from Years 1-6 will be participating in netball, soccer, AFL and hockey. Some lucky classes have also been given the opportunity to participate in clinics run by sporting specialists from Golf WA and Little Athletics.
This week students from Years 5 and 6 will be participating in the 20m Shuttle Run (Beep Test). The students will also complete the Shuttle Run in Term 4 to measure their fitness progress over the year.
Sporting Schools is a new, free of charge, after school sports program offered to Year 6 students. The students have been coached by sporting experts from Golf WA and Volleyball WA. In Term 3, Cycling WA will be involved in the program and will teach students the basics of bike maintenance, road safety and cycling techniques.

Kindy PP5 News
Dinosaurs
The kindy children in PP5 have been learning about dinosaurs. In literacy they have clapped the syllables of many dinosaur names, explored dinosaur stories, and even created a dinosaur movie while exploring the difference between fiction and non fiction stories. In mathematics they counted, sorted, and graphed the different dinosaurs. The children enjoyed being Palaeontologists, carefully digging up dinosaur bones and fossils. They also used their fine motor skills to melt frozen dinosaur eggs to discover baby dinosaurs inside.

Ricochet Circus
To begin our theme of circus, the kindy children were delighted to watch a performance of circus skills by " Scooby" of Ricochet Circus. The children were then able to practise some circus skills of their own using spinning plates, poi, diablo, juggling scarves and balls, juggling sticks and dancing ribbons.

P&C Jump Jam-a-thon Fundraiser
Kindy to Year 6 students had great fun and expended amazing amounts of energy when they participated in the Jiggle Jam and Jump Jam P&C fundraiser held in Week 4.
Students demonstrated great stamina and skill in performing a number of dance routines, including the I Like to Move It, Kotahianga, Stop, Drop,N Roll and Witch Doctor dances. All students received a Jump Jam certificate of appreciation for participating in the fundraiser.
Thank you to all families who have sent in their donations and sponsorship money already. If you have not yet sent in your donation, it will now be gratefully accepted by the school.
Please click on the links below to access the Jump-Jam-a-thon letter and sponsor form if you require a new form.

SHOCKPROOF Incursion
Students at Butler Primary School have been learning about safety and electricity at the SHOCKPROOF incursion this week. Electricity is part of our everyday lives - and it's easy to become complacent around it. But electricity is by its very nature hazardous, and Western Power is committed to educating the Butler Community on electrical safety. Western Power's SHOCKPROOF program is one of the only school incursions in WA that educates children about the science of electricity and staying safe with it.
The Shockproof incursion bring students' attention to how much they are around electricity and encourages critical thinking about how to behave safely around it. They participate in the learning experience by conducting investigations and problem solving safe responses to real life scenarios. The programs cover Pre-primary to Year six students.
Western Power's SHOCKPROOF program and resources are all linked to the Australian Curriculum, specifically the Science and Health and Physical Education learning areas. The concepts taught support and build on general capabilities such as literacy, numeracy, critical and creative thinking, and personal and social capability.

Threadworms
Please find following and attached some information on Threadworms.
Threadworms, also known as pinworms, are tiny parasitic worms that can infect your large intestine. Threadworms are most commonly seen in children. Other worms that infect people's intestinal tract, such as roundworms, hookworms and tapeworms, are uncommon in Australia.
Please see the attached fact sheet from the Department of Health for signs, symptoms and treatment.

Chaplain's Corner
HELLO Everyone,
This newsletter brings us to Week 6! That means we are halfway through Term 2, and we have our WA Day long weekend to look forward to. A very timely break, I think.
WA Day was previously known as Foundation Day. In recognition of our complex history and the diverse nature of our community Foundation Day was renamed to WA Day in 2012.
1 June 1829 is an important day in our history. This was when the first free settlers, men, women and children completed their long voyage to the Swan River Colony aboard the Parmelia with Captain Stirling.
Our VALUES for this term are:
Doing Your Best, Responsibility & Understanding.
Let's look at Responsibility… Being responsible means that others can depend on you. You are willing to be accountable for your actions. When things go wrong and you make a mistake, you make amends. "My life is an influence on every life mine touches. Whether I realise it or not, I am responsible and accountable for that influence." – Ron Baron

BUTLER OUT OF HOURS SCHOOL CARE
Butler's YMCA provides affordable care before and after school every Monday to Friday.

Parent Parking
Parents are reminded that parking is not permitted on grassed kerbside areas around the Pre-primary car park and along Tollesbury Avenue, as well as the bricked median strip in Cambourne Parkway or across any footpaths. Please consider the safety of all other road users and pedestrians when parking and leaving schools grounds.
All usual road and parking rules apply around the school and parking fines are issued by rangers (who visit frequently) to those not adhering to the road rules. Please download the map below for parent parking information.
It is great to see that more families are walking their children to and from school or parking in the community centre car park and walking their children from there, helping to ease traffic congestion around the school.
