Principal's Message
Term 1 is drawing to a close and much has already been achieved at Butler Primary School. Those of you who attended our recent parent meetings will certainly agree with this. Teachers have worked hard to establish work and homework routines, set expectations and ensure that the students feel safe and settled.
Voluntary Contributions
I would like to thank our parents who have paid their $30.00 voluntary contributions this term. If you have yet to pay, it is not too late. I would urge you to contribute as your child will directly benefit from the extra literacy and mathematics resources our school can purchase. You can pay directly at the office or by Direct Deposit.
Direct Deposit Details are:
BSB 016338
A/C 110391487
Please reference your child's name and description.
School Hat for Term 2
Students are required to wear the navy broad brimmed school hat from Term 2. Caps will no longer be accepted. This policy change has been endorsed by the school board.
Arrival Time for Students
Families are reminded that students' arrival time is 8:20am and the first siren goes at 8:35 am. Students are being actively discouraged from arriving at the school earlier than this time. All students arriving late must receive a late note from the office before going to class.
Personal Sports Equipment
Students are discouraged from bringing their personal sport equipment to school. Personal items can often get damaged or lost. Each class has a supply of safe, sport equipment for students to use at recess and lunch breaks.
ANZAC DAY
This week, we have been preparing for our annual ANZAC assembly where students and staff reflect on what ANZAC DAY means to them. Anzac Day goes beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day on which we remember all Australians who served and died in war and on operational service. The spirit of Anzac, with its qualities of courage, mateship, and sacrifice, continues to have meaning and relevance for our sense of national identity. April 25th is the official date for ANZAC Day and is a national holiday for all of us to reflect on those past events that have shaped our own identity.
Finally, I would like to thank all of our wonderful students, families and teaching staff for making Term 1 a blockbuster term! We all worked very hard and achieved a lot. I would like to wish you all a happy and safe holiday, and enjoy this time with your family and friends.
Mrs Julie Woodhouse
Principal

Parent Parking
Parents are reminded that parking is not permitted on grassed kerbside areas around the Pre-primary car park and along Tollesbury Avenue, as well as the bricked median strip in Cambourne Parkway or across any footpaths. It is great to see that more families are walking their children to and from school or parking in the community centre car park and walking their children from there, helping to ease traffic congestion around the school.

Kindy PP5 Green Group – Teddies and Chickens
This term the Kindy children of PP5 Green Group have been learning letter sounds and maths principles through exploring the theme of Teddies. During the term each child chose material to make their own teddy. They chose the size of the teddy that they wanted, drew around it onto material and helped Mrs Johnston to sew their bear on the sewing machine. Then they stuffed the bear to make it cuddly. Each child has also used the teddy to measure and make the right sized quilt for it. The children also weighed their teddies to see what was heavier and lighter than them. The class is now planning a picnic to take the teddies on in week 10.
During the week of Easter we had a surprise visit from six Easter chickens. We discussed other things that come from eggs. We even hatched a purple egg in a jar of water and surprisingly, out hatched a little bunny! You never know what might happen at Kindy!

Kindy PP5 Purple Group – Bear Hunt
Kindy is going on a bear hunt! This term the children have been very busy learning about Teddies and Bears. We have sewn our own Teddies and we were involved in many creative hands on experiences. We read the story "We're Going on a Bear Hunt" and went on our own sensory experience, walking through damp soil, dried leaves, freezing cold ice water, soft cotton wool, long wavy grass and found a Teddy Bear in a cave. What a fun sensory experience our feet had!!!

Kindy PP6 - Having Fun While We Learn!

.jpg?ts=1459922299)
Do you like our houses? In our kindy class, it is very important to all of us to have lots of opportunity to learn, whilst we are creating and having fun. These houses were created with simple shapes. We are able to describe the places we live in, whilst learning about the concepts and names of circle, triangle and square.
.jpg?ts=1459922295)
Do you like our face plates? We have a strong sense of who we are in our Kindy classroom and we are beginning to describe ourselves through art.
.jpg?ts=1459922296)
Do you like my name writing? It is very important to me to have lots of opportunity to recognise and write my name in school and at home.
These are the important things that I can practise:
- Sitting up comfortably on my seat at the table.
- Holding my pencil with the pincer grip and not a palmer grip.
- Remember a capital letter at the beginning of my name.
- Begin at the top of the letter, working down the letter.
- Counting how many letters are in my name.

