Principal’s Message
Improving safety around Butler Primary School
As a school community we have had on-going concerns with regards to traffic issues within the school car-park and street parking. However, Butler Primary School is not alone with trying to find solutions to traffic congestion. The amount of school traffic during drop off and pick up times, combined with possible exposure to inattentive drivers, has increased significantly over the years and frequently puts children at risk.
I am interested in working with a group of parents who would like to be involved in a Safe to School Working Group to develop a strategy to address students’ safety during school drop off and pick up times.
If you are interested in being a part of this proactive action, please contact the office.
Mrs Julie Woodhouse
Principal

IMPORTANT DATES FOR TERM 2 Tuesday 24th May – Friday 27th May - School
Photos Remaining School Development days 2016: Friday, 3rd June (Term 2,
Week 6) Students do not attend school on these dates. |
Year 4 Maths, English and History Studies
Mathematics
During the past two weeks, students in all of the Year Four classes have been learning about perimeter and area in Mathematics. The students have enjoyed participating in hands on activities, working both independently and collaboratively with their peers. These activities involve predicting and measuring the area and perimeter of various objects and shapes, using informal materials such as 1cm cubes and elastic bands. In addition, students are now learning how to calculate area and perimeter using mathematical formulae.
English and History
This term, the Year Four classes are focusing on the theme ‘Explorers’ through an integrated Literacy and History curriculum. Throughout our lessons, the students have been working cooperatively using hands on activities to develop their historical skills and knowledge. Students have participated in activities involving cooperative learning strategies such Give One, Get One, Think Pair Share and Silent Card Shuffle. These strategies encourage students to work cohesively as a team and to develop their knowledge through a shared experience. Towards the end of the Term, the students’ learning will be consolidated as they will have the opportunity to select an explorer of significance to research and present information to their peers. Here are some of the Year Four students in action.

D1 Assembly
In Week Two of Term Two, the Year Twos from D1 presented an 'Olden Day' assembly, based on their English and History topic.
The Year Twos have been studying the book "Lizzie Nonsense" about a young girl growing up in the Australian bush in the olden days. The D1 students shared their ideas about how they would have amused themselves if they were living in the olden days, like Lizzie, the main character in the book. (This brought back memories to some of the teachers about their childhood pastimes!)
The children sang the song "A Home Among the Gum Trees", which is about someone who wishes they could live a simple life in the bush like people did in the past. The class looked wonderful dressed up in their olden day clothes. They did a fine job of presenting the assembly and enjoyed the experience.

Canteen Corner
Please find attached the new winter menu. The summer menu is no longer available this term.
Have you tried out our online ordering system? The canteen staff love to see orders appearing through the online system. It is very easy to use and its saves you from hunting for change in the morning! Orders need to be placed by 9am for lunch that day.
http://www.canteen4schools.com.au/
Ordering online also assists the canteen in streamlining their operations including stock management.
Also, a reminder to parents using online ordering to check that your child’s room number is correct for this year.
Kindy students are also able to order their lunch from the canteen.
Mrs Shelly Siakia
Canteen Manager
BPS Canteen is now ONLINE . Please order lunches through the online site:
https://www.canteen4schools.com.au/
Lunches can still be ordered from the canteen through the lunch bag/basket system. Recess and 2nd bell lunch treats and snacks are still available through the canteen hatch.
BUTLER OUT OF HOURS SCHOOL CARE
Butler’s YMCA provides affordable care before and after school every Monday to Friday.

Attendance - Everyday Counts
For students to succeed in academic achievement, attendance at school is of paramount importance. Our motto for attendance is ‘Everyday Counts’. Once a child is enrolled in school, it is a legal requirement for them to attend. It is also a legal requirement for schools to record any form of absence.
If your child is unable to attend school for any reason, please contact the school at your earliest possible convenience. If you are withdrawing your child from school for a holiday, you must put your intentions in writing addressed to the principal.
Parent Parking
Parents are reminded that parking is not permitted on grassed kerbside areas around the Pre-primary car park and along Tollesbury Avenue, as well as the bricked median strip in Cambourne Parkway or across any footpaths. Please consider the safety of all other road users and pedestrians when parking and leaving schools grounds.
All usual road and parking rules apply around the school and parking fines are issued by rangers (who visit frequently) to those not adhering to the road rules. Please download the map below for parent parking information.
It is great to see that more families are walking their children to and from school or parking in the community centre car park and walking their children from there, helping to ease traffic congestion around the school.

Multicultural Girls Leadership ad AFL Program
At the Edmund Rice Centre we run a Leadership and AFL program for young girls and women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) backgrounds on Friday afternoons at the Butler Community Centre. The program provides leadership training and uses AFL as a medium to provide life skills training and personal development. It also improves integration and enhances cross cultural understanding, as these girls are taking enthusiastically to Australia’s game. They are provided regular training and many weekend opportunities:
