Principal’s Message
As professional educators, our responsibilities have always extended beyond maximising the academic outcomes of our students. There is a strong human side to teaching that values relationships, engagement, support and respect.
In striving to create a culture in which every student experiences a sense of belonging to the school community Butler Primary School has been identifying and implementing a variety of strategies to engage with parents and our broader community. Feedback from our parent teacher interviews was very positive with both parents and teachers saying the opportunity to meet face to face is the best way to engage with each other.

Room 1 – Historians!
This term during our History lessons we have been learning about the importance of family. The students from Room 1 have made ‘My Family Boxes’ that reflect their family. They have drawn pictures of their family members and the things they love to do with them. Students have thoroughly enjoyed sharing and talking about their families with the other students.

Room 2 – Maths Fun.
In Room 2 we have been skip counting by twos and fives. We have used counters, blocks, number lines, puzzles and pictures to help us learn. We have also made a ‘skip counting by five’ display to help us remember what we have learned. We made a print of our hands using paint, added the number and put our hands in the correct order.

Room 3 – Noun Hunt
The students in Room 3 have been learning about nouns and adjectives in their literacy lessons. To help us make a list of nouns, we went on a ‘noun hunt’ in the school to find examples of people, places or things. We recorded the nouns on our mini whiteboards. Some of the nouns we saw along the way included a bird, a tree, the library and we even spotted Mrs Smith from the office! Back in the classroom, we thought of some adjectives to describe the nouns we saw. We had a wonderful time!

Room 4 - Exploring Geography
In Geography we have been learning about the natural, managed and constructed features of places and how the features provide evidence of change. This week we have been focusing on the natural environment. Room 4 went on a nature walk where we explored and identified natural features around the school. The students then sketched the natural features of the oval. Fantastic work Room Four!

Butler Primary School ANZAC Service
The BPS ANZAC Service will be held on Thursday, the 7th of April (Week 10) in the under covered area, starting at 9:30am. We will have two special guest speakers at our service and parents are welcome to attend. It is anticipated that the service will run for approximately 40 minutes.
ANZAC Memories Form
If children have any family links to current or ex-service men or women, they are encouraged to complete an ‘ANZAC Memories’ form and return it to school by Monday the 4th of April. The aim of this activity is to highlight the connections and contributions that the students’ relatives have made. The completed forms will be displayed on boards for public viewing near the under-covered area on the day of our ANZAC service.
Forms will be handed out in class to students who require them, or you can click on the attached document.

Asthma Friendly Schools Program
With winter fast approaching, it is important if you have Asthma that you are taking your Asthma medication regularly and correctly. It is also important to know your symptoms and what triggers your Asthma.
If your child has Asthma please ensure they have an Asthma Management Plan which you can obtain from the school office.
What are the main symptoms of Asthma?
- Wheezing-a high pitched raspy sound on breathing.
- Coughing
- Shortness of breath
- Tightness of the chest
These symptoms vary from person to person, while some may only have a cough or wheeze. Symptoms can also vary considerably in intensity.
What triggers Asthma symptoms?
Once someone has asthma, symptoms are set off or made worse by "triggers". These can include:
- colds and flu
- cigarette smoke
- exercise
- inhaled allergens - e.g. pollens, moulds, animal dander and saliva and house dust mite
- changes in temperature and weather
- chemicals and strong smells
- some foods and food preservatives, flavourings and colourings
Having an Asthma Action Plan
An Asthma Action Plan helps you to recognise when asthma is getting worse and tells you what to do when this happens. The plan may need to be changed from time to time if you or your child's asthma changes. Please see your doctor for further information.
Parent/Guardian and Emergency Contact Details – Are Yours up to Date?
Do we have your correct contact details
including:

Are the emergency contacts for your children up to date?

If you are unsure and would like to check or if your details require updating please call the school on 9562 1804 or email butler.ps@education.wa.edu.au .
Cyber Smarts-Using social media wisely
The Department of Education would like to encourage you to read the attached information about using social media wisely.
National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy
Year 3 and Year 5 students will participate in National Literacy and Numeracy Testing in May (Week 3, Term 2) and the specific dates are in the NAPLAN INFORMATION FOR PARENTS link. All students throughout Australia are expected to participate in the testing. They will be assessed in language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation), writing, reading and numeracy. Your child’s NAPLAN report will be issued through your school at a later date.
Although we encourage all students to participate in the testing, parents have the right to withdraw their child. If you wish to withdraw your child from the tests, you will need to sign a parent/carer withdrawal consent form before 2.4.2016. Please contact Deputy Principal, Deb Hamblin on 95621804 for further information. Parents can also access the NAPLAN website:
http://www.nap.edu.au
Three Year Old Pre-Kindy Playgroup Registration
Mrs Alison Johnston and Mrs Lisa Wilson will be running the Three Year Old playgroup beginning in Term 2.
The playgroup will commence in Week 2 of Term 2 and run on each Tuesday for 6 weeks of each term. Mrs Alison Johnston and Mrs Lisa Wilson, both experienced and well loved early childhood teachers, will run the program, taking turns on alternate weeks. Both teachers are giving up their own time to run the sessions, in an unpaid capacity.
Parents will stay with their child from 9.30-11.30 each Tuesday. A fee of $ 60.00 per term is payable at the school front office and must be paid before the commencement of the playgroup each term. Part of this fee goes towards being registered in Playgroup WA and covers insurance.
Parents are required to complete a registration form at the front office, and they will receive play group guidelines. To be eligible to attend the playgroup, children need to be turning three before June 30 this year. Siblings are not allowed to attend unless they are babies who are not yet crawling. It is advisable for potential parents to secure their child’s position, with payment, as soon as possible as places are limited.

Attendance - Everyday Counts
For students to succeed in academic achievement, attendance at school is of paramount importance. Our motto for attendance is ‘Everyday Counts’. Once a child is enrolled in school, it is a legal requirement for them to attend. It is also a legal requirement for schools to record any form of absence.
If your child is unable to attend school for any reason, please contact the school at your earliest possible convenience. If you are withdrawing your child from school for a holiday, you must put your intentions in writing addressed to the principal.
Parent Parking
To ease congestion and with mornings warming up, it is great to see that more families are walking their children to and from school or parking in the community centre car park and walking their children from there.
Parents are reminded that parking is not permitted on grassed kerbside areas around the Pre-primary car park and along Tollesbury Avenue as well as the bricked median strip in Cambourne Parkway. At times, parking fines and warnings have been issued by rangers. Please download the map below for parent parking information.

BUTLER OUT OF HOURS SCHOOL CARE

Chaplain’s Corner
Hi Everyone,
I hope you are well and enjoying Term 1, which is almost at an end.
As I am writing to you, we are celebrating “Harmony Week”.
‘Harmony Day’ is celebrated on the 21st March. This is a valuable opportunity for us all to think about the meaning of ‘Harmony Day’ and the message it embraces. Inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. A day for all Australians to embrace cultural diversity and share the things we have in common. At school we have had a busy week enjoying different activities, competitions and a Free Dress Day.
This year’s Harmony Week theme is “Our Diversity Is Our Strength”.
Next week we will be celebrating EASTER. A time of reflection, a time to gather together with loved ones, and a time of hope.
Easter is a Christian celebration. Easter is a moveable feast, always celebrated on the Sunday immediately following the Paschal Full Moon. On Easter Sunday Christians celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ after his crucifixion. The death of Jesus Christ by crucifixion is commemorated on Good Friday.
The history of the Hot Cross Bun dates back to pre-Medieval times. Marked crosses on baked goods was a visible sign that the bread was blessed. Hot Cross Buns are traditionally eaten on Good Friday for breakfast.
May you all have a restful and peaceful Easter break.
Kind regards,
Mrs Hunter

Multicultural Girls Leadership ad AFL Program
At the Edmund Rice Centre we run a Leadership and AFL program for young girls and women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) backgrounds on Friday afternoons at the Butler Community Centre. The program provides leadership training and uses AFL as a medium to provide life skills training and personal development. It also improves integration and enhances cross cultural understanding, as these girls are taking enthusiastically to Australia’s game. They are provided regular training and many weekend opportunities:
As you would be aware, young women from CaLD backgrounds are often not as active as their male siblings, often due to cultural and family issues, and this can lead to mental and physical health issues and isolation. Please see flyer for more information.