Room 14 Assembly, Week 8.
Room 14 recently performed their assembly item based on Harmony Week.
Harmony Week is an opportunity for all Western Australians to celebrate our vibrant multicultural State.
The week runs from 15 to 21 March every year and encourages everyone to experience, explore and appreciate WA's wealth of cultural, religious, linguistic and ethnic diversity. Our assembly item introduced Butler Primary School to Bruce. Bruce is a dinky di Aussie who goes on an adventure; he meets many people from a range of different cultural backgrounds. Bruce learns to say "G'day" to all the people that he meets. In addition to introducing Bruce to the school, Room 14 invited the assembly to join them in singing a popular song for Harmony Week "Straya". In keeping with our Harmony week theme, we also gave many interesting facts about multi-culturalism and diversity in Australia.

Room 14 Assembly.
Room 16 Assembly, Week 6.
"5 stars!"
"Awesome!"
"The best assembly ever!"
"Ten out of ten!"
"Amazing!"
These are just some of the comments from the audience at Room 16's assembly. This term, students in Room 16 have been learning about taking care of their body and how to stay healthy.
We ran a healthy lunch box challenge, aiming to bring only healthy, unprocessed food to school for crunch & sip, recess and lunch. At the beginning of the challenge we had 95 unhealthy foods in classroom and only 32 healthy foods. On the best day of our challenge we had 152 healthy foods.
In our assembly, the stars of Room 16 presented what they have learned about healthy eating and being active, and the results of our challenge.
Everyone spoke beautifully, showed confidence and looked like they had a lot of fun dancing to 'Turn up the Bass'.
Well done, Room 16! You were absolutely awesome!

Harmony Week 2016
In Week 7, we celebrated yet another fantastic Harmony Week. The theme this year was 'Our Diversity is Our Strength'. Our students enjoyed many exciting and fun activities, including writing competitions, poster competitions, cooking a range of dishes from around the world and a fun buddy class/family picnic. On the final day we had a fantastic cultural dress up day and a wonderful whole school assembly. We sang our school community song; 'Voice of Harmony' and the choir sang a beautiful rendition of 'Imagine'. We finished off with two very energetic Jump Jam songs.

Library News
We are so excited to welcome Kindy classes to the Library next term. Kindy will visit the Library every week and as they do for every student, the following library rules will apply:
- Books can only be borrowed during the class library session
- Books are borrowed for 1 week and must be returned before another book can be borrowed
- A replacement fee is charged for lost or irreparably damaged books
- Children must have a library bag to be able to borrow. A simple plastic shopping bag is perfect; it's waterproof and free.
We wish you a safe holiday and please encourage your children to continue reading. If you are looking for a free excursion during the holiday break, why not visit your local public library? Clarkson Library opens at 9:00am, Monday to Saturday.

Three Year Old Pre-Kindy Playgroup Registration
Mrs Alison Johnston and Mrs Lisa Wilson will be running the Three Year Old playgroup beginning in Term 2.
The playgroup will commence in Week 2 of Term 2 and run on each Tuesday for 6 weeks of each term. Mrs Alison Johnston and Mrs Lisa Wilson, both experienced and well loved early childhood teachers, will run the program, taking turns on alternate weeks. Both teachers are giving up their own time to run the sessions, in an unpaid capacity.
Parents will stay with their child from 9.30-11.30 each Tuesday. A fee of $ 60.00 per term is payable at the school front office and must be paid before the commencement of the playgroup each term. Part of this fee goes towards being registered in Playgroup WA and covers insurance.
Parents are required to complete a registration form at the front office, and they will receive play group guidelines. To be eligible to attend the playgroup, children need to be turning three before June 30 this year. Siblings are not allowed to attend unless they are babies who are not yet crawling. It is advisable for potential parents to secure their child's position, with payment, as soon as possible as places are limited.

Get involved in the School Banking program
Butler Primary School P&C is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students.
The School Banking program provides children with an opportunity to deposit money into their Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account at school each week. The program is about how often your child makes deposits, not how much they deposit.
School Banking is also a great fundraiser for our school. Our school receives $5 when a student makes their first ever School Banking deposit and 5% on every deposit made through the school (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit).
Getting involved in School Banking is easy!
You can get involved in the School Banking program by opening a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account at your local branch. All you need to bring is your current identification as well as your child's birth certificate. If you are an existing Commonwealth Bank customer and have NetBank, you can open an account online.
If your child has an existing Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account they can start banking straight away. They just need to bring their deposit in every week on School Banking day using their Dollarmites deposit wallet.
School Banking day will be Thursday, beginning in Term 2. More information about School Banking will be sent home with students.

Multicultural Girls Leadership ad AFL Program
At the Edmund Rice Centre we run a Leadership and AFL program for young girls and women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) backgrounds on Friday afternoons at the Butler Community Centre. The program provides leadership training and uses AFL as a medium to provide life skills training and personal development. It also improves integration and enhances cross cultural understanding, as these girls are taking enthusiastically to Australia's game. They are provided regular training and many weekend opportunities:
